Japanese games may not have been as popular on PS1 in US as the myths had you believe (Sales of PS1 games NPD)

I'm pretty sure Frogger launched at $20 for anyone wondering how it is so high on the list.

Doesn't hurt that "The Frogger" episode of Seinfeld came out 6 months later and had 30.7m viewers in its first airing alone.

you're completely missing the fact that piracy was rampant back then

heck, I did try to learn japanese and Kanji just to play the countless JRPG...

Also some comparisons to previous consoles would be helpful.

FFVI US sales - 800k
FFVII US sales - 2.4 million

Yeah, really strange people associate the PSX with JRPGs.

Not really shocked. I hate Japanese games. Seems to be only hardcore anime fans and weebs plays them.

And Gaf, but I guess many of them are in the two precious categories.

Because it's not relevant to the sales figures. Which had a massive increase from cartridge based systems. You are overplaying piracy. Also you trying to learn Kanji puts in a a major niche.

I'm surprised some people are triggered by this.

To me the only thing this shows is that it would be expected that publishers thought that if games were "too Japanese" they wouldn't be a commercial success. That doesn't mean enthusiasts like ourselves wouldn't appreciate them but maybe it wasn't worth the risk. I know I wouldn't have paid $30 to play a clunky Macross game.

It is somewhat surprising to see Tony Hawk above Final Fantasy but mostly because I didn't know Tony Hawk games were so successful.

Back in the day it was possible to play the games with copies and everything was good as long as you had the patience to figure out the menus.

So Multicultural team of fool can't answer a simple question.

Having one Final Fantasy game sell more than another doesn't mean "flood of Jrpgs" lol.

Tony Hawk was a big deal but across the country but it does seem that the impact of its popularity were mostly felt in cities were the skateboard fad was concentrated so in in others areas it may have seemed popular but not too big of a deal.

That makes sense. I'm also in another country.

On the topic of JRPG NPD sales in the US, here's a compilation I posted here years ago, for every RPG with data as of 2006:

The numbers are a bit higher because this was compiled later and there are mutiple NPD files out there (they revised their data a couple times).

We were missing some months (after 2002) but most of these titles had nearly completed their sales run (indicated as "Missing some minor month") . The data is complete up to 2002. Some of these titles might have sold a few hundred or more copies from the figures here, that's why I made distinction between "Final" and "still selling".

Huh? You do know consoles once had regions, right? Was i supposed to think hundreds of thousands of Americans got imported Japanese region consoles to play Japanese games? Sorry, didn't~

And this changes anything?...

PS1 is still a juggernaut in gaming history. And the argument of the impact of Japanese games. FF7 lauched the brand to new heights.

MGS lauched Kojima to the spotlight.
Here on GAF in the GOG release thread just plained ignored the fact that Metal Gear 1 was also released in there (which kinda makes this Metal Gear fan heart hurt a little) but a good signal on where the series started packing serious heat.

Could you link the thread.

Also these numbers are terrible. All of them, except Final Fantasy and some outliers like Legend of Dragoon.

(also Zelda isn't an rpg.)

Zero relevance. You can apply that to several American games as well "X launched Y into the spotlight" great that's not the point.

Magic Box PSX isn't 100% reliable and it's missing games.

Not only that but your frogger semantics don't work. It was not a japense developed game, no Frogger will ever sell as much as that game.

Not to mention, if we use your nonsense logic about Owners of Ips than some of the UK games would be US games anyway (and one would be french).

Also ranking is important thing to consider as well in the OP, where the reliable numbers are, some of the most hyped games, hell even on your list (though they give too much to FFVIII slightly) all sold much less than people think they did, which was the point.

The Magic Box is certainly more reliable than the source posted in the OP. The Magic Box is based on more recent complete figures provided by the NPD, whereas the OP source is based on older incomplete numbers.

Frogger on the PS1 is just the same old Konami arcade game remastered with 3D graphics. All versions of Frogger have sold over 20 million units worldwide across all platforms, with the PS1 version representing just a fraction of this amount.

