Just guessing, but ...

Etrian Odyssey is supposed to be an old-school type very difficult dungeon crawler. Hardcore game.
Rune Factory/Harvest Moon are like those capsule games where you have to collect a bunch of rare hard-to-find stuff to get special items mixed with Animal Crossing "live a life each day" gameplay. People play these games for years, so it follows that those who like it really like it.

I think it also helps, that Etrian Odyssey, Harvest Moon and Rune Factory are established series with a history of western releases. It's easier to get excited when you know you'll be able to play the next game in the series.

Congratulations to MasterSheen for winning by units, and to Exterminieren, by percentage!

Congratulations to michaelius for winning the special Pokemon Black 2 / White 2 prediction league. (The units are a tie, but he posted 21 min earlier than SpaceDrake!)

Also, if Famitsu is keeps on with the early releases, I'll be switching to it as the official sales.

over under stats are really interesting to me, with the exception of Gundam Seed, seems like GAF is a little hivemindish haha. or at least, prone to anchoring effects.

Interesting results, thanks for your time Road ;-)

I didn't know there were two separate predictions.

Both michaelius and SpaceDrake nailed the sales of Pokémon Black 2 / White 2, we certainly didn't expect a 40 per cent drop in sales over the first title.

A staggering 96% of us undershot Culdcept, Persona 4: Golden a 92%. Both titles have been two clearly over-performers.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D is 100,000 units below our average, the 81% predicted a higher figure. In this case it's a shame that its low first shipment cut its sales potential. Now the million mark looks like its ceiling while it shouldn't have had any trouble reaching that amount in 6 - 8 weeks max.

Lollipop Chainsaw did it great, Goichi Suda has reasons to be happy, it was about time!

I almost forgot to mention Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of the Land of Twilight. It has been greatly overestimated, 60,548 units sold is a disappointing figure after the brilliant results of the previous entry (82,585).

No problem!

It's funny how they went so well with Pokemon but ended up at bottom of everything else (they also had the same 500k for DQM3D).

I guess people only focused on that single retailer comment from like one day after the pre-orders opened that said they had started as strongly as for BW.

Sadly that's about the only one I did get right

I actually suspect it'll still have some holiday legs and whatnot, but yeah, it's a direct sequel and clearly a "filler" game ala HG/SS. It was never going to do as well as a "major gen" entry.

A staggering 96% of us undershot Culdcept, Persona 4: Golden a 92%. Both titles have been two clearly over-performers.

Yeah, well, I don't mind bein' wrong on those. Especially Persona 4. I'm over the goddamn moon with it pushing 180k and looking like it'll cross 200k with ease.

I'll readily admit to having been off about how popular Terry's Wonderland would be, though. I thought remake-itis would bite it harder, but then I thought that about P4G too. I may have to rethink my opinion on just how much of a factor that is (though it seems like it's hit other games hard in the past).

I almost forgot to mention Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of the Land of Twilight. It has been greatly overestimated, 60,548 units sold is a disappointing figure after the brilliant results of the previous entry (82,585).

It's still in-line or better than other recent entries, though. I'm pretty sure it'll manage six-figures by the end of the year and keep Gust healthy, just like the Arland titles did. I AM curious to see where Gust goes from here, though, especially given how well Ayesha reviewed (as good or better than Meruru, which sold that 82k).

I think it also helps, that Etrian Odyssey, Harvest Moon and Rune Factory are established series with a history of western releases. It's easier to get excited when you know you'll be able to play the next game in the series.

EO (apart from the first one) has a history of US releases rather than Western, but I know what you mean.

Yes, I did a decent job, no big under/overestimate.

When is Super Mario due to launch ? I can't wait to predict its result.

Maybe I'm just crazy here (wouldn't surprise me), but the 3DS seems to be doing unusually well with smallish titles at the moment; we've just come off the most successful Fire Emblem in an absolute *age*, Culdcept's had its best launch ever, and it sounds like EO4's having a great start as well.

What's behind this, or am I seeing patterns where there are none?

Companies nailing advertising? 3DS audience being unusually receptive to experimentation? Desperation to find *something* to buy? Random coincidence?

-an unusual third parties effort during the first year and a half
-good advertising
-active userbase

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I would say its a combination of non-existent piracy and more ways for publishers to promote the games via Nintendo Direct and eShop demos/trailers/dlc.

There are a lot of reasons why Fire Emblem is doing well. The others might be benefiting from the Monster Hunter audience that may have different purchasing habits than that of the previous DS.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

I'd say this + games aimed towards a kind of different audience compared to the main one on DS. Really, Nintendo Direct are such a great way for promoting even third party games...I'm wondering why no one thought about this format before.

IMHO it's effect of 3DS/Vita being early in the lifecycles - market isn't saturated with hundreds of titles that can be bought from second hand shops so the core gamers will not have big backlogs and are more willing to buy software now.

Culdcept had its best debut, but it was still only a bit better than what it did on DS. I think it's more a case of forgetting just how well software was selling back at the height of the DS, in which case it isn't that surprising that similar games should be doing well on the 3DS.

Nintendo Direct and game demos might be playing a small part as well.

Edit: In some cases small-scale franchises on DS still have better records. Unless Land of Origin has really good legs it's unlikely to match the lifetime sales of Island of Happiness, for instance. Speaking of which, Garaph needs the correct english title for that game.

