• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Launch titles that would make you purchase the WiiU/PS4/720 Day One.

Wii-U: HD Zelda or Mario/Mario Kart
PS4: Nothing. My PS3 kinda collects dust since im done with Infamous 2 and Uncharted 3
New Xbox: Anything, i love the 360 and the arcade marketplace. Just bring on the fancy graphics and ill be happy.

I own all 3 systems now and im mostly on my 360 and PC.

I really want something with an 8 in the title...what franchise can give me that?

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer!

Anyway, on topic:

Nintendo's bench strength makes it hard for me to list showstoppers.

For MS and Sony, it would pretty much take Resident Evil 6, an exclusive Kamiya game, an exclusive Kojima game, or Geometry Wars 3 to get me to bite, and we know none of those are launching on day one.

  • Okami 2 full console sequel
  • New Smash Game
  • Marvel vs Capcom 4
  • CVS3
  • New Megaman
  • Phantasy Star 5 (turnbased, back in Algol, full sequel to 4 and outsourced to Mistwalker baby! We're getting all kinds of "Lost Odyssey up in this sequel!)
  • Terranigma Sequel
  • Open World Vampire Hunter D game from a legit studio giving it the AAA treatment
  • Culdcept Sequel
  • Sega Releases a "Freedom Fighters" Universe reboot in game form with playable Sally Acorn (Sonic was there to draw attention, but Sally was there to have a show. My childhood redeemed!)

My dreams are too big for a world this small.

I desperately needed a PS3 because I desperately wanted to play MGS4, so for PS4 launch a full-on Metal Gear game by Kojima would do the trick.

WiiU - don't care

PS4 - None. I want some NEW Ip to make me go "Wow that was not possible on previous gen".

nextbox - don't care

PlayStation - Uncharted? (It's working for Vita).
Xbox - Gears Of War
Wii U - Mario

I'd pay $1000 for the Wii U to play Mario.

I'll sell you a wii u the day it comes out with a contract promising it will play some* iteration of Mario within 2 years for $999.99. What a deal!

*= more than 5

Xbox 3: Knights of the Old Republic 3.

Honestly, that's the only one I can think of. 99% of interesting games are multiplatform nowadays anyways.

WiiU - New Fire Emblem game. Maybe a prequel to PoR. Won't happen, and unnecessary, I know. However, a game with Greil as the central character... fuck yes.
Edit: The next Monolith Soft game.
Persona 5

PS4 - Nothing, as much as I may want to. Will wait for a redesign and price drop.

Xbox - Never.

WiiU: Fire Emblem, Zelda, Mario Kart
NextBox: Mass Effect 4, Lost Odyssey 2

All: Beyond Good & Evil 2, Resident Evil 6, RE2make, Deus Ex 4, Skies Of Arcadia 2 (lol)

Skies... Perhaps the one game that would make me buy any system just to play it.
or confiscate a friend's, if that's an option.

WiiU: Fire Emblem, Zelda, Mario Kart
NextBox: Mass Effect 4, Lost Odyssey 2

All: Beyond Good & Evil 2, Resident Evil 6, RE2make, Deus Ex 4, Skies Of Arcadia 2 (lol)

WiiU: A new main Residnet Evil (which si not going to happen)

720: Don't care, will buy at launch anyway

PS4: A new main Reisdent Evil (which is not going to happen anyway)

Bottom line: Only 720 at launch. ;)

Wii U: Mario from EAD Tokyo, a new F-Zero? I'll probably be there day 1 regardless
Xbox 720: PGR5 and according to rumors I'm in luck

WiiU: Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, Metroid - Any of those.

Xbox: Halo 4 with Splitscreen, more XBLA stuff, being able to buy all retail games on demand day1.

PS4: Don't know. Bought my PS3 for Last Guardian and look what I got :(

WiiU - Proper remake of Surivial Kids, not Lost in Blue. Or a new Pokémon Snap game.

PS4 - Monster Hunter

Xbox - Banjo-Kazooie platformer with the old art style.

I didn't buy any consoles last generation at launch, why wouldn't I do the same this upcoming generation given they'll likely collect even more dust?

xbox 720 - alan wake 2, pgr 5, crackdown 3, gears of war 0/4, lost odyssey 2
wii u - new wave race, pilotwings, starfox, luigis mansion sequel, pikmin 3, f-zero, new game from retro

For Wii U:

A really good new IP or a really good installment of a classic franchise. The GameCube had a brilliant launch lineup: Pikmin, Smash Bros. (sorta launch), Luigi's Mansion, and Rogue Leader. The Nintendo 64 was able to survive on a single game alone for quite some time. The 3DS had an absolutely abysmal lineup. Pilotwings Resort was literally the only thing for months that interested me and it's the sole reason why it didn't perform good for so long.

