Japan charts, 10 years ago

GDGF said:
Nice charts. Japan charts were sort of a rarity for western gamers back then (aside from the random chart one might find in the import section of a Gameplayers or EGM)

I kinda miss the days before the net made everything passe'.

I missed the days when you had to buy magazines for your Video games news, cheat codes, rumors, reviews etc. Before the net.

Resident evil
first week - 137,000
total - 1,107,500

Resident evil 2
first week - 1,300,000
total - 2,019,000

Resident evil 3
first week - 1,113,000
total - 1,542,750

Resident evil 4
first week - 142,250
total - 216,250 <------ :(

hope PS2 version sell a lot better

Are they really correct? Numbers seems to be much higher than Media Create, Dengeki and Famitsu.

it's all correct , some numbers are even less than Famitsu or Media Create

the site only collect the data from first console that game released on, so for code veronica it's DC version

Resident evil code veronica
first week - 349,500
total - 467,250

:D

I think it determine the sells number from famous source like Famitsu or Media Create , one thing I can confirm is Resident evil (Biohazard) sells number which almost the same as above.

Look at the latest totals for DS games. They are at least 100k higher than they should be. Totals for Nintendogs are 200k over Famitsu numbers.

Not sure what the source is folks, just chucked the link out there. There's a whole lot of information there though so I imagine there's some source / reasoning behind the data. How do the earlier totals stack up?

Older stuff is spot on actually, in line with the CESA White Papers (which are actual sales figures from the publishers themselves, not estimates like Famitsu/Dengeki/MC).

just saw nintendog number , I have to admit that the number is too high for that game . 888,550 total in japan is absolutely radiculous. Nintendog (all version) only sold around 400k+

671k is the latest Famitsu number, actually.

If these are manufacturers numbers, that would almost make sense, except they don't provide them weekly. Why are so many weeks of data missing, though? That doesn't help matters.

Anyway, since I'm bored here's some 1st week sales of previous gen stuff (by publisher) from 1991-1996...

...I'll add more later. Man, SEGA was killing everyone with those Saturn sales. :)

Well, it was more the announcement of FF7 that established PS1 in early 1996. By the time the actual release came, PS1 was already cemented as the "New Famicom".

Had FF7 gone to Sega's camp instead, we'd likely be playing our Saturn 2's these days. :)

Word is Sega didn't want FF near Sega machines because of Phantasy Star. If true, man, probably the worst decision Sega has made.

Woah, that's some rough competition. Can you confidently make such a bold claim?

I sorta doubt that, more likely SEGA was simply out of the loop concerning Square's unrest with Nintendo. Then again, there were rumors that SaGa Frontier and Xenogears started out as Saturn games... you never know. It'd be hilarious though, given that Saturn never even saw a "real" PStar release.

SEGA was *this* close to getting DQ7 too. Man, that would really split Japan.

It was years since I read that. Might be bullshit, probably is, but that would suck if that was true.

I did hear the DQ7 rumors. Sega had a lot of chances to scoop up developers after the great Nintendo fallout (circa 1995-1996) but Sony did instead. Then again, I'm having trouble finding anything Sega did right during that time.

Anyway, since I'm bored here's some 1st week sales of previous gen stuff (by publisher) from 1991-1996...

Those numbers from 1991 to ~1994 are not real sales numbers. Take Yoshi (FC) for example. I´m sure it did more than 10k first week.

I think he meant the time when Square went to Sega to make FF for the Master System, and they turned them down. And well, you know the rest.

I think the Saturn was in the running for FF7, but I imagine that previous rejection played a small part in the decision to go with Sony. And keep in mind that the Saturn was ahead of the PSX in Japan when Square made that move.

And it's funny looking back at Sega's sales on the Saturn back then. Hell, even their DC sales weren't too bad, though they weren't as strong as the Saturn, they're a damn sight better then what they've had the last few years. Shoot, I'd say most publishers would be fine getting similiar numbers these days.

I'm sorry for the bullshit, but its too amazing write this slogan.

22 Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (SFC) Quest 6,577 (total not given)

Ha! I didn't realize it was actually called Let Us Cling Together.. I thought that was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the kind of tactics you needed to play it...

-Dragon Quest VI (SFC) 1,274,857

THAT WAS FOR ONE WEEK!??

Hmmmm.... I was always under the impression that Yoshi's Island was not called Super Mario World 2 in Japan, and that was something they added on for the US relelase.

I could be getting it confused with Super Mario World not being called Super Mario Bros 4 in the US :P
