Random cool stuff from the last page (having to choose 10 sucks, check the previous page for a ton more pls, new game reveals or progress/media from yet unreleased stuff, old games updated, mods for non-VR games, all the good stuff):

Cool, totally missed there's a VR mod for Receiver, it sucked to see Receiver 2 wasn't gonna be for VR...

Just bought a barely used Rift S last week. So far I've picked up Asura's Wrath, Pavlov, and Blade and Sorcery. Probably played Pavlov the most, very well done even if arcadey. Really wanted to like VTOL but I'm not a big fan of the virtual hotas thing. I have a Warthog so I'm disappointed that it's not supported, would be dope as FUCK if it was.

Also been checking out the porn with SexLikeReal being a standout app. Anyone have a premium sub for that? If so, what do you think?

Sweet, I didn't know Rift S connects to PS3/X360 to play games like Asura's Wrath (that'd be a crazy VR sequel if it ever got one) :messenger_winking_tongue:

Better refund VTOL VR if you don't care to stick with its style, I don't think hotas support is planned, its whole point is the interactive cockpits.

There are sims that support VR like DCS and IL-2 Sturmovik. War Thunder does too but it was fiddly last I tried. Non-flight sims as well, current SCS games support VR unofficially in their beta branches.

Let me dig up my recommendations list. Onward is what you may want btw, if Pavlov is VR Counter-Strike then Contractors is VR Call of Duty and Onward is VR Ghost Recon (of old). Obviously depending on what you like:

TWD: Saints & Sinners is a sweet immersive sim-lite with great action and decent resource management.

Budget Cuts is a stealth puzzle adventure with nicely integrated teleport mechanics and a new sequel.

Apex Construct is a sci fi action adventure game with archery systems at its core.

Stormland is an open world shooter, more limited than it seems at first but still fun as hell.

The Thrill of the Fight is a boxing sim, if less fancy than the gamey Creed and its Rocky license.

Journey of the Gods is a Zelda-lite linear action adventure that's simple but polished and works really well.

Pistol Whip is the new kid on the rhythm game block, I love it like it’s a funky musical Virtua Cop-like.

Drop Dead is a fun riff on The House of the Dead, not nearly as tight but maybe the best of the genre in VR.

In Death is an archery based rogue-lite I spent many hours in early on despite the limited scope.

SUPERHOT VR is a puzzle action shooter with cool slow motion mechanics. Be like Neo!

Racket Fury is a very polished table tennis game, the realism was surreal at first despite the sci fi.

Catch & Release is a fishing game. Who doesn’t like fishing? I want Twilight Princess fishing in VR now.

Moss is a third person action adventure, you lead a sword wielding mouse as if in a diorama of a fairy tale.

Space Junkies is a PVP zero gravity arena FPS, like Quake in space, great for some instant action.

Ultrawings is a flight game, not quite a sim, maybe a bit like pilot wings, goals and stuff to get through. Edit: this seems to support physical joysticks too btw, but may require some tinkering and unconventional behavior like disconnecting all other controllers going by some forum threads.

Windlands 2 is an action adventure with not-web-swinging and archery, it’s also co-op capable.

Vox Machinae is a PVP mech combat game with awesome cockpits, there are some co-op elements too. Edit: this one does support physical joysticks too btw, but try it without first, it doesn't need precision maneuvers like flight sims and the headtracked aiming of weapons systems is precise.

Raw Data is probably the best of the arena/wave shooters with different classes, progression & co-op.

Onward is my favorite “standard” FPS, PVP focused, some co-op & the best feel for weapons/gadgets.

Lone Echo is a must play astronaut adventure, the free PVP Echo VR and its $10 Combat DLC rock too.

Red Matter is another sci fi adventure with a different spin than the above and great interactions.

Blade & Sorcery has the best physics based melee combat but doesn’t yet have progression etc.

There are many great early access games, I like where Vengeful Rites is going as a VR RPG action adventure, sword wielding, spell casting, the works and there’s also the free-for-now A Township Tale alpha to try for some online rpging/surviving/crafting. VTOL VR is a great indie combat flight sim with wonderfully interactive cockpits (I get it, it's not for you, I'm copy pasting my list). There are also ports of non-VR games or games that are both for VR and for regular play, which are done very well, as long as you like the base games. Titles like Skyrim VR, Elite Dangerous, DiRT Rally, No Man’s Sky, PayDay 2 and others were converted very well. Some like Fallout 4 VR weren’t as successful however so some caution is necessary before purchase. Others have been converted by fan modifications, MotherVR is a great mod for Alien Isolation, without hand tracking, while the same creator is working on ReclaimerVR, a mod for Halo: The Master Chief Collection that will include that and another guy works on an Outer Wilds mod with hand tracking as well, it's looking pretty sweet though concessions are always made for such things and certain functions.