But Driver and Tomb Raider were originally developed in the UK. That's the point. Frogger was originally developed, published and owned by Japanese companies. Frogger is a Japanese game, period. And the studio that remastered it in 3D was British, so that would just make it a British-Japanese game at best.

If we go by rankings, the top two games are Japanese, three out of the top five are Japanese-origin games, half of the top ten are Japanese-origin games, and Japan is more represented in the top 25 than any other country. Japanese-origin games were outperforming domestic American games in their own US backyard. How is that not popular enough?

It's also worth noting that sales don't necessarily represent overall popularity. The sales don't represent the used game market (which didn't count in sales figures), or the import market (which also didn't count due to legal issues), or the rental market (which was a huge industry back then), or the demo market (for example, the MGS demo shifted 12 million copies worldwide).

Their popularity wasn’t based on sales, that shit is “today” bullshit measures. It was because word of mouth between early internet communities and school friends.

As someone here pointed out, bullseye style, no one at school was talking about Frogger.

You mean NPD? Yeah sure.

Also no matter how much you spin Frogger was not developed by a japanese company stop.

Meanwhile FFVIII sold less than Tony Hawk which most people wouldn't believe, which was the point. GT was the only game that matches the popularity in real life with its sales, though PSone had bundles while Crash 2 didn't and Crash 3 had limited. Crash 1 had a special limited bundle but I think that was UK only iirc. While the GT PSone bundles were all over the place.

But GT was still impressive regardless, you aren't going to see a racing game be a best selling console game these days

More people were talking about Tony hawk and Crash than FFVIII and Metal Gear so I disagree. And the "remake" of crash selling over 10 million units only helps cement that.

You guys are taking this as black or white. What i mean to say is that back then sales figures wasn’t a measure of why something was “popular”. There was a clear following of japanese games back then, just while tony hawk and crash were making waves.

Frogger was an arcade game originally developed by Konami, a Japanese company. The PS1 version is simply a remaster of the arcade game handled by Sony Cambridge, which would make that version British-Japanese. Claiming Frogger is not Japanese is like claiming Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls are not Japanese just because their remasters are handled by an American studio. Regardless of who handles the remasters, SotC and DS are still Japanese games, and the same goes for Pac-Man and Frogger regardless of who handles their remasters.

FFVIII was considered the "black sheep" of the FF series. What's so unbelievable about the "black sheep" FFVIII being outsold by Tony Hawk in its own home US market? The FF game that really mattered, FFVII, outsold every Tony Hawk game in its own US backyard. And on a worldwide scale (which is what really matters), FF 7-9 each outsold every Tony Hawk game. Even if we exclude the Japanese market, FF VII & VIII both sold more units outside Japan than any Tony Hawk game did across the world.

It doesn't make any difference to popularity whether or not they were bundled. If anything, that just makes it even more popular than the sales would indicate, since that would mean GT was a system-seller. If a game is bundled with a console, it's usually because that game is a system-seller that can help shift consoles. That's the whole point of console bundles. Hence why the NES was bundled with Super Mario Bros, the SNES with Mario World, the Genesis with Sonic, the Wii with Wii Sports, etc.

You guys are taking this as black or white. What i mean to say is that back then sales figures wasn’t a measure of why something was “popular”.

It actually was, those games didn't sell as much as people thought, which were in reality a loud minority, but those games still sold well, just not as well.

Frogger is the only exception on that list.

Still no clue who you believe thinks they sold 100x more than this or whatever to believe that anything you have said debunks something. They sold great, at least equally to the biggest USA productions as your own chart shows sooooo, lol. You're making shit up, just as earlier when you claimed to know exactly what games were "more talked about" in school yards as if you ever counted that or it's a measurable, er, measurement. This is ridiculous, you made up shit to debunk them. Or rather when people debunked your bs you made it up to say hey, I'm not against that, but against those non existent people who thought they did even better than this. Wtf?

Frogger was an arcade game originally developed by Konami, a Japanese company. The PS1 version is simply a remaster of the arcade game.

Not only is your spin stupid and you really need to stop, but saying it was a "simple" remaster of the arcade game when Frogger was a brand NEW 3D Adventure game with tons of original levels already tells me you have no damn clue what you're talking about.

