Just had our (female) cat spayed...

And it's really tough to see her this way. We rescued her from the street here Taipei when she was a baby. I found her near the school where my wife teaches, probably 2-3 weeks old at the time. That was back in October.

I've been putting off a visit to the vet because she just freaks the fuck out when I bring her there. I didn't want to put her through the stress of having an elaborate procedure done, but obviously there was no avoiding it. The last few nights she had been WAILING like...well, like a cat in heat. So I knew it was time.

So she had it done yesterday, doctor told me to make sure she had no food for 8 hours so she would have an empty stomach. I dropped her off and he told me he had an insane time just getting her sedated.

I go to pick her up this morning and she's in the carrier, lying on a pee pad (which she had urinated on), just miserable. She's clearly in a lot of pain and depressed (the exact opposite of what she's normally like; a wily, rambunctious and curious little feline), she has no appetite though thankfully she's taking the medicine I have for her by licking droplets off my finger.

When I first got her home, she was pissed. Just that whole "Leave me alone, don't touch me, don't fuck with me" growling/hissing deal. She's finally just chilling out, but I can't get her to eat or drink much water.

It's just really tough to see her like this. Some advice from people who have experience with getting their cat spayed/neutered would be really appreciated.

Poor Izzy...

On on the flip side, she's far more receptive to having her head and ears scratched/pet at the moment. She's pretty particular about that, and has specific times when she'll allow petting. She can be a squirmy/bitey/scratchy (mostly light) little bitch at times, to be frank.

Give her access to somewhere she can hide that's dark. (under beds are great)
And pretty much leave her to it

She's rebound pretty quick.

She's been finding her way under our bed and under the sofa, but I was a little worried as I wasn't able to keep an eye on her or try to get her to eat. When I found her under the bed, lying like she is in picture, I was wondering if she wasn't doing that thing cats do before they die.

A bit dramatic, I realize. This is our first cat, after all.

Just let her relax and keep things chill/quiet while she recovers. Check the incision every now and then, and stop her (distract) if she tries to mess with it.

I had mine spayed a few months ago, she was fine after a few hours.

Why is she even wearing that collar thing anyway?

So she doesn't fuck with the stiches. Isn't that the rule for those collars no matter what it is? It's so they don't fuck with shit (stiches, cast, etc etc)

Had my kitten spayed two weeks ago, went sooo smooth. Vets said she was really good, she hated her collar but when we took her in for check up 5 days after the op they said we could take it off when we can keep an eye in her and she has not licked/bitten at her wound at all. Could tell how much the vet loved her as she picked up up and started kissing her head lol.

So yeah was pleasantly surprised how easy it was for our kitten, only difficulty was keeping her and our older cat separate as he goes mental whenever she comes back from the vets, doesn't recognise her at all and they need to be reintroduced.

Don't know, I guess it wasn't necessary for my cat. Maybe that's contributing to her mood as well? I know mine would just flip right the fuck out if I tried to constrain her like that.

To be honest it was kinda hilarious watching her after the surgery, she would try behaving like her usual self, jumping all over the place, and failing miserably, falling flat on her ass a few times. She was alright by evening and totally fine the day after, so, barring complications, I wouldn't worry too much.

Yeah, I didn't want to put the collar on her originally, but when we got her back she immediately went to licking at the sutures so I had to put it on.

It's just a big no no, as I understand it.

Mine was back to normal right after she got spayed. I didn't need the collar thing for her either. She was good at night licking or scratching the wound.

I guess it just depends on the individual cat.

I've had 4 cats that have been sprayed (all at different times)

The first 3 didn't have a collar (just wasn't mentioned by the vet) and seemed pretty much fine the day after.

The last one had a collar, with strict instructions to keep it on for a week or the cat COULD DIE etc etc.

She was freaked out the whole time it was on. Gave up after 4 days and she settled back fine soon after.

I'm sure there are plenty of occurrences where the wounds gets infected / stitches get pulled out, but still not convinced it's worth it.

I'm glad you cleared up that your spayed cat is female.

