Seems like a given.
But there aren't an abundance of PC games with the overall quality of the high profile console exclusives.
This has nothing to do with the fact that those games are built for a range of hardware. AAA games are expensive and not many publishers have and are willing to put up the money to make a AAA game.

I just assumed you were understanding that I wasn't talking in absolutes and facts.

And there are always exceptions to anything, but in general that "theory" stands.
you said it as actual fact and still your theory is wrong in the abstract or the real world.

Why?
How do you think Sony got all the exclusive games/content we got to enjoy since they started Playstation?
And I'm not talking about just 1st party output.
Just find it weird that people are advocating for the success of a large corporation at the detriment of normal consumers.

A more modern example would be battlefield 4.

Had larger player count, higher frame rate, and gameplay situations that could not be done on last gen. Yet a last gen version still existed, and it was probably the most advanced “next gen” game at launch.

Seems devs were able to support old hardware and innovate at the same time just fine at the transition of current gen.
Was Battlefield 5 a big improvement over 4 or a small one?

I can see some people here are slightly out of touch with the general gaming community and perhaps this is why Microsoft read the market so wrong.

No one cares about backwards/forwards compatibility. All people care about is the lovely potential of a brand new console with exclusive games that show it off. They are also bothered about what console their friends buy so that they can play online with them, making it extremely important for a solid start in the generation. That's it.

It's such a basic concept that Microsoft are, for the second time in a row, failing to grasp. OR, they understand the concept but are bottlenecked with their studios and are revealing this information pre-emptively.

One thing is for sure; not even you on here is reading this news as a positive. That's because it isn't, it is clearly a negative and Microsoft are not performing well in the industry anymore. PS5 has "won" before this generation has even started.

It does. Because obviously their budget prevents them from reaching the same quality, so they have to make sure they get the best possible outcome for all platforms/configurations within the restraints of their budget and deadlines.

If I would've meant it as fact, I would've doubled down on it being a fact.

If you actually believe that no one cares about backward or forward compatibility you're smoking some shit.

It means I can keep all of this, all of my digital licenses, all of my physical games, my Xbox 360 games, Xbox games, my PSVR....

and not have to keep these, they can be outright replaced and are rendered redundant.

what?

You trying to spin AAA budgets into some argument about the quality of “exclusive” games makes no sense.

The First party publishers themselves have far more “less than AAA” games than they do AAA.

That’s just how it goes, there’s more small/medium budget games than large ones for obvious reasons, none of them being “exclusive” status.

If I would've meant it as fact, I would've doubled down on it being a fact.
Again, your “theory” is wrong too

Strawman.
That’s not a strawman.

You keep saying you want “early adoption” at the detriment of people who adopted the last hardware.

So you're saying that the budget of a game has nothing to do with the quality of the game?

Ofcourse there's more. The vast majority of them are also of lesser quality.

Unless you're talking about good and bad games, but that's not the same.

Again, your “theory” is wrong too
Ok.

Screw those people.
You don't want to make the jump? Don't cry about missing out on games if they're exclusive.
Can't afford it? Shit happens.

Nobody is talking about how they expect PS5 launch games to be so drastically different that they couldn't be done on PS4 with some work.....

Or you should just keep in mind that 3rd party will release crossgen games for some time, which are the majority of games being released in general.

So it isn't the end of the world to boost early adoption with 1st party exclusives.
It's actually the smart thing to do.

The “concern” is thicc in this joint. Its an Xbox thread, so I’m not surprised.

All because some games will be cross gen with Xbox One for 1 year or maybe 2 at most.

Lets remember, the GBA was going to be the “third pillar” after the DS released. That didn’t happen.

Let’s also remember, since we have so many game historians here, Sony has never launched a system with great, memorable games on Day One. Never. Not once in their history in the console business. Microsoft has. Nintendo has. Sony? Never. Kinda sad. Certainly not one that takes “full advantage of NEXT GEN hardware” on launch day. Their heavy hitters are always a year or two from launch.

Unless some mystery Sony studio has been making some banging next gen exclusive game for the last 4 years, I wouldn’t expect that to change this go around either.

Again, you made all this up.

We see countless examples of games being scalable across a wide variety of hardware.

Obviously there’s a pint where the concessions needed to make a game work on old hardware hurt the experience to a point where there’s no point in making the old gen version. That point will not be reached within the first couple years of the new consoles existence.
I made nothing up. There is a huge leap in cpu power next gen (as well as fast SSDs), developers are going to use that. Particularly first party titles from sony. There obviously will be cross gen games from 3rd parties, but there is going to be a drastic difference between games made for next gen only and cross gen because the Jaguar cores and 5400rpm hard drives in current gen consoles are such a massive lowest common denominator. It's not like this gen where CPU power barely got a bump from the previous gen and hard drives remained the same. Cross gen will die off far more quickly due to no developer or publisher wanting them games looking like crap in comparison to next gen only titles. It's easy to scale back GPU specific effects, but not when a game is designed around massively faster CPUs and SSDs.

I feel like the bigger issue is getting lost. If it's true that the new xbox is a 12TF monster of a console, then don't we want to see what that can do? It being able to run current-gen games with higher settings is already a given. And that's a nice feature!

But what we want when we spend $500+ on launch day for a new generation of console hardware is to get a glimpse at what is possible with it. Waiting at least a full year after the purchase to see what it's actually capable of is insane and there's a reason that this is a break from the norm.
This doesn’t make sense at all!

Sony will support its systems like they always have and phase them out years later if you upgrade or not! PS5 will play BC titles at least back to PS4 which means I can still get my PS4 groove on that system and on my pro if I decide to game in another room!

