Kinect for PC is inexplicably $100 more than Kinect on 360.

New news, new thread.

Kinect for Windows will launch on Feb. 1st, with the sensor randomly costing $250 (Amazon). That is despite the fact that current SDK folks can use their Xbox sensors just fine.

Major Nelson says only PC's with the SDK will able to use the sensor, no word on whether 360 sensors will work yet.

Official site.

It's not worth $100, so why not charge $250!

"This Kinect Sensor for Windows has a shortened USB cable to ensure reliability across a broad range of computers and includes a small dongle to improve coexistence with other USB peripherals. The new firmware enables the depth camera to see objects as close as 50 centimeters in front of the device without losing accuracy or precision, with graceful degradation down to 40 centimeters. “Near Mode” will enable a whole new class of “close
up” applications, beyond the living room scenarios for Kinect for Xbox 360."

Shorter USB cable bitches! Learn to love it!

they are only making money on the hardware on PC, rather the subsidizing it for software royalties/subscription fees etc

The camera is the big deal I guess. It's made to be used at a PC. Still.

What do you mean, inexplicably!

you can't put a price on sparks
they're obviously selling too many Kinects so they need to slow down the amount they are selling by increasing the price and then slowly drop it.

What is the Windows Commercial Software Development Kit? Does it cost anything? Because it says you need that to run kinect.

Is the only source for the $250 price point an Amazon pricelisting? Why are people treating this like official news?

Edit: Ah, it's run by Microsoft.

Awful.

1. Kinect popularized in PC amateur development due to low entry cost for hardware and growing accessibility.

2. Release official PC version with exclusive hardware differences and higher pricetag.
