Jim Sterling, Laura Kate Dale: Warning to Yooka-Laylee Pre-Orderers

I just listened to the new Podquisition episode and in it, Jim Sterling and Laura Kate Dale are warning people who've pre-ordered Yooka-Laylee :/.

They've apparently gotten review copies so they can't really talk about it until the embargo goes up but Jim said "if you pre-ordered it, think twice" (at around 32:30) and they both made some very unimpressed, ominous-sounding noises to describe their feelings on it. Later, Jim says "If you've looked at trailers and ever thought it looked a bit choppy" and then, shortly thereafter, "Yeah, yeah, a bit is not quite it." (Starting around the 41 minute mark.) I assume that refers to the game's performance being bad, though they make it sound like that may not be its only problem.

The podcast description also says: "Oh, and some… “preview” words of warning regarding Yooka-Laylee."

Those are just two people, mind you, but I absolutely would not be surprised. No video content I've seen has convinced me this effort translates well in 2017.

well,... unity?

*edit*

also, I just saw this morning some footage on youtube by gameXplain and the xbox one footage looked ok to be honest.

All the videos I've seen, possibly excluding the jungle one have looked awful.

I'm not talking about performance either.

Disappointed but not surprised. I want it to be great but it always looked a bit off from its trailers.

Crash Bandicoot at least is looking fantastic.

That's why I only intend on getting any Unity game on PC. It's just a shit engine on consoles.

Why do devs keep using fucking Unity? Isn't Unreal 4 cheap now anyway? And superior in pretty much every way imaginable at that?

Well, if performance is the issue, I'm not buying it on anything but PC anyway.

Sad part is, Playtonic probably chose Unity over Unreal largely because they were set on doing a Wii U version. Whoops!

I paid bottom dollar for it as a backer on the Kickstarter but this.....Doesn't sound good.

But but the rebirth....

Did they talk about what platform they were playing on?

Selfish but I hope it runs flawlessly on a good pc.

Already kickstarted and really looking forward to it...

Unity continues to be garbage. I at least hope a good GPUS on PC can power through it.

Gameplay wise I'm unsure myself. Maybe a 3D collectathon really can't work at this day and age.

The toybox demo controls well and is fun. But it wouldn't surprise me if the framerate tanks given the engine.

While I'm still hopeful, I wouldn't doubt this. I had forgotten this was unity, which means I have more faith in a PC version than the console. For a good example of how stark that can be even outside of a worst-case scenario, see ReCore.

Based on the prevailing attitudes a few years back in the indie section at Pax East and some of the Toronto BitBazaar events, the Unity pitch must be really convincing, because a lot of really clever people choose it enthusiastically.

Edit: Aaaand credible counter-point from later in the thread:

Uhhh...I'm not sure I understand those performance comments. That's all I will say.

Makes it all the more impressive that Nintendo get rock solid 60fps out of extremely limited hardware for their recent 3D platformers.

Was thinking about getting this on the Switch whenever that version came out, but I might just end up getting it on PC if it's that bad on more powerful consoles.

Don't always agree with Jim or Laura, but I have been wary about all the preview footage. When is release again?

Y'all keep saying "Unity" but there are Unity games that run just fine. Of course, it takes more work to get it smooth, but still. On next gen systems? Should not be an issue.

Whether the game has issues or not... backing kickstarters et similia always carries this kind of risk (cough.. Mighty No.9.. cough) so if you back one (or preorder a game, it's the same) you have to know this can happen.

Exactly. I'd love an open-level platformer that's based on the classics but also up to 2017 game design standards but Yooka-Laylee has never looked like being it from any footage I've seen.

Well it's not like they started working on this game last week, and switching engines this late in development is really hard, especially for such a small team. If they could start over I'm sure they wouldn't use Unity, but it's not that simple.

Watching the trailers so far didn't gave me the best feeling. But my concerns are mor eabout the level design than the performance. Game worlds like the casino level loked kinda uninspiring or kind a sandboxy so far. Hard to put the right words into it.

Breaks my heart but almost everything recently from this game has looked awful.
Huge empty sandbox levels with a lack of colour and fun.
I really thought they would scale things back to banjo kazooie size but sadly i think they just made levels bigger in scale just because they could.
I want nothing more than a return of banjo kazooie-esque 3d platform games but this game seems to miss the mark at almost every opportunity which is a huge shame.

You want waypoints, XP bars to fill, and maps to open?

Is this being released on all platforms at the same time?
Mostly. Switch release comes later.

Unity games with performance issues never run flawlessly on anything.

Yeah but at this point it almost feels like unity games running well are rarer than those running badly

Its a shame
