Late to the Funeral: Fallout 2

I think I first played Fallout 2 some 6 or 7 years ago when I didn't quite 'get' it, downloaded an editor and shot up every town. I recently made the mistake of reinstalling it and giving away my free time to this post-apocalyptic time sink.

What a marvelously DENSE game. The sheer volume of stuff to do is staggering. Isn't this what we should be expecting from next-gen gaming? Alas, I seem to have managed to exile myself from Vault City and with no way in, I can't seem to complete the game. One of FO2's many game-stopping bugs. Still, here I am at 2AM, barely awake, barely cogent and all I can think of is starting a new character...

Fallout 2 kicked ass. I am keeping hope alive that the Bethesda Fallout game is A. for real B. doesn't suck and meets all it's potential

Vault City is not critical to completing the game, from what I remember. Shit man, you should thank them for kicking you out. Now you don't ever have to deal with that bitch Lynette again.

A. It is real, they've mentioned it in interview lately (won't be at E3)

B. We can only pray

You can finish the game without being accepted in Vault City. It's not a bug if you get your dumb ass kicked out and don't plan ahead :-p

edit: More specifically, the only truly useful things you get out of Vault City are: A chance to help one of the cities(name withheld to avoid spoilers) and the location of another area. You can find any city in the game by wandering around, though. So it isn't a complete loss. Granted, there are a lot of quests to do, and some fun things in general, but you can still get to the endgame without doing any of it.

Half the fun is killing entire towns that piss you off, anyway.