Yeah, just a remaster of the original game. lol.

Let me tell you where you screwed up, you quickly looked up the game and saw the first row of screenshots on google showing a 3D version of the road crossing and thought that was the whole game.

Frogger sold because it was a new adventure with a bunch of levels in 3D including lava factories, and secret caves and all kinds of other stuff offering hours of fun for $20-$25. It wasn't very good but it came out in 1997 and was one of the earlier PSX highlights for a short-time.

Maybe if you actually knew the material we are having a discussion over your arguments wouldn't be crap?

Just because you're a pansy doesn't mean I "made something up" you just don't want to admit what you actually see. I also never said anything about any game selling "100x" more, you're just an idiot.

It's already been broken down, with the list in the OP even added up the western games sold significantly more even if you use the other fools split. There's nothing "made up" about factual numbers. You can remove Frogger out the list nothing changes.

The "word of mouth" excuse also falls apart once you remove frogger as well, people were talking more about Crash and Tony hawk in the US than FFVIII and MGS, unless you surrounded yourself by those people in a minority echochamber or where an anime fan, than FFVIII may have been talked about more but that's not the real world.

(I also like how you thumbsupped the above users post that was also indirectly mocking you, you are nothing but a desperate wagon jumper.)

Great argument, pansy, that totally makes all your made up shit legit. I like how you think that post doesn't apply to your whole thread, op and premise, lol. All your op does is show Japanese games did GREAT in the USA and you just make up random unnamed people thought they did even greater to debunk it. Sad, and dumb af.

My edits were before you replied and don't change the point of what I said, your posts also have edits and to my knowledge there's no way to stealth edit on gaf, keep making shit up. You still haven't shown who thought Japanese games did much better than the GREAT results in your outdated/incomplete stats, just "people/you".

So I was supposed to know when you'd post to not be attempting to stealth edit on a forum where you can't?

Still can't come up with a reply, still you keep posting bs. Why does one have to be not-calm to say you're full of shit when you fail to show how you aren't? You called me a pansy first, bozo, it's right there. Again, where was this misconception that they did better than the great in your OP widespread? Nowhere. Exactly.

This guys is just a retard, don't even bother, I guess something about how well Japanese games did on PS1 triggers him.
Maybe is mad people liked anime or something?

The number in his OP prove Japanese games are exactly as big as people thought they were.

I think your premise applied to the SNES. Can't remember anyone who owned any of the banner RPGs, and I only saw a few in rental stores (like FF 3 and Super Mario RPG). It was a niche genre on the SNES. Some people don't realize that games like Earthbound and Super Metroid weren't exactly popular in their heyday, finding their way into many bargain bins.

PS1 felt like a true ambassador to "Japanese gaming". Both Nintendo and SEGA were Japanese, but their main mascots were tuned to American audiences and/or were "international". PS1 wore its home influence on its sleeve, especially with big JRPGs like Final Fantasy 7. Sony brand was a "Japanese" brand known for TVs and stereos. The PS1 was seen as a premium piece of "Japanese" hardware.

Maybe certain "Japanese" games didn't seem as popular, but the overall effect put a lot of Japanese franchises on the map. SEGA and Nintendo both struggled to bring their "Japanese" games over to the West in the 8/16 bit eras so they did not push them as hard on Saturn and N64. Sony seemed far more open to it, which added to the reputation/impression of the PS1 as a place to play "Japanese games".

Revisionism is strong here, no one would believe in minority anime or internet circles Tony Hawk outsold FF7. Even on this forum back in the day before the NPD threads came out and that changed. Those threads are still here. Japanese games were considered to be much bigger than they were while Western games were considered "rising" with opinion being PC ports like Diablo were among the best selling, with the exception of Crash which everyone knew.

Apart from Frogger and Namco History Museum, what about this list is supposed to be surprising? All the other games were known to be popular on PS1.

10 games out of 25 are Japanese for PS1 and 13 are japanese for the N64. Wow a big diffrence. The nr. 1 and 2 spot on the PS1 list are japanese games.
