Kotaku: The Two-Year Mystery Is Over: Glittermitten Grove is Frog Fractions 2

Yeeeaaah unless this game really picks up later on, I'm considering this game a bust.
The somewhat amusing short bursts of minigames just doesn't make up for all the incredibly boring and tedious
TXT world
stuff that seems to make up the majority of this. It's just not fun at all.

So what is Frog Fractions and why should I be excited?

Edit: I've seen people joke about it on GAF, but I don't know what it is.

Hey, man. No offense intended. I think it's awesome that you guys are pushing the boundaries of what is even considered a game, and find the ARG stuff you've done leading up to this...admirable to say the least. In the end though --and I believe Jim likely knows this-- this time around you're selling a retail product that should ultimately feel worth the investment by the people who purchase it. Unfortunately, for me that's not gonna be the case. I would have loved to have given you my money for this title without batting an eye, but right now I'd be doing it because I enjoyed the first game and because the Kickstarter "pitch" video was pretty hilarious and well put together.

It's cool of you to be lurking this thread though because I am sure some people are going to like what they find here. I really don't want to turn people off from the game, but rather want to address some issues that already seem to be cropping up in the streams I have watched, which seem to have only gotten halfway through the game at most. I do hope this works out for your team in the end because I feel like there needs to be more experimental and humor-driven titles like the first game, but sadly this game doesn't look like it will scratch that same itch for me.

No offense taken - humor is super subjective to begin with even if the game is mechanically what any given person wanted, and we knew we were limiting our audience with this in more ways than one - and respectful feedback is always appreciated. I just wanted to offer some insight/clarification as to WHY things are the way they are, instead of just letting people talk about "game jam" stuff or confusing content. Hopefully there's something in here that clicks for most people or everybody - it's sort of like a stand-up routine in that regard. If one minigame doesn't land, hopefully the next one will.

J.P. LeBreton, who wrote the PLAYSCII engine that a lot of this game is in, has remarked that if everybody made something that wasn't for everybody then there'd be a lot of everything for everybody, and I personally definitely embrace that. :)

I've reached a point where I think I have to change my system time to progress and I really don't feel like messing with it right now

There's a
clock item you can get that lets you change the time. One of the mini games gives it to you, I think it's the moba

Hey, thanks for playing our ga-oh wait, you didn't. Well either way, I'll offer some thoughts on your critiques and hopefully give you some insight into why the game is the way it is.

Your contention that it's full of "game jam games" may be technically correct [the best sort of correct] in that a few of the minigame ideas started at game jams, but that doesn't mean that they're not fully developed - and they comprise a relatively small percentage even then. The two segments that began as Jam ideas actually have proven to be our most popular parts! I think "hey this idea was originally part of a game jam" is a weird thing to criticize though - lots of good ideas begin at jams, and nothing in the game is still in its original jam state as it was produced at the time.

You expressed concern that this is a "vague, difficult ascii adventure game" - fair enough! I'd disagree, given that within a few hours of the first people to find it the entire game had been completed, but difficulty is a tricky beast, and we spent a lot of time tuning it to be challenging but certainly not impossible. The game was, for a long time, even more obscure and vaguer, but that was dissatisfying. The autocorrect boots used to not be doffable, for example! That said, this game is definitely not for everybody - and neither was Frog Fractions. The idea was that we wanted to make something that WASN'T a sequel to the original in the way that most people would conceive of such, and that was stated up-front in our Kickstarter pitch.

I'm sorry the game hasn't clicked with you. Luckily there are a lot of other games out there that I bet you'll enjoy. We knew going into this that we couldn't please everybody and we're still seeing a really positive response. If you really liked the original but haven't found this game to your liking, hopefully you'll like one of the things we make next :)

Hopefully this helps address some of the things in your post!
Wait....is you being here part of frog fractions 2?

The faerie game itself isn't bad, quite a bit of work into the tree physics.

Also I had my mass effect 2 save sitting around, it does something :D.

Did anyone actually care about Frog Fractions outside of Bay area games industry people?

To me it just felt like a twitter / GDC meme.

Anyway the best thing to come out of this was Frog Fractions III aka Frog Fractions IV in japan

Hit the first deep end part, it seems.

Edit: Deep end, phase two!
A clicker... Flappy Bird
. I'm kind of amazed this doesn't already exist.
"Bubsy fan porn on Newgrounds."

I finished the game, I think? I'm watching the longest credits scroll ever. Spoiler for the credits, I guess:
Every single Kickstarter backer in the credits is listed as "Assistant to the Assistant" "Assistant to the Assistant to the Assistant", repeat forever - all of these names have a giant paragraph in front of them, it's pretty good

EDIT: More ending credits spoilers:
The credits start out as "Frog Fractions 3", so there's that. Also, if you just let it run and scroll through this INSANELY LONG credits list in the background for a while, you get a Netflix-style popup ingame that says "Are you still watching Frog Fractions 3? Click to continue" prompt.

I guess if you're looking for a very spoiler-filled first playthrough impressions (I am 100% certain there is a lot I missed, from seeing other people's screenshots):

-Whole Lotta Spoilers Below-

The game revolves around the TXT WORLD! game - it's an ascii graphics game where you can lay down Dark Souls style messages on the ground. Tour progress blockers in that world delve into these shorter games that are all interesting in their own right, and when you complete them in whatever way, you get items that are used back in TXT WORLD.

