Kotaku's new, old editor sets out direction for the site (sort of)

Yes in some university thesis.
Yeah, that probably should've been enough for her to lose her job...

I have no issue with the porn/prostitution side hustle, but if Nintendo do then she should've known better and not tried to claim otherwise.

The Kotaku spinning it into a Gamergate thing is just typical of what that blog produces. Having just glanced through the article, I did expect better from Patrick Klepek than some shite spin piece.

Nintendo fired her because she was a Nintendo-themed hooker. Her hooker alias was “Maria Mint”, a play on “Mario”.

Even worse, Kotaku’s bullshit that she was fired due to Gamergate and not because she was fucking guys on the side for money (while her husband worked in the Nintedo coffee shop) got picked up by CNN:

Fucking hell.

What a farce.

Also, how the hell did she think she could get away with using Nintendo IP for her porn alias. Was she not aware of how protective Nintendo is of its IP? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I was a prominent Kotaku regular from way back. I was one of the biggest critics of their sharp turn into race and gender-baiting content in 2012 before anyone even knew who Anita Sarkeesian was.

One of many criticisms I tried to explain to them pretty much immediately when they started this is that they were repeatedly lecturing their entire readership about racism over and over was really obviously assuming that their entire readership were racist white males, when that is obviously not true. I pointed this out in 2012. It's honestly hilarious to me that 9 years later there appears to be some hint of self-awareness about that.

I was there when Patricia first started writing at Kotaku and put out some of the worst articles I've ever read. I had several of the top-voted comments severely criticizing some of the false premises she'd throw out there, and now all those glorious comments are long-since deleted. If you told me then that she would be running the site, everyone reading would have called you crazy. But now? It's honestly just kind of fitting. Hopefully she's improved somewhat. Haven't read any of her stuff for years.

Excellent, I really want to know how a video game should make me feel, not while playing it but while subjectively observing character art and subtle design choices, that if not pointed out and misinterpreted/taken out of context, would go unnoticed and uncared about.

Video Games are art. Kotaku keeps proving that art even when it's meant to be interactive doesn't need to be played or experienced to be analyzed. Like any good art critics, Kotaku truly understands that it's not what's being said or shown, but what's not being said or shown or ever intended that matters.

Logic would say that if you're making those statements, you are effectively acknowledging it is pointless to repeatedly state them across many articles, but then she goes on to say about the articles aren't for that wider readership - which it sounds like they are trying to reach.
She's saying marginalized people don't need to be told over and over again about their marginalization, so when you repeat those things over and over you are really writing that article to try to educate someone who doesn't understand, hence, that article isn't actually written FOR the marginalized people.

Anyways, that's her logic.

ROFL OK dude you go with that.

You have a date and time of the fake article that the screenshot is taken from and an archive tool link... do it or don't do it up to you, but it'd easy to just punch in the site and punch in the date.

Would anyone else like to claim the article is real without a single shred of evidence or are we done here?
This article is fake.

That one not so much :

She's an untalented writer who shoves her neuroses in the throat of clueless dude (like me) who just want to read about video games.
If she wants to write about politics, why don't she apply for a job in media that does politics?
My take is that she knows she's too dumb to get a journo job anywhere else so she stuck there and bitchy about it...

Hey now, don't be mean.

Give us the archived link, not the actual link to Kotaku.

I can't believe you're making me attempt to defend Kotaku, but, why didn't YOU do this and find the article and post it here?

Edit: For prosperity, I did the deed. The absolute latest I could find was articles on the front page ranging from before the time in the image above.

Further searching didn't bring up the article. Another thing about that image you posted, is that the category of the article is set to "Women" and it seems like they never had such a category. If they would pick anything, it would have been "Opinion".

It also seems like it was all hands on deck for the PlayStation 4 announcement.

I'm not saying the article didn't happen and it was removed, but, this can be, and probably was faked pretty easily.

Yeah, so I thought that meant essentially the articles would drop all that out of them and just be game articles (for everyone, not just to appeal to these sub groups), but then she says this:

But what I’m getting at here is that I am terrified about my tenure at Kotaku because I am an idealist. Failure seems inevitable. But I am the sort of cursed person who cannot shoot for anything less than changing the way the game is played.

It's like the real issue has been identified, they're on the right track but then it's like fuck that.

Doesnt matter if youre a website or a YT streamer. If you got good content and an already known name (like Kotaku) you'll survive. I can understand an awesome content creator never getting noticed on YT or on some small site because he's an unknown, but Koatku, IGN, Gamespot etc.... are all well known game sites.

All you got to do is create good content to keep them coming.

If random dudes on YT can have millions of followers and making good money doing daily COD streams and weapons guides, I'm sure these game sites with a ton of workers and freelance writers should (in theory) be able to come up with better content than repetitive shooter videos.

