June 2008: Battleground for PC Graphics - Geforce GTX 200 v Radeon HD 4800

I'm currently running a Geforce 7800 w/256MB RAM, so just about anything would be an upgrade. I just know I'm not running the killer CPUs of today (C2D/C2Q/Phenom), so I didn't think I'd be able to experience the "holy shit" level boosts being mentioned in this thread.

If I can definitely do that Radeon HD4850, then I'm using that.

quit the fanboyism its very boring, downplaying cuda's benefits is pretty stupid, the ut3 physx level fps improvement is damn good, so are the photoshop and video encoding enhancements and yes it does work fine on g92 based 8800's
No one is downplaying cuda's benefits but instead AMD/ATI has been pushing similar things for the past years and it wasnt such a big issue then, now when Nvidia has adopted it should be an issue? How so?

AMD refines its approach to Stream Computing

Remember AMD's approach is not forcing anything proprietary like Nvidia. AMD is also pushing OpenCL, which was recently adopted by Apple for Snow Leopard.

Hmmm.... isn't this interesting?

By doing this NV is in direct violation of the 3D Mark Vantage Driver Approval Policy...

Based on the specification and design of the CPU tests, GPU make, type or driver version may not have a significant effect on the results of either of the CPU tests as indicated in Section 7.3 of the 3DMark Vantage specification and whitepaper.

Source: http://www.futuremark.com/companyin...k_Vantage_Driver_Approval_Policy_v100.pdf?m=v

This means this driver should never get FM approval because it's a 'cheat' according to their own rules.

because ati's implementation meant you had to have serious technical knowledge, nvidia's approach is more mainstream they just provide free programs to install or 3rd parties provide cheap useful programs like the video encoder

surely nvidia bringing this to the forefront is a good thing cos it also forces ati to step up their seemingly poor support for it so far, so we get great new features for free on either side of the graphics card fence

Plenty of proposition for 4850 from different vendors appeared in Germany already. Prices are in 145-160€ region. Some have it in stock even, for example here:

or here:

HD4850 became available in Spain some days ago for the same price (a tad cheaper maybe) as the 8800GT debuted.

Asus Radeon HD4850 512 MB GDDR3 PCI-e

163€

http://www.pccomponentes.com/ASUS_RADEON_HD4850_512_MB_GDDR3_PCI_E.html

tempting but I'll wait for some more news on both HD4870/9800GTX+ pricing and performance, good times.

But on the flip side it would mean getting locked into Nvidia's proprietary code. AMD is also focussing on making it more mainstream by going open-source and at the same time providing libraries to speed it up.

Nvidia adopting it is definitely a good thing, but its not ground-breaking in the sense that they have added a capability to match/exceed their competitors'.

Side note that transcoding on Nvidia gpus needs a separate purchase of 3rd party software.

Why are his frame rates so terrible? His frame rate in most those games is like half of what almost every other review out there has scored for the 4850.

Tech Report:

I would take those numbers with a huge grain of salt.
It's probably because one guy is using a Core 2 Duo and the other guy is probably using some quad core extreme. Doesn't account for the whole thing, but part of it at least.

Hotfix for 4800 series...

"This Hotfix improves overall performance and stability. The Hotfix includes the Display Driver and Catalyst Control Center."

Could a few of the owners repeat a benchmark with hotfix?

DO NOT INSTALL THAT HOTFIX !!!

It just fucked something up. My PC wouldn't even post after I downloaded and installed it. I just dumped my 8600gts back in my system and now I'm trying to figure out how to uninstall and reverse this shit.

Mission accomplished!

Crysis @ 1600 x 1200 all very high with 16QxAA...60 FPS!

So, whatcha think folks? Step up my evga 9600 GT for like 9800? Or hop on board with a 4850? Either way, it'll probably run me the same.

I would say go with 4850, it edges the 9800gtx on more than 50% of the tests i saw, and the games it doesnt (crysis for one) it matches the performance. The only drawback of the 4850 so far is the temperature it runs, 70C idle 80C load is kinda crazy.

Asus board with 2x pcie and a 4850 for only $300!

one thing to take into account when your looking to go crossfire or with crossfire in mind for the future is, 2 x pci-e slots aren't all the same, old boards like 965 chipset were 16/4, p35/45 are 16/4 or 8/8 and x38/48 are the only ones thats do 16/16, couple of decent articles showing you why this is important for high resolutions

X38 vs P35

P45 vs X48

The asus board I linked have 2 x pcie 2.0. You can't go wrong with that. :lol

i see...dont read the articles at all then, if you did you'd maybe realise that pci-e 2.0 only relates to how much voltage the slot is able to provide, it has nothing to do with the bandwidth. hence why p45 is 8/8 and x38/48 is 16/16 which if you had read the articles you would realise makes quite a big difference at high resolutions which you would probably be using if your considering crossfire

Not true. Some people working on the x264 project (completely free and open source AVC encoder) are working on implementing CUDA support.

Okay, so I'm building a PC for the first time this summer and I need someone to translate all this mumbo jumbo for me. I was currently planning on getting a 8800GT cause they seemed to be all the rage and the price seemed right, but is one of these new cards better at the same price? Sorry if you don't know yet, I know they're all brand new, I'm just trying to interpret what this all means.

Well, all of the new cards have better performance than the 8800 GT. I'm not sure what the 8800 GT goes for nowadays, though. If it's anything over $150, just get the 4850.

Thanks! Is there a set price for the 4850 yet? I'm assuming around 200 bucks?

200 bucks, but they're pretty easy to find for less actually. I snagged a $175 MSI from newegg, and apparently Best Buy had the Visiontek for $150.

I love competition. Hopefully Nvidia drops its prices like crazy or introduces another product soon so that I can wait a week and get my 4870X2 at $50 less.

Agreed completely (even though I already bought my new card for the next year or so). They just dropped prices of 9800gtx and announced the 9800gtx+, ofcourse, but it will be interesting to see what they do with the GTX200 line when the 4870 and 4870x2 hit.

Seems like 4850's cooling is horrible though, most people are reporting ~70c idle. Better be safe and pick up a 3rd party cooler such as Accelero S1.

The amount of bang for buck you have there is just crazy, it must be some kind of world record. When such a powerful card can be had for so little it totally debunks the myth that PC gaming is really expensive. That card right there is many multiple times more powerful than the GPUs in the current consoles, quite astonishing for a mere 150 bucks.

Having such high performance, and most importantly, AFFORDABLE, PC parts can only be good for the industry, the more gamers with these in their hands, the better treated the PC platform will be. Look forward to Resident Evil 5 @ 60FPS/1080p because that's the kind of performance that thing has.

What is the 25% off?

Best Buy has 25% off all Visiontek video cards this week only.

Some Best Buy stores put the stock in they got this week out on the shelves and people are picking them up for $199 - 25% off for $149.

Other Best Buy stores - like mine, are holding their cards in the back and not putting them on the shelf until after the sale is over with end of tomorrow night.
