Long version

Say the new consoles are coming out. They're a little bit more expensive than we'd like (but not extortionate) and we still have a satisfactory backlog of games to enjoy. There are still games coming out on our existing consoles, and no vital reason to upgrade as of yet.

Give me the games that change this. The theoretical games that, for you, makes the purchase of new hardware a day one need.

They could be sequels to established franchises, for example "Uncharted 4"/"Halo 5"/"Super Mario Galaxy III" might simply be all that is needed for you to get on board. They could be more elaborate, dream projects that are highly unlikely to actually be made but would be enough for you to overcome any aversion to an expensive day one hardware purchase. They could be remakes, reimaginings or revisions of existing games. They could be something else entirely.

I want one game for each of the Wii U, Playstation 4, and Xbox 720 that will make you buy the console at launch. Feel free to elaborate as much as possible about the specific theoretical game, the talent behind it, the gameplay style, the franchises/IPs, the inspiration, etc.

Try to make your suggestions imaginative but not impossible - ie a "Final Fantasy IX Remake" is legally possible, "Mario Versus Halo" is not. Consider the broad range of IPs owned by each first party for example, or even third party resurrections of favoured but long-dead franchises.

If there is simply no possible game that will make you buy the console at launch, then state this.

Short version

Wii U

Playstation 4

XBox 720

Give a theoretical game for each one that will make you buy the console at launch, even if you have a backlog and the hardware is a little bit more expensive than you would like.

Try to give an answer for all three if you can.

1) Early adopters always get screwed

2) Launch titles generally are not good, and it will take years to see any games that fully take advantage of the hardware

3) screw all three of them before they make a decent stab at online gaming. its just trolling at this point.

I've learned a lot from this gen, but here goes anyway.

PS4: God of War 4, Jak 4, Maximo 3 (Capcom I know)

Wii U: Zelda

Xbox: Halo 5, Crackdown 3, Gears 4

Wii U - Probably that new Zelda HD game. I would've said Dragon Quest X but not anymore...you know why.

XBOX 720 - I'd say Gears of War 4 is the best game I can think of. I lost interest in Halo over the years so Gears is my favorite MS franchise.

PS4 - Final Fantasty VSXIII. I'm kidding, I'm kidding! :P ....no but seriously, Uncharted 4. I think that's the closest I'd come to a day one launch game/system.

The truth is that I wouldn't buy a 720 or PS4 at launch even though these games are part of the launch. The only system I'd probably get is the Wii U for Zelda. But I know Zelda won't come out for a few more years. But I'd get a Wii U at launch for Zelda.

Wii U: Will get regardless, knowing the first party games I always love will be there sooner or later.

Xbox 720: Didn't get the 360 until late 2007 and can wait on the 720 as well. Unless Fallout 4 is an exclusive somehow.

PS4: Still deciding if I should ever get a PS3.

Wii U: Super Smash Brothers U / Zelda U

Xbox 720: Um, don't really care about any of the Microsoft exlusives...I'd probabyl grab this for a Fallout/ElderScrolls/Bioware game.

PS4: Final Fantasy XV I guess

I only plan on buying either a new Xbox or Playstation at launch. Wii U, I'll be on the fence with, but these are the titles that would sway me over...

Wii U- Metroid Prime 4. A Retro developed first person Metroid, with 360/PS3 caliber graphics would be the only game that could make me buy a U at launch.

Xbox 720- A really strong exclusive second or third party game, because Microsoft doesn't really own any ips that are must haves for me.

PS4 - God of War or War of the Monsters 2

PS4: MGS5 (6?) or Team ico game #4

3rd XBOX: Halo 5 or Gears 4

WiiU: new 3d Zelda or Mario

I still usually get home consoles around launch anyways (if the price is reasonable and the launch games are not all shit).

I actually put a lot of thought into what games would make me buy day 1, only to realize that there really aren't any. With Sony's bullshit pricing of a PS3 model that was sure to die, Microsoft's inability to create their own hardware and charging for shit that shouldn't be charged for, and Nintendo's progression towards mediocrity, I'm going to wait it out this time. Fuck being an early adopter.

Playstation 4: God Of War 4, Uncharted 4, new MGS, RDR & Assassin's Creed would be day one purchases.

Xbox 720: Nothing. None of their exclusives save Gears have got my attention.

WiiU: Nothing.

The strangest responses are the ones where people insist they will be buying the hardware day one, regardless if there are actually any games out for it.

Its a mentality I find somewhat difficult. Its like paying to get into the cinema when there are no movies on.

I dunno, I find the ones like boombloxer to be the hardest to understand. Okay, I get he's a Sony fan, but let's look at it:

He lists several third party games for Sony, but then says there's nothing on Xbox because none of the exclusives would matter. What if MS pulled RDR2 as an exclusive, or Assassin's Creed? Something like that?

Or Wii U. Nothing? Nothing at all? Absolutely no exclusive lineup could sway you? What if they lined up MGS5 out of nowhere? Just as an example.

I don't know. Seems weird is all.

Wii U
Metroid Prime styled title developed by Retro. HD Zelda.

720/PS4
Nothing that I'd consider system sellers as they tend to be my secondary consoles.

XBOX 720: HALO 5

PS4: GT7

WII U: Zelda Tech demo as a real game.

WiiU: Smash Bros.
PS4: Anything from Team Ico, ANYTHING.
Xbox: Jet Force Gemini 2 or Banjo Kazooie 3

Will probably end up getting them all on day 1 anyway :/

PS4: Cross game chat
Xbox 720: 6 year warranty
Wii U: An account system just like on xbox

That's all I need.

PS4: I can see that happening
Wii U: I can see that happening
Xbox 720: Not in a million years will that happen hahaha!

