Let's talk about Final Fantasy XIII

I'm quite interested in the direction its going. It'll be the first FF that's more futuristic than fantasy if the trailer is any indication of the direction it's going. That's something that I've been looking forward to in a FF game for awhile now. And honestly, it's a refreshing change of pace from the mostly (if not purely) fantasy settings of the last 4 games.

Yeah, just because the TEAM is working on the CG doesn't mean it will be FF7:AC.

And FF7:AC CG looks outstanding, it's the movie's plot that sucks for the most part.
 
Some people still seem to be confused about this, but each game in the FFXIII project all have separate worlds, characters and storylines. The only thing they share is a common theme/mythos. Look, from the horse's mouth:

That's debatable.

I mean, if the requirements are 90 minutes long, and a show down with Cloud and Sephiroth with conclusion, as well as cameo of all the old characters...

how many other ways can you play it?

There's little doubt as to the intent of the movie; it's fanservice for fans, an update for fans of the original to see their favourite characters and world again. In that sense, FF7AC was exceedingly well done.

Also the plot wasn't actually half bad, but they did a poor job of conveying it, but oh well!
 
I really don't think I will mind the art direction and sci-fi type world. I even like the fact that they are going with a girl lead. I really haven't cared for the character art for the last few FFs, so meh.

But I gotta say I am appalled by the spin off announcement. After playing DoC at TGS I am promising myself never to touch any other spin-off that they produce. It just sickens me, and I wish they would put that money and development into other franchises.

Oh and Next-Gen RPGs start with Ryu Ga Gotoku 2....Or Wii Mario RPG.

Did you like Kingdom Hearts 2? If so then there's your answer. Don't compare what they did in a movie when this is a game and you have an example of a game they've made that's a high quality game. I'd think it makes more sense to look at the game as an example of what they can do in another game than a movie.

Apart from upsetting crazy people like yourself, why would releasing additional games to flesh out the universe be a bad thing??

You do realise that development costs are rising; this is one of the better ways of making that return on investment.

Actually if you watch the trailer it really does. It has the same sort of "magical" feel, the same twisty rollercoastery narrow path through it. The similarity jumped out at me IMMEDIATELY when i saw it.

Yeah. I'd agree that even FFX is fantasy to an extent, even if a lot of people act more modernized and down down to earth, they're also kind of back to the simple life.

btw, in one of my previous posts I made an unintentional comparison of FFVIII and X and I edited it out, though they still are both more "modern" (even if FFX has a weird feel to it, it's in a post-modern setting) than really gloomy, futuristic FF's like VI, VII and XIII.
 
I'm really looking foward to it personally and I think the art is far from generic. Then again I always look foward to every FF game.

It's FF! Everything is going to have a "magical" feel to it to an extent, it's just how they apply the setting and such that dictates how that all fits into the game. FFVII had a couple places you could write off as being non-futuristic or whatever, but overall it was pretty futuristic. And by the looks of FFXIII it will be the same.

So because they have confidence that their fans will like this, and preempt the demand by supplying it, it's a bad thing?

You also continue to ignore the different gameplay genres comment, as well as the fact the other game is actually on mobile phones, an entirely different market and platform, one that unless you're in japan won't even be able to access.

If they make a fighting game, the traditional FF RPG, a DMC style action game, and a dating game, you're saying they shouldn't have bothered with any of them but the FF RPG, even though the rest could've been potentially really good games, and the setting could've been really suitable for all those games.
 
I, along with many others, think FFXIII looks fantastic. I've been playing the series since the first one on the NES, and while I adore the hard fantasy theme it's held in the past (FFIV is my favorite), I don't fear change.

I don't see any point in trying to discuss Final Fantasy's direction with Himuro. It's clear that we was date raped by Nomura...

looks pretty cool. Music isn't bad either. But after watching it a second time, with all the flipping and double gun shooting it reminds me of FFX-2, a game I didn't care for. But then again since this game is original and not a sequel maybe it'll be better.

I'm indifferent to Nomura. I did like his work in VII a lot, though. But outside of that, I'm not crazy about anything he's done, nor am I let down.
 
I'm mostly pissed that Square's E3 was all FF and there was no mention of Ogre Battle: In the Lap of the Gods. that game better be in development and it'd better be coming out! otherwise I will murder as many "character designers" for FF as I can!
 
The main problem with announcing a billion spin offs is that its further proof that Square is hesitant to take risks. Risks are what lead to Chrono Trigger, Xenogears and Vagrant Story. Now they seem to be going down the "safer" path, one that mainstreamers will gladly follow. But for those of us fans who've seen better days, this kind of thing is pretty disheartening. I also feel like they need to ease up a little on graphics and focus on gameplay. FF12 seems to be the best of both worlds, but Kingdom Hearts 2 was not a lot of fun to play. Here's hoping to a Square revival!

big budget risks going into next gen is something you seem to have forgotten. We're not 32 bit anymore.
 