Also, personally I refunded Asgard's Wrath, combat & stuff never clicked for me, I was lucky I accidentally closed it before I passed the 2-hour mark so I jumped on the opportunity. Sure, people say it gets a lot better and what not but if the basics don't click for you either, I suggest doing that too.

If money isn't an object, is the best VR set currently the Index? Also, if I wanted to get the best money to feature value, what are we looking at?

I want to decide how far into PC VR I want to go right now. I'm torn between going for the best that's currently available for Alyx, or waiting until the next revision of hardware.

Yes, unless you want to go down the rabbit hole of mixing and matching different lighthouse tracking compatible sets and getting something like a super premium Pimax (but their high res/high fov can have issues too) or Vive Pro alongside Index controllers. Otherwise, Index is the premium offering, but may also be the best in price/quality because it really is a premium product, not overpriced, Oculus Rift S has great price/quality ratio itself for less than half the price and formerly premium now discounted WMR kits like Samsung Odyssey are if you're on a really low budget but really want to jump in VR now. If you also care for stand-alone non-PC VR portable capabilities on top of PC connectivity then replace Rift S with the Quest which is roughly equivalent but sacrifices comfort and has even lower hz screen (but has a physical ipd switch over S). If you want to wait it will be long, Vive Cosmos was a lemon and Rift S and Index are still new, revisions will take a long while.

My only “complaints” about Index:

Not OLED, so blacks could be better. But they aren’t bad
Not portable, so some setup is required to move around (e.g. I want to move it to a bigger room for HL Alyx, it’s not as simple as strapping that thing to my dome and drawing new room boundaries). This isn’t really a drawback for someone who wants mid-high end VR though, Quest is pretty low performance.

OTOH, lighthouse 2.0 tracking and the refresh rate are top tier and I like the controllers the best out of any I’ve used

Alexios

Good luck because everything on the higher end is back ordered to hell and back depending on the region (though Valve did say they hope to make Index available again before Alyx releases) and things are expected to get worse for some of them (or just Quest due to its chipset and stuff?) too due to the disaster in China :(

This looks potentially interesting (though those melee kills look eh), it released first on the Oculus Store in early access and has a (very) few positive reviews there (who knows if they're your usual shills though) likening it to an indie solo Call of Duty: Zombies type of experience:

I knew it. When I first saw the ending to Pixel Ripped 1989 my first thought was: "Clever! This is a survey so we can choose the next game's time period."

I chose 1995 in hopes of seeing it do PlayStation era polygonal games, but I'm glad it's still sprite-based late 16-bit era in retrospect.

I’ve only really played NMS in VR, which is superb but I haven’t played in a while so thought I’d have a look around. As luck would have it, there’s a VR Humble Bundle.

Been playing a bit of Gorn. Fucking brutal! I found where it’s been a while I need to build up my tolerance again though, was feeling a bit of sickness.

IMO the Index is far from being the best in price / performance.

The rift s is like 85% of the index while being 35% of the price.

The index has the better refresh rate and the better resolution - but also a tiny sweetspot. That means, that the sharpness decreases much from the center to the edge.

IMO the rift s has the biggest sweetspot right now and shows the least amount of light rays.

The controllers of the rift s are much more comfortable to me than the index ones.

The thing is, its not like the index does everything better than the rift and it is nearly three times more expensive - in my opinion that is far from being reasonable. It is a device for enthusiasts, but even then it is not the best in every regard.

The index has two big advantages IMO: fov and refresh rate. But it also has a few disadvantages compared to the rift s.

Give facebook money?! NEVER! :p

IPD adjustment and being able to put the lenses right up to your eyeballs (which you really should) alleviate most of the issues other people seem to have with the Index.

I think you’re right about the sweet spot for price/performance being the Rift S, but you totally missed the lighthouse and hand tracking being way better than what the Rift offers...and the 3x the price thing is a bit exaggerated. But for most people the Rift S or even the Quest is totally fine.

People do notice a huge difference when going from one to the other though. My friends are super happy with their quest, and have put on my Index immediately after and it’s way more comfortable and has way better tracking

Quest doesn't match the S either, it has its own pros & cons. It's roughly equivalent but the even lower than the less than optimal hz of the S and the comfort factor can't be understated, it's all up to one's preferences and needs, if they prefer the stand alone capabilities over that + native PC mode.

Also the physical ipd switch which it has in common with Index but not the S.

Well the quest is totally different, very uncomfortable to me as well. Weird weight distribution.

The tracking is a bit better, yes. But it is also a disadvantage, because you need the stationary lighthouse stations in your room. And having a htc vive, I know how often I had to recalibrate. Same for the cv1. Even the cv1 had - when set up correctly - a bit better tracking. With the rift s it doesn't matter in which room I play, it is just so easy to set up. I will happily do without the lighthouse tracking while being able to switch rooms in our house. The difference is not that big IMO.

And if your ipd is too far off, the experience will be worse. I hope they add the feature for the next model again. My ipd is perfect for the rift though, so no problems on my end.

