The cable network will take a wait-and-see approach with its first original scripted project, producers said at TCA.
Haul out all the plays on the word "gold" because that's what the Discovery Channel has struck with its very first scripted content, the stunning six-part miniseries "Klondike" airing over three nights beginning on Monday.
"Klondike" is melodramatic, but feels more substantial because of minutely detailed scripts, by Paul Scheuring, among others, and fully realized performances.
Klondike" was shot on location, and the cinematography is spectacular, so much so that it's almost like watching a top-grade travel documentary at times.
No, there's not much to nitpick in Klondike. It's a seriously impressive leap into the scripted world by Discovery and is worthy of exploration.
It is impossible at first to watch Richard Madden without remembering his performance as Robb Stark in HBO's "Game of Thrones." There's even a scene in snowy woods where a bearded Mr. Madden is surrounded by wolves. Yet in a miniseries full of wondersamong them all those lead actors from the U.K. or the former British EmpireDiscovery has now staked its own claim.

Discovery stakes a claim on scripted programming with the epic miniseries Klondike, and if the lavish production doesnt quite strike gold, it comes close enough to encourage further exploration. Boasting a first-rate cast, an increasingly engrossing narrative and frequently awe-inspiring visuals, the six-hour saga transports viewers back to the tail end of 19th-century life with a requisite dose of contemporary edge. Given current trends in cable event programming, Discovery could be looking at a ratings bonanza provided audiences arent so fed up with cold weather that watching characters that risk freezing to death to find their fortune is an instant turn-off.
Klondike Episode: "Part One"
Fortune seekers arrive in Dawson City, Yukon, in the opener of this series, in which frontiersmen struggle to survive while searching for gold in a remote town in the Klondike.
"Klondike," Discovery's first scripted miniseries, traffics in a lot of cliches and hoaky dialogue and takes a few strange detours in dramatizing the Yukon gold rush of the late 19th Century. But it also nails by far the most important part of the story: the unforgiving frozen terrain that made this particular gold rush as much a battle for survival as a hunt for fortune.

Food and supplies run low; Belinda double-crosses Bill.