But seriously, she's just had invasive surgery and doesn't know why. You'd be grumpy for a couple of days too.

I would have been disappointed if the thread hadn't received this type of answer. Totally with you on that. My empathy level is maxed out for her.

Shell be fine. I have a female Cat too who is literally the sweetest, most lovable little thing in the world, and after getting her spayed it was really tough to see her so obviously out of it, tired, sore, etc. But after a couple of days she was back to her old self

Getting your cat spayed is the nicest thing you could do in the long run, it may suck for the minute but soon she'll be back to normal and won't be any different to how she was when you first got her.

Just give her lots of love and attention and she'll be fine :)

She will be hungry soon enough. Let her stay in a quiet area but make sure to not allow any chance of squeezing into a tight area as some cats get frustrated and then rupture the incision site when trying to hide.

Were you given any pain killers to administer op? We paid a little extra and got some pain killers to out in her food but it made her sick and we stopped. She didn't seem to be in any pain at all anyway, no grumbles or anything. Just wanted to play.

The look on her face in that picture...lol

We just had our kittens fixed (one male and one female) early this year. Wasn't to bad but the drugs they put them on forced us to confine them in a room. They were walking around like a bunch of drunks, they recovered quickly and were back to normal in a couple days. Well except for the big bald patches where they had to shave them.

I had my cat sprayed couple months ago. All went well and she recovered pretty quickly. Vet didn't have small enough suit for her and all the cones were so big that my kitty wouldn't have been able to eat or drink with it. So I made her a suit of my sock.

at first she couldn't really do anything wearing that thing. But in the end she kinda learned to live with it.

She is full grown cat but still looks like a kitten :3

Just make sure to peek at the dang wound once in a while, we left the kitty alone for one day, and somehow a infection started, cue two weeks of giving antibiotics.. :P

Regardless of hood, and bandages.

Have had alot of cats, first one that had issues, always one.

It is amazing though how fast they heal, after 48 hours the skin was allready knitting in uninfected parts.

I'm glad and a little surprised you got your cat spayed. I mean, judging from my time in Taipei, I didn't think people really cared about desexing their pets there.

Many a stray cat in heat kept me awake, lol.

Most cats handle the surgery quite well. She should be fine as long as you make sure she can't mess with the stiches (which the cone should take care off). Animals are astonishingly resistant and this will very soon have passed.

She looks exactly like my black cat... she is also very small but is fully grown. Love the sock!

My family just got a 1-year-old female cat a few weeks ago. Already have birth once. Had to get her spayed a week before last Thursday.

Before that she was meowing out the window a lot which was annoying. She was in heat all the time. Didn't help that my mom took her outside when we said to not do so until the cat was spayed.

Cinders (the given name) was also really affectionate.

After the operation obviously Cindy didn't seem the same. A combination of "losing something" and just being drugged up in general. Within a week she started to become herself again and now she's still affectionate, playful, and begging for attention constantly. I was a bit worried at how much the spaying would change her but I guess all it's done is removed that meowing out the window at 3am stuff, which is good.

I've only had a few pets in my lifetime so seeing a cat go through something like this is tough. I certainly wouldn't want to be neutered so I feel bad doing the same to the cat. That said, it's a regular part of domestication.

I promise I will never declaw Cindy, at least. That's where I draw the line.

I did the same to my female cat a few years back. She was weird the first day but was eventually back to her normal self.
Don't worry :)

And make sure to look at the wound once in a while to make sure it everything looks fine.
And since she can't clean herself, try cleaning her around the eyes with a wet napkin or something. My cat was clearly suffering more from not being able to clean herself than the wound and she started purring as soon as I helped her out.

Had ours spayed the same day we had another neutered. She was down and out for a bit, but bounced back really well. I just took care of her, brought her food and water, and kept her in a room with just me, my games, lots of things to chill out on, and a litterbox.

my mom had my cat spayed 14 years ago because one of our other cats kept trying to get all up in her punani (he was neutered too). I still have the girl that was spayed, and she's perfectly fine to this day =D
