I'm currently running a Geforce 7800 w/256MB RAM, so just about anything would be an upgrade. I just know I'm not running the killer CPUs of today (C2D/C2Q/Phenom), so I didn't think I'd be able to experience the "holy shit" level boosts being mentioned in this thread.

If I can definitely do that Radeon HD4850, then I'm using that.

quit the fanboyism its very boring, downplaying cuda's benefits is pretty stupid, the ut3 physx level fps improvement is damn good, so are the photoshop and video encoding enhancements and yes it does work fine on g92 based 8800's

But on the flip side it would mean getting locked into Nvidia's proprietary code. AMD is also focussing on making it more mainstream by going open-source and at the same time providing libraries to speed it up.

Nvidia adopting it is definitely a good thing, but its not ground-breaking in the sense that they have added a capability to match/exceed their competitors'.

Side note that transcoding on Nvidia gpus needs a separate purchase of 3rd party software.

I would take those numbers with a huge grain of salt.

It's probably because one guy is using a Core 2 Duo and the other guy is probably using some quad core extreme. Doesn't account for the whole thing, but part of it at least.

I would say go with 4850, it edges the 9800gtx on more than 50% of the tests i saw, and the games it doesnt (crysis for one) it matches the performance. The only drawback of the 4850 so far is the temperature it runs, 70C idle 80C load is kinda crazy.

one thing to take into account when your looking to go crossfire or with crossfire in mind for the future is, 2 x pci-e slots aren't all the same, old boards like 965 chipset were 16/4, p35/45 are 16/4 or 8/8 and x38/48 are the only ones thats do 16/16, couple of decent articles showing you why this is important for high resolutions

i see...dont read the articles at all then, if you did you'd maybe realise that pci-e 2.0 only relates to how much voltage the slot is able to provide, it has nothing to do with the bandwidth. hence why p45 is 8/8 and x38/48 is 16/16 which if you had read the articles you would realise makes quite a big difference at high resolutions which you would probably be using if your considering crossfire

Well, all of the new cards have better performance than the 8800 GT. I'm not sure what the 8800 GT goes for nowadays, though. If it's anything over $150, just get the 4850.

200 bucks, but they're pretty easy to find for less actually. I snagged a $175 MSI from newegg, and apparently Best Buy had the Visiontek for $150.

Agreed completely (even though I already bought my new card for the next year or so). They just dropped prices of 9800gtx and announced the 9800gtx+, ofcourse, but it will be interesting to see what they do with the GTX200 line when the 4870 and 4870x2 hit.

The amount of bang for buck you have there is just crazy, it must be some kind of world record. When such a powerful card can be had for so little it totally debunks the myth that PC gaming is really expensive. That card right there is many multiple times more powerful than the GPUs in the current consoles, quite astonishing for a mere 150 bucks.

Having such high performance, and most importantly, AFFORDABLE, PC parts can only be good for the industry, the more gamers with these in their hands, the better treated the PC platform will be. Look forward to Resident Evil 5 @ 60FPS/1080p because that's the kind of performance that thing has.
