Seeing the numbers each week of ps5 systems being shipped to Japan has gotten simply infuriating to me. Still waiting for the system I ordered in November (64 days now with no word from Amazon Japan on how much longer I have to wait) and I’m now 10 lotteries that I’ve entered and lost every one. Sony really screwed up this launch in Japan with its pathetic shipment numbers

Yeah everywhere else that got ps5 systems got more than Japan. And yeah I get it, it’s more popular in the west now so the supply is needed there, but the treatment of Japanese PlayStation fans has gotten ridiculous and already I’m seeing people here fed up with the supply issues.

im trying to be patient, I just wish they would do something to help the issue.

Not only that the interest of PS5 depends heavily on exclusive software but with this pathetic numbers of userbase it might force some developers to consider on another options.

Clock is ticking and Monster Hunter Rise is around the corner while a new Remake of Pokemon game is waiting behind it.

I honestly think Sony is probably conceding the winter and spring to Nintendo. No way it competes against monster Hunter even with the high demand for PS5. I expect that they will have a bigger push for the system come this Fall here. Still for people like me who are looking for one, or even in my case actually got an order in (only to find out amazon oversold and had to put a lot of people on the waiting list) we’re ready to buy now and we simply can’t. I’ve already seen some Sony fans here say that they are just going to buy pc games now believe if ot not if this lack of supply continues.

I just don't see any software on the horizon that could push PS5 momentum upward.

I think this is the year for Nintendo to send Playstation brand to the irrelevancy in Japan.

That's actually pretty bad in terms of prognosis for PS5 (let alone Series X|S) seeing how some systems like Dreamcast underperformed in Japan. You can see that the rate of growth for PS5 and Series is a lot more flat than Dreamcast or even Gamecube.

Really scary situation for Sony as the second biggest market is blooming but their presence is decreasing.

I'm just gonna come out and say it: I don't think they've made a console appealing to the Japanese audience. People keep saying it's due to lack of games appealing to the market but that in itself kind of fits the idea the system isn't appealing to the majority of gamers there. However, it's more troubling for the system's prospects in the region considering Japanese gamers bought the PS2 in droves and that had a lame launch lineup there, but was boosted by DVD playback functionality. Plus I think Japanese gamers knew the big quality games more to their tastes were on their way considering how much of that they got on the PS1 (and that may also explain why Dreamcast sales kept improving after the 1st week, since they had a good feeling Dreamcast would continue to offer a lot to their tastes the way the Saturn definitely did).

If they had similar faith in PS5 in that regard they would probably still be buying more consoles early on, but the truth is they are a lot more confident in Nintendo providing those games for them, hence Switch is doing even better there than it was before. When Switch 2 arrives it might just end up having the best launch of a gaming console/device in history, I can see it probably edging out PS5's record there likely with just Japan alone; factor in the rest of the world and they could easily break that milestone. The hype is absolutely real for them.

I hope things pick up for them (and Microsoft) in the region, but right now they're pulling less than 4% of Nintendo's hardware numbers in the region, that's dangerously close to being in margin of error territory. Considering Switch has a bit of a software drought at the moment, that's kind of damning.

Dude, looking at literal data that shows a forming trend isn't concern-trolling, it's taking things for what they are. The new consoles are underperforming in the Japanese market, PS5 somewhat surprisingly so. It most likely has to do with it not being an appealing system for that market as it is now.

Should be obvious even if they tank in Japan PlayStation as a GLOBAL brand will still be extremely strong, potentially stronger than ever depending on how some things play out. But Japan is absolutely not into Sony or Microsoft's offerings this go-around, it's Nintendoland. It is what it is.

right now there is little to none for sure. I expect that will change by the end of the year and more so into next year. It’s looking a whole lot like the PS3 and PS4 launches which Felt similar here but this time it’s worse. Japanese developers havent shown much yet and they will eventually. Everyone knows Nintendo will continue to dominate but I still expect long term for Sony to keep its numbers near the PS4 ones. But the longer they treat the fans they have managed to keep, with their Otaku/high performance gaming focus, keep them frustrated at not getting a system it won’t even matter what software they have.

Honestly, and especially since they are calling the shots now in the PlayStation world, if Sony in America truly cares about the Japanese market like they claim they do, they need to change their tactics here now. They can’t even waste another day. If they don’t make drastic changes soon it’s going to be a tough generation for Japanese and Japan based PlayStation fans

Of course the Switch sold more. It was out for the whole bloody year. Bloody well would hope that it sold more, else it would be a disaster.
The PS4 and XBO were in obvious decline ramping up to the next gen consoles, and the next gen consoles were only out for 2 months.

Ohhh the xbox actually closed the gap on ps5 this week. The next gen traditional home console battle is heating up!

And strong switch sales on the portable front. They are closing the gap on the mobile market this gen but probably still lagging behind. Honourable effort though.
