Man that Carmack bit was PR mastery at work...very nicely done
Technology-wise he really is...you should do some research on the engines he's worked on as a programmer especially Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Ratchet and Jak and DaxterI like the guy.
But apart from Marble Madness, he hasn't done anything truly "Miyamoto" if you know what I mean.
Crash Bandicoot and all those mascot games he worked on....they were just alsoran wannabe Marios.
Sorry but we can't sell him as an industry visionary.
edit: Just finished watching the video. Dude is very modest and his view of himself is very much what I think of him. He knows his limits.
Sony guys, we need to be realistic here, lets not make ourselves sound like mindless fanboy syncophants. Dude isn't a genius, he's just very successful and works very well within his limits.
Plus he is obviously very intelligent

He is the designer of the PS4, a console built to last a minimum of 5 years. if that's not being a visionary, I don't know what this is.I like the guy.

Hundreds of people were involved in the PS4 design. He just headed it.
wow great interview.
Even mentions John carmark and his comment on power level
"Just heading" is a small task, amirite ? Have you ever managed hundreds of people on the design, manufacturing and release of a consumer product of this scale ?Hundreds of people were involved in the PS4 design. He just headed it.

he architected it, he chose the right parts for the right job given his knowledge of how they interacted. the wizards at AMD designed the tech, an army of chinese fab technicians/labourers manufactured it and an entire corporate tier is managing the release.
i'm not sure where this desire to create a deity figure out of the guy came from.
You enjoy looking at Cerny's face while in the bathroom?

Very few people are aware of this, but the character modelling for Crash Bandicoot was performed by Andrew House. If you examine the brief video clip of the 2013 PlayStation Meeting that is repeated during the Game Informer interview, when Mark Cerny took to the stage (10:40) and Andy exclaims "That's not how we rehearsed it!", he pays homage to Crash by swivelling around to face Cerny in classic arcade style.
thanks OP! obligatory Game Changers interview with Mark on his Sega & early days with Sony, all kinds've interesting stuff therein
I really enjoy listening to his interviews.
It amazes me how Sony has turned my expectations around, before the Playstation meeting my thoughts were alternating between "It's happening!" and "Sony, guys, please, don't fuck it up...". Now when there's an announcement or an interview from Sony I can just sit and enjoy, mostly just curious about what interesting things they'll say. And Yoshida and Cerny are a big part of what made that happen.
