Max is 100% on board I suspect but I really do hope Andy doesn't come along. Conan was doing just fine without Andy in the Late Night show and would have done well without him in Tonight show. Also what are the chances Conan growing his beard back if he gets a show on fox ?

Bring back the beard Conan !

Andy works just fine, they just need someone else to be the announcer. Andy as a couch potato is his best role.

I agree completely. Andy is funny and has amazing chemistry with Conan, but his voice just doesn't have the weight to be a good announcer.

Joel Godard had a great voice for that job.

Yeah, Andy on the couch and Joel as the announcer would be amazing. Like Andy a lot, he's really consistently funny and sometimes has great insights but I really miss Joel.

My all-time favorite late night show was the Arsenio Hall show from back in the late 80's-early 90's. They pulled the plug on him too quickly.

Andy seems more like a guy doing an imitation of an announcer. It's a job that he would never get under normal circumstances.

I can understand that he was the first i started watching and he had on guests/music that other shows didnt and that i liked

I don't think anyone would care about Joel if he only ever announced things. The reason people remember him and miss him is because he did other things. So to be honest I think having Andy and Joel would just be too many people.

Joel was really good in skits too. Never did find out why he didn't make it over.

Maybe he didn't want to move to LA? How old is he? If his life was pretty well established in NYC, I can see why he would decline.

I suppose one reason why Andy had to be the announcer is that, since Conan spent more time away from his desk, they needed an excuse to have Andy at that lectern. It might have seemed a bit strange otherwise.

Agreed, but I would take Joel and his asian male prostitues over Andy any day.

But the thing about Carson, it was like watching your Grandpa every night. He was charming , and when a joke bombed his reaction would save the day. He was just comfortable, and even though you knew Letterman was technically funnier, you never dissed your Grandpa.
I think thats a good way to put it tobor. I think i didnt get to see carson in his prime so he never got to revered grandpa status to me

You know, it really is fascinating finding out info about Leno's workaholic nature. The guy is emotionally dependent on his work due to not having anything else to really do. It's honestly sad, and makes me sort of feel bad for him.

I am Leno's exact opposite.

150%. Max is fine with juggling Springstein with Conan, and Andy, well, sadly he's never going to achieve the status he wants to.

Max doesn't really have anything to juggle. Bruce is done touring.

I'm so pissed I didn't go to his last show. My brother and sister went, and apparently it was epic. He played for fucking ever. Can't believe he chose Buffalo as his swan song.

Carson slowed down in his last few years, and as a kid growing up in the 80's, Dave was the hipper edgier host, just like Conan was.

The sad thing is that Grandpa will still a lot edgier than Leno.

Any die-hard Conan fan will tell you the best parts of his monologue are when a joke completely bombs and he has to figure out some way to save it. The written parts of his monologue have always been passable at best, it's the frantic clowning that makes it stand out.
I've watched conan a lot and agree, but this has always been a week defense. To the casual viewer they will just be weak jokes. Never understood why the monologue never improved much since he's a funny dude

Masturbating Bear? Gone. Owned by NBC, won't be able to move with Conan. Same for In the Year 3000/Conando/all the other stuff.

i figured.. but couldn't they have other animals masturbate? maybe a masturbating Leno? :P

and triumph isn't that pig of a deal, the puppet is just an outlet for Robert Smigel.. I'm sure he can create another one.

He'll just have to create new characters. Like autoerotic wombat.

I think that when Dave left NBC he could no longer use the name Larry "Bud" Melman for the guy who played him.

BrandNew said:
alright this is just absolute bullshit

I have hate hate copyright/ownership sometimes

Just as long as they don't get Triumph...

The end of the article does state that he doesn't have interest in taking the NBC characters with him wherever he goes, so that at least makes me feel a bit better about it.

They should just keep using Triumph anyway wherever Conan lands, and just pay the fees required, or whatever.

