Jason Reitman To Direct “Ghostbusters 3”

I didn't hate the reboot, I liked the director's other work (Bridesmaids was brilliant - it was weirdly just the right movie to watch when my wife got her MS diagnosis - we laughed our asses off and it really helped us to cope with what was a really shitty day - maybe our emotional state at that time was part of it but it was one of those perfect moments for us in a weirdly personal way) and the cast was fairly capable, but overall it would have been better to make a new franchise (which to be fair, the director mostly did up til that point) than shoehorn his schtick into Ghostbusters where it didn't entirely fit.

I'm skeptical about a new film, partly because I suspect some of what was in the original Ghostbusters just couldn't be done today, and I agree with #Phonepunk# #Phonepunk# about how they were special because of a time and place and cast chemistry - it won't be possible to match that without an incredible amount of luck, and this applies to all the nostalgia reboots (so yeah I basically agree with phonepunk on most of that). Also agree the director's son has no reason to be as good as his father, it seems a tired way to gain credibility with nerds like us. Hopefully we won't fall for it.

Ghostbusters 2 had some funny scenes, but overall it felt like The Last Jedi of the series.

That teaser just managed to accomplish more in less than one minute, than the reboot did in 2 hours. The tone, the score, the audio effects just brought a flood of nostalgia whilst getting me excited for the new entry. I think this is in safe hands. After the disaster of the reboot, I hope Ivan Reitman and co told Sony to rightly fuck off and let them do the movie they want.

It's funny, I looked him up on IMDB to see what he's done, and he has a quote

Do you know how many times I get asked if I want to do Ghostbusters 3? Looking at my career so far, I mean if you just looked at my two films, I would make the most boring Ghostbusters movie. It would just be people talking about ghosts, there wouldn't be any ghost-busting in it.

The best thing about the original Ghostbusters was, that every character except Louis basically was the straight guy. The jokes were jokes that came naturally with the characters and the situation, all those people except Louis were BELIEVABLE characters. Ghostbusters 2 killed that in some regards (see Janine how they changed her character was a complete catastrophe), and the reboot just does not have believable characters at all. Just dumb paper cutout parodies, that would work in a five to ten minutes sketch, but not in a 90+ minute movie.

Ghostbusters was funny because they put believable characters in outrageous scenes and they reacted somehow naturally to this. It’s an exceptional, one of a kind movie.

I still haven't watched the reboot. It just doesn't look interesting. Is it really as bad as people say?

Fairly woke cast for 1997 - latino Bill Murray, goth chick, black dude, disabled guy

That series had a great intro:

This could be more Sony garbage or another Jumangi that turned out alright and made tons of money.

I still think the window for GB3 closed like a decade ago. The videogame was fun. Now we'll get old actors that don't really want to be there and Ramis died years ago. They'll do a torch passing plot to keep the franchise going and probably even avoid calling things ghosts so this won't get banned in China.

I didn't watch it until last Halloween, but thought the hate was overblown. It's didn't rape my eyes or childhood, but it was just a forgettable film. They aren't making a sequel, so I could just watch it for what it was. Some of the effects style did look neat even if it was a bit out of place.

That's an interesting observation, and I can see your point well when I frame it in that context. It makes me think of how a lot of the SNL movies sucked because they weren't able to transcend the "10 minute sketch" paradigm, or build upon its strengths. The ones that did, though, were fantastic, like Wayne's World, Blues Brothers, and Macgruber (although a lot of people didn't "get" Macgruber, I thought it was fucking genius).

I honestly don't care if they have a younger group take over at the end with them taking the backseat in any sequal they have planned but least make this film about the original ghostbusters
It gotta be like the old films
And I want them to be old and forgotten and then see them roll into town in the etco 1 with police escort and some new yorker shout "ya shit! That's the Ghostbusters! Clue " saving the day"

I liked the cast too. It's a shame they were given such a bad movie to work with.

Hah that pitch meeting vid is great. At least something good came out of the reboot.

As for GB3, I feel like Jason wants to do it because he does not want that shitty reboot to be the last thing to come out of this legendary franchise his dad created. Good on him, hopefully he does not fuck it up. I liked some of his previous films.

I do feel some people are overly harsh on the reboot, hyperbole for hyperbole's sake perhaps. It's a mediocre film, not a terrible one, tied to a franchise it should never have been tied to (ugh I hate using the word franchise for something like ghostbusters). The people involved have all made good movies away from that, they have tended to make their own IPs, and perhaps in this case it might have been wise to, if they wished to hunt ghosts, do that, but their own take on it, without taking the ghostbusters name, because that only invites comparison, and with the lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry, perfect timing, etc of the original it was never going to end well.

