Jason Schreier Claims Brand New Major Game Projects Started Today Will Likely Be Targeting PlayStation 6

This news came via a tweet from insider Jason Schreier, commenting that brand-new projects from big-budget studios would likely aim for the next generation of PlayStation. And this makes more sense with this context in mind. Console lifecycles typically range from 5 to 7 years long, so keeping Rockstar as the example, if it launches Grand Theft Auto 6 within the next couple of years, that would be in the middle of the current console lifecycle, and based on the company's track record for the past decade, the next planned game would come out during the next generation of consoles.

What a false and ridiculous headline.

1. The fact that Jason is an insider is completely irrelevant to the claim

2. He's not saying that "it will likely target the PS6", he's saying it would likely be for the PS6 because AAA games take around 5 years to develop and console cycles last 7. We're 2 years into the 9th gen, do the math. That'd be like saying GOWR targeted the PS5 which is obviously false and utterly moronic. The development cycle is simply so long that it also came to the PS5

3. Devs haven't got the faintest idea of what the PS6 will be like so they sure as hell ain't targeting it

4. You don't need to be an insider to figure out any of this

What is going on with threads today where the title is worded almost completely differently than the content? Is 'clickbait fridays' a thing here?

lol. Has been been sleeping this entire gen? We are getting cross gen games in 2023. 3 years after the launch of next gen? No one is targeting PS6 specs for a release in 2030. They are finally starting development on PS5 games.

He's typically not this clueless. He's definitely right about console dev cycles taking forever. Starfield took 8 years. GTA6 wouldve taken 8 years if it comes out by 2025. Bungie is taking 7 years to make their new IP. GOW and Horizon are pretty safe sequels and still took 5 years. Cory has been working on a new IP since 2018 and it hasnt even been revealed almost 5 years later. It;s likely going to take 8 years as well.

Sony and MS will just refuse to release next gen consoles in 2027 and delay next gen to 2030. After which the 2030-2035 will be the cross gen period.

Great new strategy, put your bullshit “rumour” so far out that when it comes near and falls through nobody will remember. On the random chance your right you can do a “gotcha” that nobody gives a fuck about.

Don't feed the trolls.

This whole current-gen/next-gen phase thing kinda needs to stop in relation to games since games are software and software can be made for multiple hardware configurations. The only reason this is even a thing in gaming is due to how traditionally we've had to essentially drop and move on to the next. That part has already changed — given things like iPhone exist. So most likely, both Sony and MS, maybe not Nintendo are building platforms where they can move the "generation" forward technology wise without making people pick where to play their software. Sony is slowly moving towards doing that, given they have been pretty successful with their current business model. They are obviously not ignoring potential changes in the market (PC support, PS+ sub options etc).

We all know Sony tried carrying their games forward before with backwards compatibility with the PS2 and PS3 — we didn't have our accounts to create libraries then but almost the same thing; they lost sight of it with the PS4 but were quickly reminded of its importantance when Microsoft announced their backwards compatibility program. Now they are supporting it with the PS5 and my bet is that it will continue for as long as it can going forward unless they adopt a completely new technology again.

I hope not. The next console cycle can kiss my ass. Not going to mess with that Rat Race until I know I can just casually walk into a store and find one. Even if it takes 3 or 4 years into it.

Amusingly he's entirely incorrect as the last handful of generations of consoles, and surely the coming generations, are more aligned with traditional computers. They aren't targeting the PlayStation 6, they're developing a game for current gen and PC that has toggles and sliders that'll be pushed further for a PlayStation 6 console.

I think it's more likely that big AAA games started today would be cross-gen between ps5/ps6. A game released in 5 years time is gonna want to be accessible to the largest console userbase which will be PS5/Xbox Series players.

I don't buy that at all. Big AAA games that are started after he said that will actually complete and release on this gen of consoles. They'll just also release upgraded versions of those games on the next-gen consoles.

Fun fact: Sports games and COD come out every year. Annual iterations will likely come out for the Playstation 6.

But looking at Scherier's tweet, notice how he puts the word "likely" in it. So whether the big budgets games developed now hit PS6 or not, his factoid of the day covers both bases.

Nobody wants this news.
Also. It’s sucks that this is the case. Developing for so many years. Releasing ps5 game on ps6…
Remember when naughty dog released whole uc trilogy and tlou on 1 console. Or mass effect or gears and so on. Devs had a chance to learn console and each entry looked better.

Now tools are so much better and games still take 3 times longer to do than on very difficult ps3

It would be targeting PS5 and cross gen for PS6

And we'll likely get more 30fps games for PS5 moving forward if they decide to max out the CPU use. In such a case, no graphics toggle can increase the game to 60fps. This gen still needs a pro version for the choice.

God of war Ragnarok was greenlighted in 2018 and targeted the PS4, a consoles that released 5 years before it lmao.
New vs existing game.
New IP/games have no asset, no source code and would need a ground build up. Its not an easy, task, and it takes time to finish them up. Especially with the risk of getting rebooted, which might delay the game.

Jason is right on this one. AAA games takes alot of time to make them.

Every gen needs a pro 🤣 every gen developers max out consoles , running them at 30 frames .. that is the way !

And after a pro a new generation.. pro .. generation.. pro .. generation

It’s as old as Atari 😆

Translated: same game as for PS5 but at 4k 60fps or 2k 120hz instead of 4k 30fps or 2k 60fps.

I can assure everyone in this thread THAT a game started today will definitely ship on PlayStation 5, heck a game starting in 2027 will also Hit PS5.

Thank you! It's like common sense dissolved with the agent overly sensitive social justice warriors. How could anyone read that, and end up with an interpretation that echos the OP? Reading is fundamental.

And with the long development cycles for triple-A title today, few argument that MS could just invest in its own new IP as a quick solution for its lack of triple-A offerings is certainly a solution, but it's definitely not a quick one.

If he's talking about projects that were greenlit only yesterday then perhaps he's right, because it seems many AAA games now spend over 2 years in pre-production before any substantial amount of man-months start being put in the project.

It would be cross gen according to Jason the historian context framing. So they would in fact target PS5.

Ah good old Jason with his firm and committed statements.

1. A big budget game studio (like who?)
2. Would likely be (so might or might not)
3. The PlayStation 6 (so no multi plats or Microsoft studio's)

Given that cross gen is here to stay I think it's more likely that huge projects being greelighted today have a chance to become the cross gen games of the next generation.
