Kojima Productions: Peace Walker's Development Team As Large As MGS4's

It seems that Peace Walker has quite the development resources behind it.

Peace Walker’s development team as big as MGS4’s

Hideo Kojima stated last year that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker would have been called Metal Gear Solid 5 if it wasn’t coming out on the PSP. He and his colleagues at Kojima Productions seem to be backing up that claim, at least when it comes to the size of the development team.

In the latest Kojima Productions Report podcast, Sean Eyestone stated that the upcoming PSP game has “just as many people as MGS4.” They have hundreds of people working on the project and staff was added for the game. He later mentioned that, “in some ways, it’s even bigger than Metal Gear Solid 4.”

He and the rest of the hosts then went on to discuss how Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was misconceived for being a PSP game. They echoed Hideo Kojima’s previous statement about the upcoming portable title having the most content in the series (including Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots).

I don't know about you guys, but given the software situation outside of Japan, that seems like a spectacularly awful idea to spend that much money on developing a PSP game. I mean, it'll probably work out better for the game itself, but it strikes me as being very financially irresponsible.

The same size team, but for not as long a development period still counts as a lower budget game. Still an impressive effort, I hope it does well enough in Japan to make up for the rest of the world. Okay, so some big name PSP games still do well in the West, so I'm not too worried.

i for one cant wait!

sure it isn't :lol

Pretty sure that he isn't. Kojima's even talked about being jealous of the graphics that the team is able to play around with compared to Peace Walker. It's most likely Murata's new game.

While I don't have a PSP, I can always borrow my friends, since he doesn't play it anymore. I really hope the game turns out great. With that said, I really wish Kojima would Remake Ghost Babel for the DS.

Someone enlighten me:

Why is it not called Metal Gear Solid 5? Wouldn't it sell more?

Kojima said if it wasn't on PSP, it would be called MGS5.

EDIT: Beaten :(

Unfortunately for Kojima, all of those recent successful PSP titles in the west all have Final Fantasy in the title. :lol :lol :lol

Call me a glass half-full guy if you want, but it doesn't strike me as being a particularly great idea to spend a lot of money on PSP development since it's such crapshoot these days. I'm all for having all the resources available to make a game great, but it doesn't seem like it's going to pay off all that well in this case, especially with Konami's current "MOAR MGS GAMES!!1" strategy that they've been on about for a while now.

That's great... but I really didn't feel the demo at all. The controls were mind-bogglingly unintuitive. The tank boss battle was really bad/frustrating.

Huge MGS fan (including MGS4) here, but this seems like a waste of money and talent to me.

Shouldn't Rising have this kind of support?

it's been mentioned before, peace walker is the true "sequel" (prequel) to the mgs series.
kojima is heavily involved in that game, hence why the team is so big.
rising will probably be a similar situation to castlevania, in which kojima doesn't actively participate in it's development.

A PSP title can be very very lucrative through Japan.
On one hand, it's a Kojima game, but on the other hand, for it to be a successful PSP game it'd need to have giant dragons getting slaughtered by adventurers for loot.

What's going on with Rising then? Who is working on it? Is Murata directing it?

No one really knows anything... I mean, no one even knows what kind of game it is. If it's Raiden, it could be a DMC inspired thing, for all we know.

a team as large as mgs4 one on a psp game. if they're serious this game is gonna be so good it will melt our face while we play it.

god, i hope this isn't a lie.

I know what you're saying. We'll see.

In some interview I've read, he said he wanted to make Peace Walker on PSP, because that's just how people generally play games in Japan. On the train, on their DS or PSP. PSP sells like crazy there, and his son like PSP, so I guess he thought he should tap into that.

Not sure how that's going to work out with these uber-complex controls and dense MGS story, though.

I guess this is what they're banking on to justify the costs. None of the previous MG titles on the PSP got even within miles of how well Monster Hunter has done, but you can attribute that to the first two titles being radical spinoffs and the latter two titles being low budget but canon spinoffs. I guess it will eventually come down to how highly the public still regards the franchise over there.

Why would it? Kojima didn't even want to make it.

Yeah, but he said previously he didn't even want to make 4. He's been saying he's done with the series for YEARS but oddly keeps making them. It's a long running joke that Kojima doesn't want to work on the series anymore. Every MG game he releases is his last if he were to believed at the time.

There is an old E3 interview with him and 1UP where he actually says during the development of MGS4 that he wanted Snake to die so he could move on, then he goes and makes Peace Walker.

Edit: Here is the interview I just rewatched, I only remember this video since when he said that I instantly said in my head "yeah right". I forgot this is where he said that he had no clue about the Sixaxis either until it was shown on stage. In this interview, he states that in fact... MGS4 is his last Metal Gear game. But I'm sure that Peace Walker will be his last Metal Gear..... and the Metal Gear after that will be his last Metal Gear.

Really?

I don't understand why they'd put so much effort and expense into a PSP game, do they hate money? Don't get me wrong, I love my PSP and this might be my GOTY, but I'd much rather have played it on PS3 or even PS2.

On what planet were the controls unintuitive?

I'm pretty happy it's on PSP so I can play it on the train and the crapper. I'll likely even buy it twice; I'll download it from PSN just so it's always in my PSP and I'll buy the UMD because I want to own it physically too. Did the same with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

On the planet where I live and am free to say what the controls felt like to me. Intuitiveness is something that doesn't involve thought or logic... it's either intuitive or it's not.

I first tried the Action layout... that was just about the worst thing ever. No more commentary necessary there.

Then I tried the default layout (Shooter?), and that worked better, but there was WAY too much shit to keep track of and worry about. The controls weren't natural, because it was all way too complicated for PSP's available inputs.

This is a completely different thing from Kojima not wanting to do 4. He was ready to move on to new things, but he wasn't actively anti-MGS4. Kojima did not want to ever let people play with Raiden again after they bitched about him so hard in MGS2, which is why he went out of his way to make him overly cool in 4, and then never give people the chance to play with cyber ninja Raiden. He hasn't said a nice thing about Rising yet, and has pimped Peace Walker to no end -- there's a reason for that.

But he's actually not making Rising, Murata is. That's gotta count for something! Murata is a much better choice to direct an action game anyway.

And Solid Snake isn't Big Boss, so Solid Snake could die and he could still make Big Boss games.

I cannot fathom sales of this title being good enough to justify being such a big production. I hope I'm wrong, in any case.

I coudln't stand them either. of all the MGS' that require a fixed camera the PSP iterations needed one.

I wish they could port the story mode to PSN

Because people would bitch and moan 'why isn't it on PS3?' but still not buy a PSP anyway, despite having said that about several PSP titles lately (Birth By Sleep being the most recent)