It was never gonna end well. From the first trailer where they even got the basics of the original wrong, "Four scientist saved the world" to showing Leslie Jones screaming as the stereotype black comedic relief. The doubling down and saying only misogynists didn't like it, to attacking the fandom, to the director screaming and running off set, going over budget. It was just a mess all round. Ironically the extreme Ghostbusters cartoon was far more progressive than the reboot.

Yeah the "if you don't like it you're a misogynist", as then seen in TLJ, does rather colour it with shit-crayons.

If it even mildly removes the stain in my mind that the reboot made, its fine by me. Should have done it years ago tho. Hopefully they get close to the quality screenplay Ramis did.

These teenage character rumors sound like they fit more with the forthcoming animated movie after 2020. Makes perfect sense.

Louis Tully could replace Egon so to speak with Venkman constantly trolling him. Slimer being Louis' pal finds out and............. :messenger_fearful:

I do worry about how much of the liberal media will relish to tear this movie apart regardless. Some are already proclaiming going back to the guys is a step back.....FML.

One thing about GB2 does really bother me though. Winston is there at the court room before the trial starts but when it kicks off he is no where to be seen! Obviously I know they want to recreate the first bust from the first film but still......we never got to see Winston trap a ghost!

For me, ghostbusters was my childhood. The films and the cartoon were everything. I had the toys, the games... I loved it, man.

The film that released recently was... Jesus Christ on a tricycle... I don’t even know... it was awful...

This could be amazing. And it certainly has all the right parts to make it so. The teaser was about as spot on as you could get.

As for plot, I don’t know why they are cooking. I kinda hope it’s about Ray, retired, living on a farm some place. The world knows ghosts are real, there’s other teams out there doing the job, but Gozer returns and nobody is up to the task and they keep getting shot down. He could could be living with slimmer in seclusion some place, still tinkering away on the parts, Egon maybe a constant voice in his head of what path to take. Then when he sees Gozer has returned, he knows he has to get the team back together, along with some young blood family members, to carry on the legacy.

You don’t need to over complicate things, you essentially just want to hit the notes of the original, which wasnt ALL comedy, and pass the torch in a respectful way.

Either way I’m there day one at this point.

Yes, the ship sailed on a Ghostbusters 3 starring the original cast a decade ago, I'd say it should have happened no later than 2011.

But there's still so much potential to the whole world and idea of Ghostbusters, there's just so much you could do with it, so much potential.

The reboot took the wrong approach, this isn't, it's the same continuity, the original characters will be back in some capacity, we're off to a great start.

For me, ghostbusters was my childhood. The films and the cartoon were everything. I had the toys, the games... I loved it, man.

I was born in 1989, so I wasn't able to see them in theaters, but I saw the Universal Studios stunt show when I was only 3 (probably a big reason why I'm so obsessed) and the first time I can distinctly remember seeing the movie was circa 1996, it just totally blew me away.

I also went through this weird period in 1997 where my obsession was revived thanks to renting the Genesis video game.

And while I can't remember when this was exactly I also remember renting tapes of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon.

What's cool is for years I was already a huge Ghostbusters fan and yet had no idea there was even a sequel until I happened upon it on TV once circa 1999, it was the scene with them diving into the underground river of slime and I was like "wait a minute, is that the Ghostbusters?"

I stopped watching since it was well into the movie but made a note to check the local Blockbuster for it and sure enough I rented it and saw the whole thing, that was a special moment to just discover a sequel to one of my favorite movies out of the blue one day (a similar thing happened with Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, was already an Indy fan for years without knowing there was a third movie until I stumbled upon it at Blockbuster once circa 1997, what's funny is not long ago I bought what might be that exact same VHS copy from my local Goodwill)

The cast will tell the entire story. However composed the cast is (50% men/women) the first step is hire good actors, no shitty SNL hacks nor jocks from Marvel movies. The last damn thing this movie needs is jocks and marvel quips.

Got to stay relevant somehow when more talented actors tuk ur jerb!

Ironically, I felt like Jones was the least awful of the four in the reboot.

I usually really like Wiig but she was just so uninteresting in that role. Jones was at least somewhat passable. Her comments are misguided though. It’s clear the fan base doesn’t want more of Feig’s Ghostbusters

I thought she was pretty cringe, but I could tell she was trying the hardest. I mean unlike the others it was supposed to be her big break out role, but alas.