PolyGone: But like I said before, this is their very first step into PS3 territory. We can expect more from the Square side. What that will be, who knows. But I doubt you will see FF13, the spinoffs, then nothing else until FF14.

I understand your concerns, but you've been mostly incomprehensible in your explanations.

What can we do as Square fans? they're Square Enix now... some parts the same, some parts changed.

I'd love to see Bushido Blade 3, but this isn't the thread for it. You obviously didn't make this thread to wax lyrical about the opportunity cost of FF games, and how its stopping them from making other great games.

I'm just saying that they've got games that you could base your decision on which is better than basing them on a movie. Even if the story in FFvs13 isn't to your liking the gameplay will likely be good. Nomura has shown himself to be a pretty good game director.

Main character an Old Man. there hasn't been a main character that's old in a FF. in fact I don't think there's ever been an old man for a main character in a rpg.

Setting: something like LOTR. no futuristic stuff, but a lot of cool fantasy elements.

think Square have taken a step back towards the crap that was X-2.

We haven't had a high science fiction style FF for a while now. FF for the longest time been at its heart a series that combines Sci-fi and fantasy, as well as a whole bunch of other FF elements (chocobos, mogs, names of spells, saving the world theme, etc).



That said, I have the idea on how to pull off science fiction and medieval fantasy extremely well in the same game.
 
I think the medieval stuff ... they can easily leave to their Mana franchises.. and other stuff.

When FFIX showed up with its absolute fantasy.. I was like WTF... where's the good shit? They completely tossed the future.

That said, HIMURO, here are a few shots .. with tech. But then who's to know what the rest of the game world is like. You're faulting a trailer... :S for its content.

Personally I haven't played an FF since 10 and that was some time ago. I think, IIRC that is, that I enjoyed that game.

For me, the main problem is when they focus on graphics instead of story, character development, and gameplay. Make a game with a good story. Also, just because FF is your main series, don't churn out crap sequels to games that showed promise (Musashi). Also, stop making sequels to games that don't show promise (SaGa). Nomura should stick to what he does best, character designs, but let the other ones have a shot too. Diversity is the spice of life, too much Nomura starts to get stale even if it is really good. Last but not least, go multiplatform. This will equal more money, therefore more resources and less of a need to bank on the cheesy spin-offs.

Me either. But to me, seeing as it's the very first video we've gotten, I don't speculate the entire game will be "flashy" like that. Maybe just some parts. And unlike you, I despised FFX-2 (well, everything but the gameplay, and I guess that's what counts) so I don't want to see that kind of bullshit plastered on an FF title. :)

So because you got to see 2 minutes of the game, you're already making assumptions on how the game is going to be?

Are you doubting that FFXIII will have all the prerequisite drama and story that comes from these FF games?

Maybe you'll end up remaining disappointed, but seeing how we've only seen a incredibly brief trailer meant to be flashy and get people's attention during a press conference, thingsmay change. But, in the end, maybe you won't be happy, maybe FF is no longer for you. You've got the SMT series to keep you happy.

I agree and understand your vantage point. It's okay to "assume" things based on trailers. But Final Fantasy games are long, and whether or not the entire game will be like that, who's to know. Just be optimistic. :)

The complaint against over the top action is little ridiculous considering this is FInal Fnatasy. That shit didn't start with Advent Children. It started when you gained the ability to summon an ifrit.

It really did have an excellent battle and character system. A little slow perhaps, but the depth of weaponskills and magic bursts was truly special.

Ok, maybe not, 1,500 hour special, but it was damn good. :p
 
I hope they don't pull that over the top action crap like they did in Advent Children if they do which the trailer kinda hint at that they'll do it. Sales - 1
 
1. FF XIII itself seems fine. I likely hate X-2, anything that is very serious being "Matrix-ized", etc more than almost anyone here. Absolutely abhor it. But I don't get that vibe from XIII. Additionally I like the military vibe I get from the movie based on the train ambush and the blockade they placed on the track.

2. Fabula Asdf Crystallis or whatever is something I'm fine with too. I don't expect to love Versus XIII but what Square Enix is doing smart from a business perspective and it doesn't bother me in any way. It won't hurt XIII itself so the worst case scenario is that the other two games are irrelevant to me.
 
I can't wait for Atlus to reveal SMT4 with a fuck awesome art direction and next gen cel-shading :)
 
I think the 2 pre-baked spinoffs are absolutely revolting, but I doubt Square will screw up their flagship series and release a subpar product. See: FF12. Mixing up the battle system is good for them, at this point.
