For clarification when you mention dominate. Switch already outsold PS4 on those countries LTD? Do you have numbers for that? I am actually interested to know.

No chance of losing? I mean they pretty much have the traditional home console locked down. Not since game cube days has ninty had the balls to challenge them head on. They learned their lesson, that's Sony's patch now.
Sure Wii was a masive flop, I remember PS3 saving japanese market cause if they didn't, only god knows what would happen to japanese gaming market...

Did they challenge Sony head on with a console with cutting edge power? Not at all. They went a completely different approach because the game cube didn't stand a chance. The wii u flopped so hard they'll never make another non portable console again.

As if that mattered in real life, that only matters to console warriors... In the actual world we live in, sales and popularity are much more important, the rest is just personal perception due to enclosed criteria... Ask Sony why they removed Kutaragi from PS division, they for sure care a lot for "the most powerful console" in 7th gen lol

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Congrats to everybody at Nintendo!

SCARY situation, if you ask me..

When sales are that high, a sharp decline maybe around the corner. I couldn't survive the pressure if I were in their shoes, but it's a nice moment to rejoice if you like Nintendo..

...safe to assume we're close to the peak of the mountain now. I'd be shocked and frankly disturbed if the situation endured to this level for a long time..

Sony are doing better then ever. If they wanted to do better in Japan they'd launch a portable and pull their full weight behind it. Instead ps4 and PS5 is getting full support. WW sales exceptional and Japan sales are decent. They contribute nicely.

Yet they don't, they probably know that if they do, they'll end up with half assed effort that results in a loss again... The best thing they could do is create a less powerful portable version of PS5, but I don't see that happening with x86 let alone so soon

PS5 didn't launch till mid Nov 2020.

Switch had all of 2020 on the shelves. These are totally unfair comparisons.

Sakuna of rice and ruins(NSW+PS4) made by 2 people in their free times generated more profits than PS5's exclusive Demon's Souls Remake and Spiderman MM combined sales in Japan is truly one of the most shocking news of 2020.

Fishing Spirit already outsold base version of DQ11S on Switch. Lmao 🤣.

As mentioned before Momotaro is already outperforming Pokemon Sword / Shield and will continue to do so as a Party game that has better legs than a Pokemon game which is usually a bit more front loaded. Pokemon ended up with 554.390 for the quarter, so around 26K sales average for the next 11 weeks.
  • Momotaro Dentetsu (Konami) - 277.514
  • Pokemon Sword / Shield - 268.620
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is up YoY in a major way as well.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 117.880
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 66.295
Ring Fit Adventure and New Horizon will continue to be major hardware drivers in 2021, as both games attract very different audiences.

In terms of NEW games Q1 2020 was actually very weak outside of the launch of the biggest game ever in Japan New Horizon:
  1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 2.608.417
  2. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX - 218.394
  3. Hatsune Miku: Project Diva MegaMix (Sega) - 78.558
  4. Persona 5 Scramble (Atlus) - 65.653
  5. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 (Bandai Namco) - 61.571
This year Bowser's Fury will probably have no issue surpassing 600K during Q1,
Olive Town
from Marvelous will also set a franchise record - I anticipate this to be the next break out hit on the system for a third party with at least 500K sales during Q1
Bravely Default 2 will be another game I think will do better than it's predecessor - I think it can hit 400K this quarter, so overall Square should be happy.
While Monster Hunter Rise launch should be very close or above New Horizon's launch week result >2M
We also have a few other games that can do well - Disgaea 6, BOND, Balan Wonderworld especially compared to Hatsune Miku & Persona 5 Scramble last year, and I'm probably forgetting some such mid-range titles.

And thank god they don't launch a portable. All those pap and vita games would have been better if made just for the ps3/ps4 instead.

Nintendo do portables and Sony do traditional home consoles. I prefer when both stay in their lane and don't directly compete. Better for everyone.

We seen what happened when Nintendo made a console exclusive to the TV. Wii I and Switch even share a big portion of their libraries. Lifestyles in japan mean portability is the key factor. That's why mobile gaming is so popular not just the switch.

Japan has consistently handing out sales number per weekly basis and Japan is the second biggest market for dedicated video games.