What are the odds of:

PS3 getting to 10 million LTD?
PSP getting to 20 million LTD?
Wii getting to 14 million LTD?
360 getting to 2 million LTD?
NDS# getting to 33 million LTD?
PS2 getting to 22 million LTD?

Culdcept on DS was released when jRPG were really popular on the console, after many Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and Kingdom Hearts. So far, on 3DS the biggest jRPG is Dragon Quest Monsters, with less than one million units, and the Fire Emblem: Awakening, just a bit over 400k.

Furthermore, Island of Happiness was something like the third or fourth Harvest Moon on DS; Land of Origins is, instead, the first one. There are chances the next entry will outperform it.

I don't think so. Being in early in the lifecycle is both a positive thing and a negative thing, since there might not be a strong userbase for some genres. I don't remember any of early DS jRPG performing well.

Yeah, a really big third party title surely helped in building a certain type of fanbase.

Fire Emblem was never really advertise well since No.6 (This one is No.13). Nintendo direct and the large coverage in famitsu at the time was a huge help into making the series more popular again. Those videos released weekly on the Nintendo
site showing off the gameplay, cutscenes, etc.

What I find even more baffling now is the big flop that Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance was.

I know that this is pure speculation, but do you think it would have sold better had it been released now?

The only advantage would be that it had an extra 1 million or so 3DS out on the market at the time compared back in March. People just didn't seem keen on this title.

I don't understand why people expected it too sell much; I mean, the franchise fatigue with KH is SO obvious; they have released just too many spin-offs

Are you saying the same will happen with NA sales?, because I totally disagree, game will be big here, maybe even a 1m I bet.

How many 3DS gaves have sold 1 million so far in the US? 4?

How many of them have been non-Nintendo games? 0?

I'm not even sure it gets to half of that in the US. The franchise fatigue is obvious and it even applies in the states too.

I expect it to do bad overseas too (especially upfront, though legs will probably be okay), but it's going to at least outsell BBS and Re:Coded here. 500k+ lifetime US seems doable imo.

It might even manage to pass BBS worldwide depending on western sales.

Do we have a recent worldwide figure for KH:BBS?

As of September 30, 2010 it had sold (shipped) 1.27 million units (North America 0.31 and Europe 0.19).

I highly doubt it ever shipped any more than that. I don't there is any recent shipment data because I don't think Square reports data from the next year unless it is substantial.

I highly doubt it. Theres the possibility it sells more in NA than in Japan (not really a big accomplishment) but I wouldn't be surprised if franchise fatigue had also set in the US. Plus, the 3DS isn't exactly doing amazingly well in the US right now.

Overall shipments probably weren't much higher than that in NA, maybe 50k more or so. For all of 2010 it sold sround 300k per NPD.

I don't know about Europe, anyone have it's rankings handy?

Well, the last comparable KH sold 733k... Franchise fatigue, but also less contents? No big steps forward in the plot? I hope they'll repair a bit with a Final Mix version.

I think WW YTD of it will be 1m; but 1m in the US alone? That's gonna be a hell of no way!

well, there are two different notions:

release a mainline FF, even a KH, on a system and everyone will buy the system just cause of so; but with the small installed based of 3DS, I suspect many people didn't get the game just because of so

Parakeetman

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
Being a Culdcept fan am pretty glad to see that the game sold ok for such a niche title. Must have helped too that this time out of all of the games the artwork of the characters is actually nice.

Will be looking forward to the next sales chart to see how Anarchy Reigns and Etrian Odyssey 4 does. Have been on the fence about Anarchy Reigns, since with fighting games unless you got buddies to constantly play with I tend to lose interest very, very fast. The price point is a bit high too.

EO4 though am enjoying it quite a bit, but the classes right now am not digging as much as 3. I miss my princess class. D:

if EO4 manages to end up with a higher LTD figure than KH3D, that will be mindboggling

I am not saying it will happen but it would one of the most surprising things if it did.

Let's not get carried away ;-)

US Sales:

GBA CoM ~ 1.1M
DS 358/2 ~ 900k
PSP BbS ~ 400k
DS ReC ~ 300k
Not bad, I think KH3D actually might do a bit better considering this (like 600-800k lifetime). NSMB2 & 3DSXL will probably provide a good jumping on point for many DS owners and KH3D is well timed just ahead of that. Also the 3rd party 3DS games that have done well are mostly in franchises that also did well on DS/GBA (Sonic, Lego, Spyro, etc) which might be a good sign for KH.

Dem increases compared to the rest of the world.

Last year was still coming out from the earthquake. It's why we knew (especially with the 3DS's performance) that there'd be YOY increases in a few months compared to immediately post-earthquake Japan.

Etrian Odyssey IV seems to be doing decent enough for first day sales, now all comes down to finding out what the first shipment numbers.

over under stats are really interesting to me, with the exception of Gundam Seed, seems like GAF is a little hivemindish haha. or at least, prone to anchoring effects.

People are looking at other people's estimations before making their own ones. That's why the numbers tend to be pretty same-y.

Actually, I think it would be an interesting experiment to see how much the numbers would differ if people would send their estimations to Road via PMs.

Are you saying the same will happen with NA sales?, because I totally disagree, game will be big here, maybe even a 1m I bet.

With the current situation of both the American market and the situation of the 3DS in the US I wouldn't be surprised if KH3D would actually sell less than BbS...

Who would have thought that no one needs a third version of the same game?

Everyone?

Oh.