Oh wow so the original guys really are going to all actually play their characters. I guess we still don't know how much of the movie they'll be in and if they're passing the torch to a new crew.

Yeah Jones was one of the only ones who looked like they gave a shit on the screen. I don't care much for her, but she was one of the only people who seemed to be genuinely acting. Maybe Wiig was the most aware of what a disaster the whole production was.

As much as I like these films, it's not the 80's any longer. Movies are shot way differently now. You know? Movies that are old tend to have a special place in our hearts, as they are charming, memorable and artistically rewarding to watch, even for newcomers. But many sequels made in the 2000s, 2010s or 2020 when it arrives, just don't do the originals any justice. Modern day versions rarely ever do do well among the most loyal of fans.

Given Murray has had a negative attitude towards doing a Ghostbuster sequel for a long time (funny though how he had easily the longest cameo in the reboot), and the fact that Egon will not be in the movie (and no I don't want him recast, they can say he passed on in a respectable way), I'd say a new crew kinda has to happen. I could see Ray and Winston being the primary mentors of the new team with Venkman having occasional appearances being the snarky guy we know and love but give him a big entrance in the final fight when the chips are down.

Spot on. There are a number of things very different now in filmmaking and society which make this a real headache. Had they made some films in between you could bridge the gap and see a natural evolution of the franchise but they didn't, and I'm ok with that, less is sometimes more.

Considering filmmaking for a moment, there is a definite look to 80s films in terms of lighting, colour balance, how it's shot, how the characters are introduced and interrelate, etc. They're more likely to focus on a single camera shot for more than 3 seconds, sometimes even on a relatively static camera. This is not so with modern movies where overuse of CGI has given everything a hyperunrealistic look, cameras moving around and switching every 5 seconds because they're no longer bound to the physical realities, the difficulties of doing that in the real world, and because nobody has an attention span. I blame the matrix.

A zillion nobodies want to say their piece about this for some reason...

Don't click, seriously not worth it

Dear Jason,

Congrats on the new gig! I’ll admit I didn’t see it coming – not least because I hoped, however naively, we were putting the Ghostbusters franchise out to pasture, at least for a little while. More fool me; I should really know better by now. My surprise was compounded, though, by your own past reticence to become your father. But I get it – people change. Needs must. (By the way, how was the hiring process?)

People will moan that Hollywood has run out of ideas, but that’s simply not true. I fondly remember the fierce innovation that came with Paul Feig’s 2016 Ghostbusters. They were ghostbusters, but they were also women. A lot of men were very upset about the suggestion that women (in particular, a black woman) could bust ghosts, shrouding it in negativity. The film felt doomed from the start.

Maybe it never stood a chance of competing with a titan of ’80s cinema. Besides, sometimes innovation can end up feeling more like tokenism. I’m not surprised you’ve distanced yourself from Paul’s corner of the GBEU. So what’s your spin? Teenage Ghostbusters? Perhaps not coming from you, if Juno and Men, Women & Children were anything to go by.

You’ve spoken a lot about how much you love the original films – how you were the first Ghostbusters fan, watching stage-side while your dad directed Bill, Dan, Harold and Ernie. I’m reminded of Kyle Newman, avid Star Wars fan turned director, who now spends his time telling everyone that Disney paid off critics to give The Last Jedi good reviews. It concerns me when die-hard fans become filmmakers – but that isn’t the case with you, is it? You’re not just a fan of Ghostbusters. You’re family.

The thing is, Jason, I’m just… tired. Tired of franchises being jolted back into life after a few years on the shelf. Tired of gimmicks. Tired of Hollywood nepotism. Tired of reboots, retcons and revamps. Genuine innovation in blockbusters seems increasingly the preserve of animation studios – just look at Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. I see there’s an animated Ghostbusters film in the works too, due sometime after your film. I hope you’ll understand why that seems like the more exciting proposition right now – doesn’t it seem like a natural fit for the wacky, ghoul-filled world of Venkman, Spengler and Stantz?

I question the need for another live-action Ghostbusters film as much as I questioned the gender politics in your recent film, The Front Runner. But maybe there is some commonality there: the urge to right a perceived wrong, the overwhelming sense of nostalgia for a “better time” in American culture. When politicians were noble, when movies were movies.

Good luck, Jason. The world’s watching. If everything goes to plan, who knows what might come next. Maybe Sofia Coppola will finally bring us The Godfather Part IV.

Yours with trepidation,

HW