But still I get to play games with my upgraded system in mind for that game. Whatever comes after that is a bonus.

My dilemma is that the X1X just came out and is still pricey and you want me to upgrade two years later to play the same games I upgraded to play before again?

Yeah... no that’s way too much money unless everyone starts trading in their X1X’s before they get gamestomped!

DF are huge xbox fanboys, this is a surprise for me to see dark saying this. I guess even they aren’t dumb to say that old gen won’t hold next gen back.
Richard is the Xbox fanboy, John has always been the fair one who loves games in general. Love his stuff on retro gaming btw.

Its quite amazing how many times i see:

'So much concern. Its a Xbox thread afterall'

'Xbox thread. Much concern'

Or variations of the above. I've come across a few today. I like to discuss with fellow users. These folk can quite frankly FO if it bothers them that much. Nice to know which users I can add to my ignore list.

Wait. I'm confused.

Previous leaks said Sony want gonna have any exclusives at launch. Now a "games journalist" is saying something different....?

I'm starting to think that somebody doesnt know what they are talking about. 🤔

Im sure you thought that was very clever.

We all know the context of the last 24 hours. Hes responding to Xbox after Booty dropped the news that Series X will have cross gen for the first year or two. Schreier, a blue blooded Sony fanboy, is pumping you guys up so you can advance your console war narratives while the iron is hot. “Don’t worry guys! Sony has your back with TRUE NEXT GEN EXCLUSIVES!”

And Digital Foundry is... Xbox fanboys? That’s a new one LOL! I must e taken crazy pills or you guys truly are living in an alternate reality.

Who the hell said this? Are you going to name them or just make shit up? Why would anyone think Sony will not have any exclusive when last 2 gens they’ve had it.

Not sure why people applaud Sony for doing this.

They are purposely stopping support of the old device just to force people to upgrade.
In fact, it's a shitty move from their part to their customers. I mean, they already have sold over 100 million PS4 consoles: that's a HUGE userbase they want to keep faithful to their ecosystem, and not supporting them only adds insult to the injury.

Let's take TLoU 2 for example: many PS4 users bought the console expecting that title to be a Playstation exclusive... and suddenly the game is a PS5 exclusive. It would be a huge "f*ck you" to all of those users.

In fact, that's why Nintendo released BoTW on Wii U and Switch at launch, as that game was the swan song for the previous console.

Are you sure? Because right now we only have their word that TLoU2 and Ghost of Sushima will be released for PS4. In fact, I'm betting on they'll be on PS4 AND PS5 at launch: you don't want to anger your customer base (specially when it's a 100 million one) by changing drastically from one generation to another.

Well of course it will be on PlayStation 5 as well, but the question is will these people admit that having to spend $120 is some lame shit whereas for people buying Halo Infinite they would only have to spend $60 to have it on both platforms.

1st: my first post was an example (I clearly stated it), so it's not a fact and shouldn't be taken as one.
2nd: let's say I bought a PS4 this year (I haven't, but bear with me) expecting TLoU2. I would truly be pissed if Sony announces that it would be a PS5 exclusive. I'd be "WTF? I just dumped 300 bucks for nothing?"

The customer (we) should come first and above all, and shouldn't allow companies to make those kind of shitty moves.

You don’t know their plans. The reason why there was a tlou remaster was because ps4 was not backwards compatible. How they will handle this version we don’t know if its simply a patch or a whole remaster that would require months of work to rebuy.

Man, you don't have a clue what you're talking about. What is leading you to believe that because a game is also on Xbox One that the build on Series X won't be a defining benchmark of the next-generation?

Where do you people come from?
Dont act like You can lecture me, my friend.

What Im stating is the obvious that IS shown during evey generation transition, and no matter much bs You can put in wall of texts, the objective reality that can be witness with our own eyes speak more volume.

It is clear that with this whole "existem" thing, MS wants to build a similar scenario that IS seen on PC market with different rigs.

Heres the reality: compare Infamous 2, wich was release almost at the of PS3 life cycle, with Infamous Second Son. The leap between these These two games, put in side by side, is way more than the same game on low and ultra quality. The latter cant simply be rrplicate on PS3, It would look like a whole different game for the worse.

And what about the SSD ? Developers have been talking about How It cant help to build bigger and more complex worlds. Só when the levar designer Guy have great ambition on that aspect, How this Will be possible having to limit its vision tô fit into predecessores hardwares that lack SSD as a base for

I know. I just used it as an example for the sake of argument. Pick any title that you want and use it: the point I'm trying to make is that, just because Sony delivers good gaming experiences, doesn't exempt it from doing whatever they want with their customer base.

Every company ever including MS: "We're going to make use of this more advanced hw we're selling you to craft experiences impossible before"
You: "This sounds rubbish"
I don't even know why I enter these threads as it's filled with the same cancer. I love that you tried some sort of gotcha moment by including MS.
You're being sold a different console that has minimal improvements so you can play the games that they lock to that system. But apparently you see that as a positive so I'll let you be.

What? PS4 came out in 2013 and you didn't even have to upgrade to a Pro to keep enjoying new games. If you can't afford a new console after 7 years then you should focus on finding a better job first.
that is a stupid post. Only last year they have sold over 14 million consoles to new clients

the more 100 million of PS4 on the market didn’t sell on 2013

if the games are truly next gen, ok, but if Sony is gimping titles that could run on PS4 to sell more PS5 is unacceptable

And those 14 million players can enjoy 7 years worth of games.

Massive backlog, while next-gen starts rolling out.
Then those 14 million can do the same by the end of next-gen if they don't decide to jump over to PS5 before that time.

PS5 is backward compatible, so with this Sony is saying you are stupid if you buy a PS4 now