Nah I think she just means the articles won't go into detail explaining why X thing is bad.. they'll just bring it up w/o that.

It's a terribly written article lol

I'm the resident woke-y here who can translate it though.

Props for actually doing this, I'm trying to get people into the habit of checking things even shit that supports there point before posting it. What really irritates me is there are actual real examples of terrible hot take writing from her but the one that keeps getting used is this one.

I'm reading some messages under the article, even their readers are complaining about their editorial line and think they are beyond salvation.

Kotaku was a good site until they began to write unwanted opinions, and mostly of their opinion are "things you like are wrong".

Yup. Early to mid 2000’s Kotaku was my shit. Around 2011 or so is when I said “fuck y’all” and stopped reading.

If you're hiring anyone who doesn't passionately enjoy playing video games to talk about video games on your site, then you've already missed the audience most willing and likely to pay for your content. It's that simple.

While it's generally true what she says about everyone games nowadays, but the wider audience games almost passively, meaning they don't actively look to become more knowledgeable in that area. They go to the app store and probably play whatever pops up that catches their eye. Or they play that game their buddy showed them. They don't need Kotaku for, literally, anything. They will take the word of mouth of a friend as gospel.

So in this way we can see that Kotaku is still way off the mark. Articles about feminism in gaming are going to reach a very small segment of big G Gamer, and I'm being generous here because I don't harbor hate for really anyone. Please do, enlighten me with the feminism... every once in a blue moon is fine. But people who actively game are actively interested in finding out what they didn't know about gaming. The reason we come to GAF is to be exposed to gaming content we wouldn't otherwise get exposed to. I would frequent PlanetGameCube (NintendoWorldReport now) in the hopes of finding out why I should show more interest in a game like Mario Golf or, perhaps, learning of some secret content in a game I already own. These sites are supposed to be additive to the gaming experience. It's not just about news or reporting, and it's not just about the hype train.

I'll say it one last time as the conclusion here: Gaming sites are supposed to be additive to the gaming experience. Going to your site should be an enhancement to the gaming activity.

Usually when companies close down, I have concern for the workers and hope they get a job elsewhere. Usually. Not in this case. The mega-woke infested an industry. Tried taking it over. Failed.

I'm for inclusivity, but when u aim for 1-5% of the population and tell the other 95% they are wrong or bad, it won't be financially sustainable.

"It does not matter if a website is considered “progressive.” It says everything that, when writing about certain issues, video game websites often have to take care in explaining basic-ass concepts like “racism is real.”

"I do not want to tell my writers to grow thicker skin, though inevitably they do. I want the world to be a kinder place. It shouldn’t require bravery to write about fucking video games."

Now see, this is the kind of shit I am talking about here. Video Game "journalists," think they have the responsibility to teach their audience about racism, politics, world news, and cultural shifts/dynamics in society. Then, she fucking acts like it's some form of bravery to be a video game "journalist". Jesus, cry me a river. You want to lecture us how bad we are or how bad the world is but then when you get criticism for your shitty writing, you cry victim and act like it was some brave act.

News flash, If I want those types of discussions I would actually do proper research and listen to discussions from professionals in their respective fields. Not some high and might video game journalist.

This article is fairly amateur. Way too much rambling and non-important stuff muddles the point the author was trying to go for, whatever it was.

Can't wait to hear about the moronic articles she writes "gaming helped me deal with cheating!" Always comes to mind when I think of her.

Holy shit Patricia Hernandez is the editor in chief?Just when you think that place can't get any worse. When Crescente was in charge it was a decent site, then under Totilo it started to drop and when he left it went to complete shit.

I remember reading a few reviews by Patricia and she would always talk about how she was raped, even though that was completely irrelevant to the game she was reviewing. She always brought everything back to that. I'm sorry that happened to her but it's not what I'm looking for in a review.

Nail on the head. This is why gaming news outlets are a dying breed. People love to mention youtube, but when I'm busy writing/working I don't have time for youtube. I do have time to hit a website occasionally, but I'm not going to go there to be beat over the head about topics I may not fully agree with and don't want to be exposed to nonstop.

The only positive thing I remember about Kotaku was when we had like a 20 page celebration thread when there were rumors that they were getting shut down last year. The atmosphere in that thread was one of jolliness and positivity.

Then it ended up being untrue. Then there was the big sad.

It's funny that Kotaku considers themselves a game site. Video game enthusiasts detest their site, and they absolutely hate gamers. They're more of a political site that covers games.

You know I see why the run in such a tight protective clique now because they all tends to fail upwards. After Her conflicts of interest problems , Sourcing problems, hyperbole problems etc. I have no hopes of Kotuku ever getting good. Something that's stuck out to me as funny too is how Nathan Grayson was the big lynch pin with the whole situation about him banging Zoe and now the only stories he really writers are about women on twitch. It's like did no one think about hte optics of this for two seconds.
