News Rumor Jim Ryan on PS5's Response to Game Pass: "There Is News to Come, But Not Today"

Speaking with Russian media outlet TASS, PlayStation bigwig Jim Ryan was asked about Sony’s response to Xbox’s popular Game Pass subscription service. He replied, intriguingly: “There is actually news to come, but just not today.” The executive then went on to talk about PlayStation Now, which is the Japanese giant’s cloud streaming platform.

It’s a curious statement, because when asked a similar question earlier in the year, Ryan explained that a Game Pass-like subscription “doesn’t make sense for us”. He told Games Industry.biz: “We are not going to go down the road of putting new release titles into a subscription model. These games cost many millions of dollars, well over $100 million, to develop. We just don't see that as sustainable.”

Obviously, the platform holder has its work cut out right now with the PS5 launch, so this probably isn’t the right moment to start talking about other initiatives it may or may not have in the pipeline. Consider our curiosity piqued, though – that’s a very interesting answer to an otherwise obvious question.

Let’s see how the reception of Sony’s game pass compares to that of Microsoft’s on here lol.

Lol just kidding, we already know it’ll be much better received.
If it has all their exclusive titles and is a cheap price it should be commended and you could argue the quality of games would be better overall than Gamepass but this is an Xbox innovation through and through and they deserve the full plaudits.

Cant see it.

Sorry but as much as gamepass is awesome and works really well for MS I can't see Sony adopting a similar model.

At this stage its like the movie industry with these guys as in do movie distributors release to digital day and date? Some do and more are but it will be years before they all do.

I see Sony like these guys, dragging their heels until the last possible moment and I can see why, the quality of their games is so far beyond Microsoft and I imagine that takes alot of time creativity and quality to do. A gamepass model would dilute that unless they focused on smaller titles to take up the bulk.

I'd like to see something like a PS+ benefit, where maybe being a member gets you 20% off new game purchases. Little bonuses like that. Especially if you could order from that direct sony store and get release date delivery on physical games with your PS+ discount.
I would happily take a small price increase to my annual PS+ sub if they did an overall 15-20% discount on the PS Store.

Still waiting for games like Forza Horizon 4, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Sea of Thieves, or Grounded from Sony.

As long as they dont force it inside PS+ etc, I dont care. Game pass and similar services are a rip off.

Pay expensive monthly fee and hope that games you want to play come / stay in there + also pay for games that arent in there. And I dont like digital releases anyway, no thanks.

People whom play tens or hundreds of games / year are not that common, so what is the point of having more than you can play?

On PS4 gen I paid maybe 20€ average for games, so it is 7-8 games / year with similar pricing of 16€/month. And I havent finished even half of my PS4 backlog + also have +400 ps+ games total for vita/ps3/ps4 :messenger_grimmacing_ So, ps+ is like having a gamepass in a way, hundred + old ps4 games.

If gamepass is successful for MS (and it appears it is) then Sony was always going end up offering something similar, so this will be not great surprise.

I agree it shouldn't be forced on the player base.

Sony’s three years behind, and can’t get their messaging straight. The only thing Sony is killing is Ryan’s credibility.

PlayStation Now was launched in Open Beta in the United States and Canada on PS4 on July 31, 2014, on PS3 on September 18, 2014, on PS Vita and PS TV on October 14, 2014, with support for select 2014 Bravia TVs coming later in the year.

You know PlayStation Now is Gaikai and Onlive fuse together right? You know the actual pioneers of Cloud Gaming.

You mean the pioneers of cloud gaming? PS Now has a massive value over GamePass, both in quantity and quality.
Yet here with are with Jim saying they are going to make a move to something similar to Gamepass. If PS Now was a genuine Gamepass alternative then why would Jim come out and say that they have something in the works to compete with it?

Also, how could Sony be cloud gaming pioneers when they bought their cloud infrastructure of a company that had been there already and tried to make a go of it in that space?

With replies like this one dude, I really struggle to take you seriously at all.

Why are you assuming something similar to gamepass? If anything it'll just be an improvement of the current one, because the GamePass one is just gonna gimp AAA gaming and it's unsustainable. Only a business inept would think otherwise.

PS Now is a joke wrapped inside a train wreck enclosed in a steaming pile of dung. You can't be serious.

With more than 350 downloadable games and 700+ games vs 100 of more than 90% mediocre games on GamePass and double the price. :lollipop_tears_of_joy:

PS Now is trash. No one takes it seriously. Not even Sony, or they would actually make it a service worth paying for and not have to field questions about what they're going to do to offer something comparable to GamePass. You sound like you live in an alternate universe. 🤦‍♂️😅

Bruh, he basically sounds like Sony PR in 3/4ths of his posts. Not taking him seriously is step one towards understanding what you're dealing with. 😅

Not necessarily. Sony wouldn’t have to compromise on quality or dev time. But they would need more studios to fill in the gaps. Or they money hat 3rd parties, but then the profit is not all theirs.

So, Sony must clearly have well over the 15 million Gamepass Subscribers having launched into open beta long before? 20 million subscribers or so, right? Maybe 30 million?
I mean, if Sony only had 2.2 million or so subscribers for their streaming service, that would be pretty darn embarrassing, given the lead time. Doubly so given Ryan’s original comments dismissing Gamepass.

Or, have Sony botched the messaging and been entirely non-committal on the service, leaving them three years behind were Gamepass is today?

Why would they care much when PSN overall produces more money than the entire Xbox Division? Wait until you hear about the debts of that gamepass, lol.