One thing that might get overlooked is that while most games in the Top 30 experienced drops of 30-60% WoW, Fitness Boxing 2 only dropped 16%:

Fitness Boxing 2 - 15.520 / NEW <40-60%>
Fitness Boxing 2 - 6.547 / 22.067 <40-60%> (-58%)
- first shipment sells out exits the Top 30, second shipment is made Week 1 2021
Fitness Boxing 2 - 9.304 / 42.099 <60-80%>
Fitness Boxing 2 - 7.781 / 49.880 <60-80%> (-16%)

Fitness Boxing Japanese Retail Sales by Year:
2018 - 3.779
2019 - 62.414
2020 - 62.949*
*last update was late August 2020, so even at 1K per week we would be looking at over 150K physical sales lifetime

Imagineer also had a very decent launch in South Korea and Taiwan, so I won't be surprised if they get to the 1 million WW milestone fairly quickly. We could very well see the game surpass 200K in 2021 physically in Japan escaping niche status :D

Another game that has performed very well despite it's very high retail price is Derby Stallion, the game already matched the 3DS game of 2014. The 3DS was priced around ¥5.000 compared to the premiums price of the Switch game which is ¥7.800.
Considering it's premium price I'm surprised it has done as well as it has, if they lower the price this year I'm sure they will find additional growth, as there does seem to be interest in the game. The game was #13 on the eShop December Top 20 , which is a pretty good result considering it's price - pretty much all games in the Top 20 were at least 30% cheaper.

[3DS] Derby Stallion Gold (Kadokawa) - 70.402 / 122.222
[NSW] Derby Stallion (Game Addict) - 74.244 / 121.740

Maybe if Game Addict create a good sequel and price it a bit better, they might get into the Top 5 games of the franchise which was all the way back in the PlayStation 1/2 & Super Famicom days when the franchise had two titles with over 1 million sales. In a few weeks time the Switch game will be the 7th best selling game in the franchise physically(it's already there if we looked at physical + digital). Lifetime sales could definitely surpass 300K at a ¥5.000 price point.
  1. [PS1] Derby Stallion(ASCII) - 920.565 / 1.737.819

Overall this is another small studio that could benefit from the Switch if they capitalize the same way Imagineer has done.

For sure, Sakuna has been an unexpected hit for Marvelous very happy for the Edelweiss team.
The game continues to rank high on Amazon, so it will probably surpass 200K physical this year on the Switch alone - combine that with it's digital sales and PS4 sales and you've got one of their top games in Japan of all time. Glad Nintendo convinced them to ensure they launched it on both systems this holiday.

No Brakes Games (port by Codeglue) with Human Fall Flat switch is impressive too, fucking legs :messenger_face_screaming:

SQE must be sweating right now with the amount of PS5 userbase in Japan for their PS5 exclusive title "FF16".
Hopefully that Sony cheque was pretty big
Congrats to everybody at Nintendo!

SCARY situation, if you ask me..

When sales are that high, a sharp decline maybe around the corner. I couldn't survive the pressure if I were in their shoes, but it's a nice moment to rejoice if you like Nintendo..

...safe to assume we're close to the peak of the mountain now. I'd be shocked and frankly disturbed if the situation endured to this level for a long time..
For hardware I definitely think 2020 and 2021 will be the plateau, and then the console will decline.

For software however, I think 2021 will see further growth and potentially 2022 could as well.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Why its always Japan...

Why not US...Germany...India...Pakistan..Brazil...Russia..or Canada..or somehere else...you know...other countries deserves attention too...

Japan..Japan..Japan...

Its fun for once..but its getting boring..
How can you say it's boring, considering what's happening...It's unprecedented.

Were you saying it was boring, when other companies were firing up the charts in other countries?

Just be honest with me please. It's boring because it's Nintendo... isn't it?

Youre doing it wrong when you accuses me as nintendo hater

My question is why these people only report on Japan numbers while there 190 nations on earth that deserve similar atention

For clarification when you mention dominate. Switch already outsold PS4 on those countries LTD? Do you have numbers for that? I am actually interested to know.
As far as I'm aware, the only country apart from Japan where Switch is head of PS4 LTD is China. Maybe in some other Asian countries as well but this isn't confirmed (I'd say Switch has very likely done it in South Korea given the sales up until the end of 2019).

Looking at Europe, there's no way Switch has outsold PS4 LTD in any of the markets we have data for. It probably will in France in the next couple of years, but for the rest it doesn't look too likely (we'll have a better idea if/when we get 2020 numbers)

I'd love it if we got numbers for all those countries! Unfortunately the data we get from Japan is vastly superior to what we get from anywhere else, so that's why these threads are the most common.

I'd already answered that, consistently reported weekly sales with physical sales numbers of Software and Hardware.

You needed to wait for annual report from other countries in order to get an exact data for hardware sales.

Its weird that they split multiplatform games. Things like Disgaea should have their points combined in my opinion.
