Well, if there's any truth whatsoever to the "tone down on the NBC trash talking" clause of the deal, then I would definitely expect Howard not to be on. What would be the point?

I really hope that isn't true. I was really looking forward to another week of what we've been seeing this week. If Conan has to go out there and pretend that everything is back to normal, it's going to be disappointing.

I thought the "tone down the bashing of NBC" thing was for after he leaves?

Is that effective immediately? The way I read it, it sounded like the clause would go into effect once he actually leaves the network.

Leno's fanbase barely even know any of this is happening. They'll turn on the TV when leno is on TTS and go "oh, I thought he was on at 10 now? I guess that was like a few month special or something, back to watching him after the local news. lol his monologue was teh funnay!"

I'm saying it's PR spin because they had to explain why they would put on a talk show instead of original scripted programming every week. Also because people like you actually believed the plan was originally to put Jay at 10pm rather than Jay getting cold feet about retiring.

I think changing it to whatever would be funny, so long as people are ready for the screen captures the second it goes up.

I hope conan doesnt just cave like the cant talk bad about nbc thing and cant have a show for so long. I think he will have to stay away fora while but anything more then 6 months is too much. He should just keep doimg the show until he gets a better offer from nbc

:lol People like me. I'm not even sure what that means.

NBC thought that the money they could make on a Leno show at 10 would be more than the profits from 5 different primetime shows on top of the losses incurred from competing against him on another network. If they didn't they wouldn't have given him the contract in the first place.

These decisions aren't made on a whim. They have some crack team of monkeys in some room doing all these calculations. This is actually easier to figure out than what shows will and won't be hits. I don't think any of the networks except perhaps CBS have that down.

Leno was getting his ass kicked by many 10pm Cable tv show slots. Sons of Anarchy and Burn Notice did it too. I forget what that TnT show is called but I believe that did it too.

It's funny to think adults watch Jay Leno, but these people are really in their rooms coloring- and if they stay within the lines, it might go up on the fridge, but it won't because elephants aren't orange, the idiots.

I'll just say I'm glad to see many here appreciate, respect and like Johnny Carson :D He really was the best at what he did. There will never be another Johnny Carson, ever again. He and Ed were great. For those of you who either really love him, or want to see even more clips and stuff I HIGHLY recommend the 12 DVD "Heeere's Johnny!" DVD set. WELL well worth every penny. I asked for it for Christmas a few years ago and got it. Great stuff..alot of the more memorable clips are in it..including the Chip Lady some posted Youtube links of..his final show in it's entirety..alot of the more memorable animal guests he had on and even a few of his very rare specials are on there too. The one where he went back to Nebraska is in the set. Here's a link for those interested in it and might want to buy it:

It's $77.99 and in stock at Amazon. They're about the only place I've seen it recently. Some Best Buys occasionally get one or 2 but if you're interested in it Amazon's your best bet :) It's getting somewhat more difficult to find now so now might be a good time if you want it.

Yes, it is kinda pricey but it's well worth it if you appreciate and respect Johnny and his comedy.

As for the current Late Night mess, I have my own opinion but it'd be best for me to stay out of it...just thought I'd pass along the info about the Johnny Carson DVD set!

When it's all said and done, Conan, just like Carson and Letterman, actually left a mark on late night television and comedy in general.
