More often than not, concept art doesn't live up to the actual game, but they are off to a good start at least.

Really nice art!

Makes me a little sad that Killzone moved away from the WW2-inspired space opera style for more traditional sci-fi-ish.

I'd prefer a less fantastical looking take on WWI than this but it still looks good. The zeppelin's perceived importance in European history is vastly overestimated. I feel like people want a steampunk battlefield more than an accurate one (which is fine).

Sorry for the ignorance, but were parachutes used in WW1?

Air combat was very new in WW1.

At first they were just using the planes as scouting exclusively, so you would actually have Allied and Axis pilots waving to each other and greeting each other as they flew past.

Eventually they added bombs and then guns to the planes and they became combat targets from the air and ground.

I don't think they had parachutes, but maybe towards the end or after they started developing stuff like that.

Maybe the world would've been better off if there was a similar accord like in space to not weaponize the air. That would've been interesting.

the Zeppelin you got to play in the order 1886 was great so I have no doubts about this

Looks stunning, DICE is lucky to have these guys. Great at setting tone. Not long til we can hopefully see it in action!

Yes but they weren't very common. Apparently this was a decision by the RAF

“It is the opinion of the board that the presence of such an apparatus might impair the fighting spirit of pilots and cause them to abandon machines which might otherwise be capable of returning to base for repair”

but I haven't found a good source for the quote so don't take it as truth.

Dude you're not going to shoot down that plane with a handgun; Stop trying to show off.
You just have to Battlefield hard enough.

If I remember correctly(?) from a documentary someone actually did once down an enemy plane with a handgun in WW1.

What are you talking about? The very first aircraft dogfights were done with pistols and hand grenades before they invented airplane-mounted guns.

As DoublePayje said, before they started mounting weapons onto the planes itself, pilots would engage each other trying to shoot one another with pistols. Bombing runs were done throwing regular hand grenades out of the cockpits.

Also, this is Battlefield, in BF1942 you would have people riding on the wings of bombers sniping pilots in fighter crafts with rifles. :p

Does anyone know how accurate the first picture is with the parachute? I thought I'd read somewhere they didn't give pilots parachutes because they thought it would encourage cowardice and just abandoning the plane as soon as they could or something like that.

Well you learn something every day. The first guy who pulled it off must have felt pretty baller I bet.

Killzone 2 and 3 had guns with more interesting personalities than its protagonists. Which is fine in a first person shooter.

Now plaster killstreak medals in the center of the screen and orange dorito player markers all over the art to complete the vision.

I hope they keep the HUD to a minimum but I know they won't.

From that angle of the Elizabeth Tower [or Big Ben for you plebs] and Westminster Abbey shouldn't we be seeing buildings like Central Hall Westminster in the background or is that just being really picky about this concept art?

everyone loves zeppelins!

I love this one

badass shot.

Can anyone find a bigger version of this?

At first I thought he was giving a "Fuck yeah!" thumbs-up, but then I realized
he's probably supposed to be operating the bolt action to remove a spent cartridge case
:p

Na, that is not how operating a bolt action would look like. Thats a french soldier giving the thumbs up to the german zeppelin going down in flames. He looks to you, the player, with that thumbs up. Not into the barrel to see if the cartridge properly ejected. Probably story-board stuff how they show a cutscene in campagn.

DICE trims the game to feel and look as cool as any war shooter before, ww1 or not. The very first artwork with the black soldier should have been indicator enough.
