It was five years ago today Nintendo flipped the switch and changed the Revolution's name to "Wii." Here's the hilarious obligatory GAF thread link. Here's the short video Nintendo of America released that day showing the logo "in action."

So, let's talk about the name. What's in a name? 86 million consoles and uncountable urine jokes later, could the Wii have been as successful with a different name? More successful? In the end, was it a good name for what it was trying to convey?

I think it worked. They managed to give it its own face, feel and it was part of a coherent total package of family friendlyness that got them in the right market segment.

Ofcourse it's a good name, marketingwise. It's short, easy to remember and got people talking about it.

The two men saying "Wii would like to play" in commercials probably helped out. It simply made sense hearing it.

I think revolution would've been 'cool' for a year. Wii sticks in your mind.

I still think it's stupid, and that Revolution is the best console name ever, and actually describes the console. But Nintendo was clearly right.

Nintendo Puu next.

The whole "We would like to play" thing? Then yeah, they nailed it.

I still think it's a dumb name though.

Wii Branding is a success. I know revionists will want to say it was a mixed bag, but there's zero doubt that it achieved great success, both in the amount of consoles it helped sell and the fact that on the surface the the name seemed ridiculous. But it's catchy and it got people to remember it.

I doubt casuals could remember Atari 2600 or the Nintendo Entertainment System, both of which were shortened to Atari/Nintendo.

Note that Nintendo hired the same firm that gave us ACURA, among other brands.

It resulted in one of the greatest Nintendo commercials of all time:

I do admit I think Revolution would have been badass though. In the brief period of time between the controller and name reveals the term "Revmote" sounded pretty cool.

EDIT: Oh man, watching that commercial again it's funny how stereotyped it is: suburban families play the casual and minigame titles, hip apartment dudes play the hardcore action/shooters, and the country guys play the sports games.

Revolution >>>> Wii

I don't think a different name would have made the system sell any less or more but I still hate the Wii name.

I think the name was great. It embodies what the system was aiming for, local Multiplayer Game play and a system the whole family can enjoy, and is a short, easy to remember name that is unlikely to be confused. I don't think the system would have sold better with a different name, and a worse name could of impacted sales.

The Wii was a very strange name from the start, but I grew to know and love it. And then I gave Nintendo my money lol.

Pretty much my opinion.

Visually, it worked/works great. Part of one of the most phenomenal branding campaigns in industry history.

Saying it out loud, though, it still sounds ridiculous to me.

Seeing that thread again brings abck SO many memories.

And yes, the name is awesome, Nintendo built a strong brand with this one. If they don't name the sucessor somthing similiar though I hope they are doing something simple like just Nintendo or so for it.

It was a meaningless nonsense buzzword that carried no previous baggage.. I see the marketing wisdom in it now. It means nothing, so therefore it can mean anything that Nintendo moulds it into.

I think it would have worked just as well with any other random buzzword... But it would have done worse with a name that carries connotations.

For example "Revolution"? Your grandma wasn't part of the previous incarnation of gaming, a turbo charged 'revolution' might be intimItating. A "Wii" however is nothing. It's brand new.. An easy jumping on point for newbies.

Good post. Pretty much right on the money. Although I think people confuse "being embarrassed" with being "self-aware." When you say "I wanna buy the Nintendo Wii" - whatever the connotation - you sound like a huge douchenozzle. That's because it sounds fucking retarded. Either way, will that stop me from buying it? Of course not. But I highly doubt I am the important factor when it comes to the success of "Wii." No, Nintendo's goal is a far reaching audience... to which this name is entirely counterproductive. It is NOT evocative of any of the features that Revolution is serving to bring, it has to be explained to be understood, and it sounds stupid to even say. There's about a billion marketing no-no's in here, but somehow there are people defending it.

Because GAF teaches you, someone will defend anything.

The toll this plays on perception is much larger than a small group of hardcore gamers. I don't care who you are, first impressions are important... if that happens to be that you're thinking 'wow, this is the worst name ever conceived for a console'... then you're off to a bad start.

And that is precisely what Nintendo has done. It doesn't matter what the marketing is, because as long as it includes lots of repeating of the words "WE WE WE WE", it's always going to SOUND silly. The logo may look passable, but people don't say a logo.

*golf clap* Almost as profoundly hyperbolic as your FF13 post Amirox.

It worked. Laughter died down and it became a meaningless word you instantly associated with Nintendo. Wonder why they chose a word that needed the extra work at launch over some other alternatives.

A bit off topic, but it seems Nintendo is re-releasing some Wii games at discounted prices.
Zelda:TP, Mario Sluggers and Wii Sports are all being sold for like $20 under the Nintendo Select brand.

Well it's almost midnight, and I'm still baffled not only by Nintendo's illogal decision, but also the people willing to defend it. But then again, I know fanboys who think the Virtual Boy is a better handheld than the PSP.

Naming your home console after an incorrectly spelled word such as "we" doesn't seem like the best idea, and I can only imagine the kinds of mushrooms people must have been taking to concoct such a decision. I don't think the average casual gamer is going to respond to this in a positive manner; instead, I can see them laughing this off.

Nintendo gained a lot of momentum with the unveiling of Red Steel, only to follow that up with this emense PR disaster. All of Perrin Kaplan's Jedi powers will not be able to pursuade people that this is a "cool" name, or a good one. It's especially sad when you consider how childish "Wii" really sounds. The Gamecube suffered from being labeled as the "kiddie" console of the previous generation, and it never recovered from the purple lunchbox image. By naming their console after a "universal" word that sounds more like a universal body function, Nintendo has once again cornered themselves. Obviously the games are more important to a console than its name, but public perception is extremely important. Nintendo has constantly dropped the ball with respect to marketing, and this is just another sad turn of events in that regard.

Can't get enough of this crow.

Anecdote:

I was walking to work when I overheard two men talking about the Wii.

After a while I realized they were French.

I actually like it alot. Short, iconic and gets people talking.

Glad they didnt name it Revolution. God that is a fucking horrible name for a system in so many ways.

It proved that the actual name of a product doesn't matter if marketed right. People quickly stop thinking about what the actual name is and just associate it with the product.

Pretty much.

I bet 90% of the people who hated the name then still hate it now. It's a bad name, It's a miracle that nintendo manged to market their way out of the hole they put themselves in when they chose it. There is no defending such a horrific choice. I don't care how much they sold.

They built a brand. It was an amazing success and the name was a part of it.

Which makes it so weird that they are abandoning it most likely. Mysterious.

I hate the name, though I'm numb to its stupidity now. It's just an ugly word, makes the product sound cheap. I have no fucking idea what kind of effect it's had on the success of the machine, consumers consistently confuse the fuck out of me.

I believe that "Wii" will eventually go down as one of the biggest blunders in marketing history. This has nothing to do with the hardcore or the casual audience. "Wii" as a name is seen as a noun, not a pronoun. The automatic association of the word "Wii" is of negative ones (small, urine, penis, whichever you prefer) in the English language. It's not because it's immature to think that. There are no other meanings in that context.

This is the EXACT equivalent (eerily so) to Ford launching a car infamously known as the "Pinto" in Brazil (which meant small male sex organ). They got roasted for it, and rightfully so.

If Nintendo wants to branch out and call it a name that has nothing to do with game consoles, I applaud and encourage that. But it HAS to be more memorable, more prouncable, and free of negative stigma.