I don't know how any of that works so maybe they can't do that.

Not sure if Triumph is also owned by NBC. That might be Smigel.

And sure, most stuff could probably be easily renamed but stay the same. In the Year 4000, El Conan, The Masturbating Lion, etc, etc. But we'll see how much Conan would *want* to keep.

Fuck... Now we better see them on this week, seems like our last ever opportunity. =(

But on the hand, I look forward to whatever new sketches/characters we're introduced to in the future. =)

well with pimpbot and masturbating bear i have already come to terms with being gone.. plus there are no limits as to what great stuff will be done in the future. Conando was new and great and a sign that there will be new "classics".

dude how old are you? I mean i fully get that the simpsons is so great that you can watch shit over and over and pick up new references each time, but dayum, you didnt know the shinning reference? That entire portion of treehouse of horror WAS the Shining.

Grounds keeper willie "you mean the shinning do you want to get sued"
Off course I knew the whole "Shinning" thing was a parody of the Shining. And I know Nicholson did his "heeere's Johnny" line in there. Now, I haven't seen The Shining (you can shun me for that though, one day I'll make this wrong a right), so it wasn't even until recently that I got to know that Nicholson's character in the movie is not named Johnny. :lol I just thought he was introducing himself.

For the Simpsons episode; I know who Letterman is and I know that Homer was basically doing a parody on the introduction of talk show hosts. However, I never understood why because I didn't know Jack's "heeeere's Johnny" was also a parody on such an introduction. The moment you don't know who the "Johnny" person is that Jack is referencing in that movie, you aren't able to connect the dots in the Simpsons joke.

I thought I'd explain this, since the amount of posts complaining about "kids today" and "oblivious people" looking at me is a bit annoying. I'm not American and I didn't know that name of a legendary American talk show host who hasn't been on the air for 20 years is Johnny. I'm not all knowing! In fact, right now I'm one of the 0.1% of Belgians who knows who Johnny Carson was. Hey, could you name me one prime minister from Belgium? :P

Edit: should've kept on reading this thread. Trurl and Alex already explained things for me, which is much appreciated. :)

THey did the same thing to Letterman. When he moved to CBS he just renamed the stuff. Like Viewer Mail became CBS Mailbag. And the Top 10 name was changed to. Conan can easily work around it.

This whole situation is depressing. Conan will definitely find work elsewhere, but I still feel bad for him with the way this has all gone down.

So now what?
Move to Fox and try to succeed where Chevy Chase failed so spectacularly?
Rejoin The Simpsons writing staff?
Porn?

I don't get this focus on CoCo writing for The Simpsons again.

a) It'd be the biggest demotion in WeirdoWood history
b) John Swarzwelder is the missing heart of The Simpsons, not CoCo. He only wrote like one and a half episodes.

People are in denial about a lot of things, the potential for the Simpsons to not be terrible being one of them :(

Was Conando really new? I could have sworn I saw Conan do that Spanish telenovela thing on Late Night.

I want Conan to do either:

a) receive a show on Fox to do his show for the extent of one contract, then take over for Letterman
b) Start a podcast/radio show that he does for a few years, then takes over Letterman
c) Becomes a showrunner for a few years, then takes of Letterman
d) all of the above

Basically, I just want him to take over Letterman.

I'm trying to understand why Joel didn't go with Conan to the tonight show, was there a reason?

He was old and lived in New York. I just don't think he was ready or willing for that commitment.

Yeah, Goldenage writers are long gone and Simpsons will never be good again. Also Conan is made for TV and you can see that he likes doing what he is doing and isn't going back to some dark office to write Simpsons episodes. He wants to stay on tv.

BTW what is the situation with Letterman ? Is Ferguson going to take over him or Conan ? Ferguson has pretty good raitings (beating Fallon and before that he was beating Conan) so there should be no problem... Then again I really think Ferguson's humor would not cut in earlier time slot so who knows.
