Are you sure you want to save that post mate?

In some games the differences between PS4 Pro and One X are negligible already and that raw power gap is much wider than Series X and PS5. Also you do know that dynamic resolution is actually a thing right? This time the raw power gap will be even closer.

Good luck with your post for future scrutiny. You're gonna need it.
Yeah things like fps, resolution, and loading times are going to be extremely close next gen.

Digital Foundry is going to have to zoom in 300x to inspect every texture to tell the differences. It really is going to be too close to even bother with doing that.

Its quite alarming many think that the TF difference will be noticeable in games at all.

I agree but it’s also hilarious to see some “fans” to do mental gymnastics about the power differences and downplay it.

They cling to those developer words(which honestly it seems like it’s first party developers or indie devs) like it’s the last drop of water in a desert.
It makes sense to listen to what devs have to say (1st party or not) because they know more or less how PS5 works, as they are creating games for it already.

What's hilarious are some "fans" downplaying why devs are excited for PS5 because 'reasons" , Why would gaffers cling to a certain fanbase downplaying but knows nothing about even how PS5 looks, much less how it works. Some fans here even turned system architect overnight.

We also get to look forward to PS fans using a game from ND or SMS that looks amazing to try and intimate that it couldn't be done on XSX because the SSD isn't fast enough. SSD is the new cell.

I think Raytracing has the potential to be at a higher setting on the xsx because it has 16 more cus which have the rt hardware in each one and loading times will be aboit twice as fast on ps5.

I expect the raytracing to be 10-20% faster on the XSX.

They are downplaying it because some of those developers are first party studios. What else are they going to say exactly? It’s basically a form of PR.

It's not only first party developers, it's third party developers, too.

Sony didn't work so hard on their I\O to get 2x speed over their competitor for nothing.

So because some are 1st party devs who already have access to PS5 hardware and a proven track record of making excellent looking games their opinion of the hardware is invalid? Even dismissing former devs who's also excited and no longer works for Sony, yet waiving the flag because of former Sony devs now in their camp.

I quoted your post because you mentioned some are clinging to what devs said, who should people listen to then? fans of a certain console who got no access to the hardware, much less know how it works and system architects wannabes?

It doesn't hurt certain fan group if another group are excited about what devs says about the console and games they will buy. Ex. saw an X fan say don't buy "Dreams" in a Dreams thread, and if that's not pathetic, don't know what is.

I imagine that the SSD bandwitch was also not requested by the developers.

Cerny is a liar, he lied that it was a request from the developers.

Their dream is that Sony is stupid and made the SSD just for first party use.

The funny part is that apparently having an SSD doesn’t do anything in terms of game development, but Xbox fans keep bringing it up as the reason why PS5’s SSD doesn’t have any kind of advantage because the XSX has one too. So which is it? The SSD matters or it doesn’t?

You’re right, it doesn’t hurt other fans if one group of fans are excited, but this clearly goes both ways, including developers praising hardware. I expect Microsoft first party studios to talk highly of the series X and same with Sony and their studios but to say this means one console is better than the other because of an obvious biased opinion and this goes back to clinging to these opinions.

As for X fans saying don’t buy dreams, well don’t listen to them. But it’s no different then Sony fans saying that Xbox has no games which is wrong.

Dreams looks like an amazing tool for developing games that might garter mass market appeal btw, hope it does well.

I already bought Dreams, hence I was in the thread looking to find what new info I can get until the troll showed up and derailed it, was banned from derailing further.

Minecraft isn't very demanding though.
You should check out Quake2 RT because it's very similar to Minecraft RT.
Don't expect that level of RT in graphically demanding games. It will be used very selectively for performance.
RT in gereral is extremely demanding hence why not too many cards can handle it.

There’s potential for XsX to have stronger RT. Should it be obvious, we will need to see. The ssd speed advantage on PS5 however can yield obvious benefits like streaming higher res textures and details. That’s assuming devs ever bother to lean into unique strengths of each.

Jason is not a developer. Why would I trust his take on a system looking cool and having a host of features like APIs. The competition has APIs too and he’s not in a position yet to determine which one are better or if we should even care.

He basically is saying he’s proud to have his job that gets him fist looks at new gaming tech. Good for him.

As said this before, I will believe a proven system architect or nobodies on tweeter or on this forum. Some things might very well be exaggerated on Sony's side but I guarantee some things are on Microsoft's side as well but to say the ps5's features will have little to no effect on games and only raw power(on paper) matters is asinine at best.

