LA Times: #JusticeForHan: Does 'Fate of the Furious' twist betray the 'Fast and Furious' family? - by Jen Yamato

We be resurrecting every other character willy nilly like the high-octane soap opera franchise that this is, but not the one most care about?

Michelle Rodriguez:
Rodriguez has played the street tough Letty Ortiz, a founding member of Toretto's original familia, through adventures and betrayals and melodramatic script turns since ”The Fast and the Furious." If anyone knows the franchise's true definition of family and loyalty — and its willingness to bend the rules — it's her.

”I know," she exclaimed, feeling the pain of the Han faithful. ”When [Deckard] was introduced, they didn't even think for us to give him any flack when he walked in. And we were like, ‘Yo, dude, this guy killed one of our boys! You know it doesn't fly like that!'"

”At the end of the day, you're talking about a Hollywood demographic blockbuster character overriding story," she said, candidly. ”That's the battle that you have when you make movies this big. They were like, ‘We know that the grand majority of the audience wants to see this guy be on your side, so that overrides the fact that he killed one of your guys.'"

”I was like, ‘I don't know if that's going to fly when we hit the Asian markets, but all right,'"
she laughed. ”I don't write this stuff. What can I tell you?"
Letty keeping it real.

Writer Chris Morgan:
Evil twins and more soap operatic tricks may or may not be in store for the remaining films in the franchise. Morgan acknowledged that as the screenwriter mapping out ”Fast 9" and ”Fast 10," he does possess the ability to bring characters back from the dead. But with great power, the saying goes, comes great responsibility.

”You really have to think about choices like that, because if you do it too much then there are no stakes in your world. The cathartic process you've had in grieving Han's death — does it undo that, or are you just so happy that he's back that you're willing to overlook that? You have to be very judicious about resurrecting characters."

C'mon, Chris Morgan. You know that's a flimsy excuse when Deckard is presumed dead and resurrected in the same movie.

Conspiracy theories:
Fans may have to see it with their own eyes to believe it — and they'll have to wait until 2019 and 2021, respectively, to see how the filmmakers address the Han pickle in the series' final two films. For now, conspiracy theories run the gamut, perhaps a little more fast and furious than what Morgan and Co. have planned.

”This is a pretty ingenious plan to bring Sung Kang back into the ‘Fast' fold," speculated Phil Blankenship, a ”Fast and Furious" fanatic and local film programmer in Los Angeles.

”It's beautiful long-form, multi-film storytelling," he argued after ”Fate of the Furious"'s behemoth opening weekend, sharing his favorite theory of how the ”Fast and Furious" franchise will make good on the aftermath of Han's death.

”The filmmakers had to recruit Statham into the team so that way Han's identical twin can hunt him down in Part 9 to avenge his brother's death. But — that in itself is a ploy! By ‘Fast 10,' the ultimate film in the series, they're all friends who form the perfect supergroup."

Gotta go full soap opera

When will BronsonLee Han have his day in the sun?!

I'm always in the sun!

Also I'm pretty sure they keep bringing it up because he's coming back

For some weird reason it was Hobbs who had the biggest issue with Deckard joining

Deckard beat his ass and bombed him/Elena off a building, that'll make someone hold a grudge

Hobbs also hates criminals

It felt of during the start of the movie, but as it went on I realized they're willing to forgive people for whatever they do (Dom in F8 included) if it was done out of the love for and fear for losing family. Of course, nothing was as drastic as killing someone, ESPECIALLY Han, so I'm a bit conflicted.

Gadot's character pulled him through a sewer grate to safety at the last possible moment and they're happy living their lives underground teaching the Mole People how to drift.

I'm pretty much in agreement with Michelle Rodriguez here. They played fast and loose (in a series that revels in fast and loose) creatively to justify bringing Jason Statham back into this movie because the studio knew that's what people wanted to see; judging by reactions they were pretty accurate.

I just wish in the effort to bring Statham back they at least gave a more narrative appropriate reaction from the crew to his inclusion instead of hoping the momentum of the film would hand wave the problematic aspects away.

I can safely say without a hint of hyperbole that the Fast and the Furious series is the greatest story ever communicated to a mass audience within any medium. Storytelling titans among the likes of William Shakespeare, Mark Twain and Ernest Hemmingway were unable to summon forth even one iota of the narrative sophistication, nuanced characterization and thematic complexity in their entire careers, that this long form epic manages to so effortlessly communicate within even so little as a single second of screen-time.