I just like "new stuff". Not that I like throwing money out for no reason, I still need a "personal reason" to get one. But to me launch games are just starter games. I don't need "that one game" to get it, I just need to just be interested., If I wanted for specific games and specific prices; I'll probably be waiting right now, for... everything.

Got a PS3 back then day one with Resistance; but it wasn't like I was dying to play Resistance. Got a 360 close to launch with Kameo and Dead or Alive; yet it was Fight Night the game I played the most back then. Got a Wii because: it's from Nintendo + motion controls + Wii Sports..and there was Zelda too.

Didn't get a 3DS at launch; mostly because of lack of money. Yet, on July got enough through trade-ins and got one. Now, close to 3 months later have one with 10 NES games, 9 retail games (2 which are regular DS games) along a few apps, digital ones. Recently received an 8GB SD Card, have music on it, browse online here and there. Didn't needed that one game. I mean, got Ocarina of Time 3D with it but that was because of the purchase and not the main reason.

I'm going to purchase PS4 for sure, but only if CAPCOM makes Resident Evil 7 (6 is for that gen) and
Bandai - Dragon Ball Budokai 4
exclusive to any platform I'd buy it.

720: there isn't one game that I have to have. If there is as good a launch lineup as there was for the 360 I will be there day one. Kameo, PDZ (no matter how flawed), Amped 3 (!) and of course Condemned ;)

PS4: To be honest it will not be games alone that make me purchase the PS4...it has to have a better controller and be released with a more reasonable price for me to want one at launch. I cannot think of an exclusive that would make me have to have it. Maybe a new Final Fantasy if it was the best in the series, otherwise a FFVI/VII/IX remake if done correctly would make me consider it.

WiiU: There isn't a game on the planet that could make me buy the WiiU at launch, current gen hardware and a likely next gen price...sorry but I'll have to pass on that deal.

PS4: Metal Gear Solid / Uncharted 4 / Gran Turismo 6

XBOX720: HALO 5

WiiU: Metroid / Zelda / Mario / Wave Race / F-Zero

I'll be buying all three, but most interest in WiiU....can't wait to see what Nintendo can do with powerful hardware

Wii U

Zelda
Next Mario game
Mario Kart

Xbox 720

New IP "killer app" like Gears of War was on release
Halo Battlefield type game. (Wouldn't this be sweet? With a persistent online aspect)

PS4

MGS6? Will Kojima make another, probably.
Dark Souls/Demons Souls successor

And then enough next-gen multi-plats to make it worth it. Quality sports games, racing games, etc.. This past gen the early sports and racing games sucked.

Obviously you know something that we don't know

A Metal Gear game or Persona. Then I HAVE to purchase it (I bought my PS3 solely for MGS4, and an american PS2 for P3FES and P4 after trying P3). But then again knowing myself I'd buy all three of them, but in which order the first console I'd choose must have MGS or Persona.

Does it have to be first or second party? That limits to much. Id like a FF5 and FF6 full remake, a new mainline Guardian Heroes in the spirit of the Saturn version, a new Uniracers, another Breath of Fire, Another ActRaiser, a New ground up Gradius, another Baku Baku animal with plenty of online vs features and a new Final Fight or Double Dragon.

I would follow those games to whatever platform.

Wii U: Mario or Zelda most likely. Big surprise. I'll buy one anyway, to be honest, but, having played all they had to offer at E3, I don't anticipate being too thrilled with it.

Playstation 4: Tough to say here. Maybe another Flower game, or something from zany Japanese developers. I like zany, and Japan knows how to bring it.

XboXboX: Alan Wake, for sure. Gears could do it, though I believe Gears 3 was the last one that Epic's contracted to produce. Of course that could change. Too Human. You heard correctly. That game is totally bonkers, but I had blast right-sticking through the periphery of giant battles. I would love to see a sequel get even mor bombastic and ridiculous, and adddress all of the oversights and shortcomings of the first.

I might buy the XboXboX if it features some sort of refined full-body experience that isn't mostly terrible.

Wii-U: Exclusive game where the art styles is totally 100% what I like.
PS4: Day one unless it's just a rebranded Nexbox.
NexBox: Day one

I love threads like this. You guys really come out of the woodwork

PS4:
-Metal Gear
-Buying regardless

720:
-Gears
-Depends on if they go full-on Kinect.

WiiU:
-New Miyamoto IP (Something that fully-realizes the tablet.)
-New Zelda
-Buying regardless

Wii U
I was actually just thinking yesterday how there's really nothing on the system that would be a must buy. I can live without Mario Kart and Smash for awhile, or forever, honestly. After playing Galaxy 1 and 2 to completion, I've come to realize that I honestly don't enjoy the 3D Marios that much. Pikmin 3 would be cool and all, but not "I gots to have it" cool.

PS4
Makai Kingdom 2. No hesitations.
Final Fantasy Tactics 2. A proper sequel, not more of that Advance crap. Again, no hesitations.
Guilty Gear XXX or whatever the next one should be called. With this one, we're not even talking about preordering day one. I'd import a Japanese PS4 and game just to make sure I have this as soon as physically possible, assuming there's no same day worldwide release.

X720
With Team Ninja being what it is, I can't find a reason.

I don't think there's even a small chance for FFT2. MK2 could actually happen, since the PSP just received a port of the first game and the characters are kind of popular. Still, I don't see a reason to hope out hope.

GGXXX is something I definitely expect to see during the next generation. There's absolutely no reason that won't come to pass. Heh, so as it stands now, I'll likely be getting a PS4 whenever the next ASW fighter drops.

None i think. Closest things to get me buy a new console at all are some Mass Effect or Halo game but only if the console (next gen Xbox) would be rather cheap (€300 is absolutely maximum). And even then i doubt i'd get it right away.