To be fair what is being said about the PS5s features despite the lack of raw power is exactly what was said about the Xbox One launch features versus the PS4.

I disagree, most of the features touted for the Xbox one were software mainly. From the things related to tv/Dvr capabilities to the even the always online rhetoric. I see the ps5 having a good balance of both hardware and software implementation to help develop.

I've heard about the Ray Tracing advantage on Series X. Not sure how that will work as i'm not the most technical minded but it seems both consoles will have their strengths and weaknesses but IMO in the end i'm sure it will be too close to call.

Not really though. Devs will not start building games around the PS5 ssd. Why would they?
Also, the ps5 ssd is 100 times slower than the consoles RAM. Lol

for multiplatform Games we will only get less loading times on PS5. That’s it.

For RT though, this will be much better on Xbox. More CUs = more RT hardware.
we will see when the games arrive. DF threads will be interesting.

Nah, the SSD isn't fast enough to stream textures.

So what happens if devs lower the resolution to 1800p and use Checkerboard Rendering to give the game a FauxK look? Doing that the RT would be exactly the same on the PS5 and XSX.

You are quite mistaken. When the power difference between the two were out in the public, the Xbox One API and it’s custom memory solution were touted to close the gap.

Oh how people have forgotten.

I don't recall seeing Xbox fanboys saying it doesn't matter, I have said and still believe (could be totally wrong, and have said as much) that the faster SSD isn't gonna lead to much of anything except for maybe on first party exclusive games. We have had SSD's for years already on PC and thankfully they are coming to consoles now as they are great for speeding up load times and reducing pop-in for textures. Of course having even a SSD at all is a good thing.

I understand and fair enough, the SSD being used to dismiss the higher teraflops is not the best strategy to use when it comes to comparing the consoles.

I would even suggest that Mark Cerny didn't even reveal the entire console's features yet, but I don't expect them to top the 12 TF that Xbox achieved. I just think that Teraflops shouldn't be considered the only crucial factor when it comes to delivering a next-gen experience. Teraflops are important for games to achieve 4K60FPS, but what I believe consoles do compared to PC gaming setups is quite different since they have their own dedicated OS, per say.

I'm never going to claim i'm a developer, but i've informed myself lately about what makes console manufacturing difference from say, building a Gaming PC. What Cerny achieved with the PS5 architecture is phenomenal based on what developers are saying and I believe focusing on just teraflops dismisses this significant fact.
All of this

I don't pretend to be a tech expert, but everything people are saying about the SSD is very reasonable.

If data can be pulled from the SSD within seconds, then that means it like virtual memory. That's what DF, Sony, MS are all talking about when it comes to better memory usage. The thing is, the PS5 is faster and they can do a lot more with this.

Phil Spencer

Does this mean he is wrong too?
Maybe thats why the SSD size is only 825TB. They've allocated a permanent portion of the SSD to work in tandem with that fixed space, to always be at peak performance.

This is just a guess. But maybe.

RT is so heavy to utilise currently, that I'm actually really curious what will be (often) used in games. Also.. we don't really know anything for certain yet, about AMD's implementation and how "optimized" it'll be in consoles, compared to current RTX Nvidia tech.. right?

We know a lot more about the XSX solution than the PS5 (although its likely they are identical). The XSX solution is detailed performance wise pretty heavily in the Github leaks, this seems to match the Hybrid Raytracing Patent from earlier.

SSD is 825GB because Sony choose 12 memory lanes.
They choose the smaller memory module available to use... 64GiB each module.

12 x 64GiB = 768GiB = 825GB

If Sony choose 128GiB they could have 1650GB but that could be way more expensive.

Cerny explained the use of 12 memory lanes in the Road of PS5 video.

RT will be the "4K 60FPS" of this gen. smaller titles will probably be able to have full RT but I don't expect AAA titles to support it fully. Next next-gen is where it will kick off for consoles

I think the xbox fans wont be happy when DF comparisons come out. I'm expecting a 1800p vs 4k 60fps at best in xbox's favor. Thats pretty insignificant.
It was very clever of Sony not to rain on MS's parade and its claim of superior hardware.

It accustomed Sony fans that we were getting a slightly less powerful console and be accepting of it although Sony and Cerny know PS5 will come out on top.

Sony let MS's bubble grow bigger so it will explode on their face bigger.