Hobbs mourned Deckard's apparent death more than Elena's. Keep in mind that he was close with Elena, something they established in 7. They tried to make Deckard sympathetic in one scene, killed him off, and then brought him back for the baby rescue. His scenes are cool but none of it works for me.

I don't know, these are dumb movies but Deckard got to skate on straight up murdering Han. That was the entire driving force of the last movie. Now the Shaws are basically comedic relief? It's fucking weird.

Han should be the bad guy in the very last movie

IT WAS ME DOM!

IT WAS ME ALL ALONG!

Han started everything with the drug ring in mexico, to even getting himself killed! It was all part of the plan!

And for fucks sake, keep Han dead so the character's storyline stays intact. Even amidst all of the F&F craziness and rebooting the franchise pre-Tokyo Drift, they managed to flesh out Han's lead-up to going to Tokyo really well.

Why the hell are people gung-ho about resurrecting characters anyways, it almost always requires a very transparent explanation that also requires a major suspension of disbelief, and still feels dumb by the end of it all.

EDIT: Also I must add, Deckard went out of his way to help save Dom's son's life too. That's no small thing on the moral ledger even if he killed Han.

First thing I said to my friends when we walked out of the theater is "How are they gonna bring everyone back, but not Han".

Everyone wanted him to have better scenes than in 7, which they delivered.

But I have yet to hear a noticeable amount of people demanding him to be in the team pardon family.

I feel like OP is also the type of person to be upset that Rousey wasn't brought back for this and defends her performance in F&F7 as 'solid.'

For as much as people claim this series is just 'dumb fun', they really get up in arms about the story.

I doubt Vin greenlights Han's return.

When did people take these dumb movies seriously?

They're flimsy with everything, I thought that was the whole reason people liked them. The storytelling in these films are ass.

Only if Han is actually dead.

They can easily write themselves out of it if they bring him back. As is, it's bullshit.

The funny thing is it's pretty doable. The death scene is more ambiguous in 6 and 7 than when you see it in Tokyo Drift. I don't know if that was intentional or just a happy accident since the scene had to focus on Deckard.

They definitely wanted that act to balance the books so to speak, but by the end I think they went too far short of celebrating Statham's character because the film needed a Happy Ending™. Had they written his interaction with the crew with Han's death in mind it could have been a more overt act of atonement.

Edit: Also whether you like it or not the ethos of the entire franchise is #family. That is the reason why this dumb creative decision is given more scrutiny than another dumb creative decision regarding physics or the legitimacy of government sanctioned automotive specialists.

Lucas Black's character sees/learns that Dom forgave Deckard and he drifts his red GT-R (direct contrast to Brian's blue GT-R/Skylines) into Dom's face. I'M IN YOUR FACE NOW. Black's character is pissed that Han is still dead and Deckard is friends with Dom.

Bow Wow and Black start a drift crew and it becomes Step Up Fast or Furious 9.

They drift battle in the wasteland that is the VW Dieselgate storage lots in the shadow of the Pontiac Silverdome.

Eastwood is Black's brother. They dominate.

Han didn't die. It was his twin brother who died.

I enjoyed the movie. It was ridiculous and dumb, but I was grinning for most of it.

ESPECIALLY during any scene with any member f the Shaw family. Statham's stuff was the best stuff in the move.

I watched this movie with a group of friends, and afterwards when we were debriefing, I ended every opinion with... "BUT HE KILLED HAN!"

This post puts it best and I entirely agree that that should have been the way to go about doing it.

Also, wtf was this movie trying to make Scott Eastwood happen?! He was trash, like all the other trash white unknown male actors that Hollywood desperate tries to make happen.

The gang must learn the ways of the occult in order to rescue Han from the depths of Hell. The gang recruit the southern guy from Tokyo Drift into the family and use him as a blood sacrifice to open up the portal to Hell. The crew engages their noss as they speed through hells gate because this time they really will ride or die (in hell)

He's just supporting comic relief. It's not like his character played a major role within the narrative beyond that.

Fuuuuuuuuuck that resting bitch face motherfucker.

I was so glad when he went up in flames. Literally wept tears of joy that I wouldn't have to endure looking at his face any more.

Michelle Rodriguez knows what's up.

I felt it was disrespectful to Paul Walker to have this new schmuck waltz straight onto the team, appear in both the main action scenes, and even drive the same suped-up Japanese cars Brian used to. Like, "Oops, better get a generic white dude in here to fill the gap!". I can accept a one movie comic relief thing, but I do not want to see him back in Fast 9.