Any platform:

Mass Effect: First Contact War - If you know your Mass Effect, you know a prequel game based on Anderson's experiences in the FCW would be incredible.

Failing that...

Star Wars: Battlefront 3 - Battle Campaign spanning all 6 films, high-population MP modes, 'evolving' game modes (eg. starts as ground battle, one team is pushed back to space station, battle resumes in space).

PLEASE.

I dont buy consoles for games, I buy them on hardware.

Therefore if any of them is distinctly more powerful than the others, I'll buy it, regardless of games.

Similarly, I normally wouldn't buy Wii U regardless. However if the games demonstrate enough of a visual jump over PS360, I might buy it to "tie me over" until the "real" next gen.

However if it's within 20% or less of Ps360 in power, or if we get hard news that PS4/720 aren't far away, then pretty much nothing can get me to buy a Wii U.
This.

Um... If you're actually being serious, you are everything that is wrong with gaming. You're telling me you'd buy a console with shit games, with nothing fun to play, if it merely had "more power"? Why buy gaming consoles at all if not to play fun games?
When's the last time we had a console with only shit games?
95% of all releases are multiplatform anyway.
If visuals are important to someone, buying the most powerful console will be the best choice.
I know it is for me.

Wii U - only if Fatal Frame 2 wiimake got released for Wii U instead of Wii (or possibly if there was a Fatal Frame 5 that wasn't coming to either of the others).
PS4 - Mirror's Edge 2/BG&E2/The Outsider. In fact I'm hoping that EA/David Braben are actually aiming to have ME2/Outsider as being launch titles (BG&E2 too but I don't expect Ubisoft to have that much intelligence).
Nextbox - well they're not likely to have any big exclusive that's not some fucking shooter so fuck it, I'll just need a PS4.

I don't expect much from launch titles! Never have. That's why I'm not a day-1 buyer and have learned to wait, because I realized that launch-titles just can't be as good as later titles.

Take the Wii U for example. I think the last half year they still didn't have the final hardware specs for their development-kits, that combined with the fact that an AAA title just takes 2 or more years to make, why would I be excited for a launch game?

It would be cool if a Super Mario Galaxy 3 were a launch title, but that`s just not possible.

The only thing that would push me for that would be Shenmue III on any console. I'd even buy a Mac or a toaster if it was exclusive to that...

PS4/720 - A great new exclusive ip, Z.O.E. 3,
To be honest I hope there is no exclusive content. I'm perfectly fine with not owning any consoles, and just playing all the multiplats on my PC.

WiiU - won't be buying one of these. I hate nintendo's hardware choices. The controller looks like a waste of money. Their IP's are old and stale. I mean if they came out with a new IP that actually had a decent story and character development then perhaps that?

If I was made of money..

PS4:

Final Fantasy 15, new writers, exclusive

Wii U:

Another Metroid trilogy by Retro. Though I'm sure they are pretty done with Metroid working on Prime for so long.

No interest in the 720 or whatever the new xbox gets named.

Shenmue III is really the only game that I think might tempt me to get any of them at launch, and that's obviously not happening. Huge Nintendo fan, but I can wait for their games (still don't have a 3DS), so will wait at least 6-12 months to get Wii-U, possibly not until the first price cut. Will wait at least a year into their lives to see which console from Sony and MS will compliment the Wii-U, if either.

One game? Wii U might be able to draw me in with F-Zero if it's as good as X/GX, and if the console price is right, but that's looking unlikely.

Not sure if Microsoft or Sony could pony up a single game to make me buy their consoles on day one. Sony managed to get me on the Vita with the prospect of Ys (plus more) but I don't think they'll manage that with PS4.

PS4 - FF VII remake
WII-U/Nintendo anything - dont care about any Nintendo consoles or games, never have and never will
XBOX 720 - Also nothing of much interest, after 360 just crapping out multiple times

So it would be PS3/PS4/PC combo like it is now

In general, I don't think one game would do it. Or at least, I thought that... until Ys Celceta was announced for Vita, and suddenly I'm all over it. I guess I'm weak for certain things after all. I guess I can safely say "new Ys or Kiseki game" would get me to a platform as soon as possible.