You have ones like Obama Shaver Simulator, the one where you have to be passive aggressive to your xenomorph roommate and there's a laugh track, the asymmetrical turn-based multiplayer Bomberman-meets-Splatoon game, the text adventure game where you play a detective solving a crime in Dante's Inferno (the documentation for that game is a full text copy of Dante's Inferno), and so on.

Every item you get in these games comes back into the main world and it changes the way you interact with the world in a fundamental way, so you're constantly ping ponging between these weird gameplay interstitials with unique mechanics, and then going back into TXT WORLD with a new item like a bridge, a candle, a sword (with fucking ascii sword physics, so you have to make sure you're angling your sword right as you walk down hallways or you won't move) and so on. One sequence towards the end of the game has you interacting with the frog from the first game in a heiroglyphics-style language you have to suss out through trial and error.

I got hung up a couple times, there's some stuff in the game (like a time travel machine you get at the very end of the game) that I'm sure expands out into other gameplay mechanics and things you can dig up that I just didn't even interact with. The attention to detail is definitely really good with a lot of this stuff, it's definitely worth trying to play through once without any external help.

One of my favorite parts of the game is this weird meta-narrative revolving around the band Korn, you find these purple artifacts in the world that contain these weird short news sounding stories that are read out loud as you walk around, talking about what the band Korn is doing in a weird alternate universe. You even end up arresting different members of Korn's management team in the Dante's Inferno detective simulator.

Oh, and the credits sequence for the end of the game starts with the title of "Frog Fractions 3", so go figure.

I'm stuck on the part with the frog can you give me a tip? Also did you figure out how to avoid the green key in the jumping puzzle room?

You have to basically decode the language and tell him to do stuff, and help him with his problems, here's what I wrote down as I was doing that part:

diamond = cat in a wedding dress (wife?)
ace = gorilla
male = key
music note = thank you? please?
fancy S = red
mega man power tank = blue
[ = crate
backwards y = goldfish, baby? food?
arrow = move

As far as the green key, I never did figure out how to avoid the key in that room and was still able to finish it, I'm sure that's definitely something people will figure out later.

I got into that room without the green key and it still goesn't give you enough height to reach it. It's not one of the "mind stones" that is required to finish the game (and you still get all of the non-purple artifacts) so I'm honestly kind of assuming it's a troll. (You can reach the "Candle" as long as you use the sword underneath you to give you some extra height...Ducktales style. Still not enough to get to the mind stone though, I tried for like an hour.)

I was able to find all of the purple artifacts except the "Up Arrow" and the "Pear". I searched for an hour or so after finishing the game and couldn't find them, so I gave up.

*LOVE* the ZZT overworld.

I don't think it ends. If you click the fast forward button it goes back to the fairy game billions of years later and then into this newgame+ mode

Wait a sec...I think maybe I have to get in there with max gems (so I can't pick up any more and use them as a platform AND not get the green key. Trying now...

Yep, that is exactly what has to happen.
Weird USB microphone minigame.
Only need purple Up Arrow now and I have them all. I wonder what I missed...?

I imagine I'm nearing the end of the real "main" game but I'm a bit stuck so check the spoiler at your own risk if you wish to give me a tip:

Where do I get the orange key? I have the bridge, I painted the keys, and while that allows me to jump on the green lock in the building I can't reach whatever is in the top-left above the gems. I can place four of the five keys into the sequence in the tree but I need the orange key. I also haven't found the yellow key to get into the backroom at the store. Those are the only things I can't figure out.

Edit: Nevermind. Figured it out. Made more progress and stuck again. I'm done for the night.

Finished it, I absolutely loved it. Really clever puzzles. Fantastic game. I even wish Glittermitten Grove was a bit more complete because I was having a lot of fun there too!

I played like an hour of sim fairy and yeah, it is p good if a little light in content

once I got bored I assumed that digging randomly would get me to the wacky parts and was correct; the game even promotes this by hiding chests underground

but my first playthrough ended in a game over cause I launched fireworks into my forest burning everything down

Related to this...
Has anyone been able to get the microphone minigame to respond to a non-usb microphone? it shows me a list of audio devices on my pc but I can't select any of the roles for them. I've tried keyboard, controller and shouting all sorts of stuff into my mic, but no luck so far. I'm not sure if this is a bug or if it's another puzzle, lol

Edit: looks like this might have been a bug, I'll have to see if I can find a workaround.

We specifically promised "Rock Band Microphone Support" in the Kickstarter so that's the only Officially Supported Microphone. I'm sure it works with other ones though.

I'm so confused. I've never even heard of Frog Fractions.

You should play the first until it clicks. It's a free flash game. If you play it and wonder why people took notice of it, it hasn't clicked yet.

Then you should read up on the Kickstarter for the sequel, which explained that "Frog Fractions 2 won't actually be called Frog Fractions 2, you'll need to go find it". This resulted in a 2 year long ARG which has now just ended.

Your journey is just beginning!

I'm gonna play it through to give it a chance at least, just struggling to see what I'm looking for right now. It's all very confusing. I swam for ages under mars and found a space ship which started a text adventure where I'm stuck in a room with an empty coffee can, a machine and some goop. Trying to figure out a way to get out of this section currently.

At the very least, I've no idea what to expect next XD

Edit: Beat it, ok it's just memes. People paid 20 for a sequel to this!?

If you think it's just memes then you never played edutainment games growing up.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Just started. I'm actually enjoying it as a fun straightforward resource management game right now.
