Update:

To follow up on how it's doing post release:

05./01. [PS4] Final Fantasy XV # <RPG> (Square Enix) {2016.11.29} (¥8.800) - 79.792 / 770.263 (-88%)

It looks like sales will be very frontloaded, similar to other entries in the series.

---

This isn't especially shocking given the state of the Japanese console market, but we generally have these threads anyway.

The game is likely to have the lowest LTD in Japan since Final Fantasy 2.

Lowest debut for a numbered FF in Japan in forever. Less than half the sales of FFXIII's debut. Half the number of PS4s sold at FFXV's launch compared to PS3s at FFXIII's launch.

Does this say more about the game/franchise or the state of gaming in Japan?

I didn't really enjoy the game but this still seems somewhat concerning.

Well, no surprise considering how much consoles lost their importance in Japan.
I expect future FF to cater even more to Western audiences.

People will ignore for doomsday posting, but the console market is in a different place.

Everytime you boot up the game it says "a Final Fantasy for fans and newcomers", looks like this strategy didn't help.
Of course there is other factors like the sad state of console gaming in Japan.
FF XVI will likely have a smaller budget and devs time (not making another open world will help)

Hardly fault of the game or the FF brand, everybody know home console gaming in Japan is a little more than a corpse.

What number came close this year? P5? Tales of Berseria? Yakuza?

Thanks for the less sensational thread, Nirolak

And yeah, the age of FF domination in Japan is over

Not surprising, as the OP said, considering the Japanese console market. Even Persona 5 debuted with ~264,000, as I recall, and was top of the charts too.

So, poor sales historically, but solid sales contemporaneously, I think.

Yes, it is in a different place. The place where Persona 5 can double what Persona 4 sold, while FFXV halves what FFXIII sold. A place called... justice.

No game has managed to reach this number yet on PS4.

Knack 2 is a good contender though.

Not hard when you already have a low ceiling.

Motomu Toriyama killed FF. If XV was everything everyone ever wanted, the legacy of last generation's trilogy damaged it.

Think of your favourite FFs that you played when you were young.
Now think of a kid playing XIII, XIII-2 or LR as their first FF.

I try to remember recent new releases of other titles for PS4 in Japan, and, I think that ~700000 is not that bad nowadays (for Japan only).

How can we blame "the state of consoles in Japan" when games like persona 5 have had their biggest openings in history? Didn't Atlus just say P5 was their strongest debut, sales wise?

Looks more like FF falling off than consoles in Japan.