I also set it up correctly for the index, the sweet spot is objectively smaller, not just for me. But not on a ridiculous level like the vive cosmos, just a bit worse than the rift s. The index has a great fov, makes it a bit harder I guess.

I had the index for 5 months, I just sold it because my wife played mostly with the rift and I want to try the pimax 5k plus for racing simulations (neither the rift s nor the index are great for that because of their resolution).

I can also understand that ppl don't want to support Facebook.

I don't want to shit on the index, it is a great addition to the market and a really good vr experience. As a sucker for display refresh rates, I really loved the higher refresh rate (there is a reason why I havr 240Hz on my gaming monitor) and I am happy that valve is trying to unite the different headsets in steam.

It is just not the best in price / performance.

Pavlov is about to have some major updates

Ww2 update, weapons, UI, maps, vehicle's (in future update)

Community is in the polishing stages of adding rush game mode with 32 players (test with 48 and turns fine, 32 for balance)

If you havent seen it either, another community member has made a r6 destruction mod

Again I think you're right about price/performance, but it's still the best from an actual performance standpoint. It's not portable in terms of needing the lighthouses set up, but if you're talking Rift S or anything other than a Quest, then you need a PC or console anyway, so the extra step of putting lighthouses up isn't really that big of a deal...I've not moved my setup in the last 7 months or so that I've had it, just like I haven't moved my PS4 from the TV it's been hooked up to since we moved into our house. It's about the same as having a Wii and the "sensor" bar connected to it. And I haven't had to recalibrate anything in months. My one issue, which seems to be common in all first revision knuckles controllers, is the stick click thing...and I only now just did something about it because HL: Alyx is coming next month and Valve is sending me two brand new controllers.

No, don't buy an Index if you can't afford it or high refresh rate/IPD adjust/FOV/tracking isn't the priority. But do get it if you want the best experience and have a rig that can power it, IMO.

Rift s is awesome for the price, controllers fine great, I invested in a pulley system, so wires aren't even an issue

I can't see the index being.worth the extra £400 tbh.

Coming from psvr, rift s is a massive upgrade and worth every penny

400 pounds more in GB? Thats much better than in germany.

The Index costs 1079€ here, the rift s is 399€ (399$ afaik in the US) if you can wait a few weeks, there are shortages atm because of HL Alyx (and prob china?) but I even got it on sale for 365€ 3 months ago.

For me, it was 700€ more. Thats why I sold it. Once I had the Rift S, I thought it is just not worth the upgrade for me atm. It is not a bad offer compared to the vive cosmos though.

The good thing: I sold it used for over 1000€, because there was such a high demand.

Thanks for this. I’m about to go from PSVR to Rift S myself. Keen to hear anything about what I can expect upgrade-wise.

Anything u wanna know?

I understand that Im going to notice a sharpness increase, is it fairly mild or quite a notable jump?

Have you had any tracking issues with the Rift S? I was plagued with them on PSVR

And finally, how is it feeling IPD-wise? I'm 60.5mm which is at the lower end of the range.

Thanks very much for the info 😁

Yes pull notice instantly, I found psvr blurry as fuck. Moving to rift s, is like going for PS2 gfxs, to PS3, I get no blurring at all, the focus sweet spot is huge on rift s as well, on psvr I had to move the headset up and down to even make it usable. And remember you can up the supersampling on rift s, I have a beefy pc so can run at 200% super sampling. Visually there's no comparison. Take firewall, I found it impossible to see anything clear past like 20m, on rift s I can play something like onward, and pick out people over 100m away.
Obviously depends on your pc specs

I don't get any tracking issues, unless I out the controllers right up to my face, and that's not a normal thing to do, only I might get tracking issues is when they're behind your back, but again, that's a rare action to do, it's night and day to psvr, no drifting like psvr.

Rift IPD goes down to 53, honestly the sweet spot is so large, you can leave on default and (63) and have 0 issues

I had a hell of a time with headset drift on PSVR, it'll be nice to not have to deal with that again.

Now, to find one of these things in stock!

HTC to offer more expensive yet less competitive consumer products. The lighthouse based Elite uses the same old wands, the others are the current Cosmos, the Play with less cameras for the tracking (and still no sign of fixes for it) and the XR with more front facing cameras for AR/MR. Meh.

For reference on performance my rig

3700x
2080 super
32gig 3600mhz

You'll be able do 140% SS I reckon

And good luck finding a rift s ATM. Might be worth get the VR humble bundle now, so you don't miss the deal

I doubt this thing will go anywhere like most fan projects ever but here goes, just in case I guess, haha ^

I'm not sure about this, it seems well made but it has a lot to prove to live up to the better wave shooters like Raw Data and Sairento even if people care to try something of such limited scope now that we have much deeper VR games to choose from. The price seems fairly reasonable at least...
Mental came out too, it looks just as crazy as Holoception, hopefully it's fun. Parkouring can be interesting if it's intuitive...

Kind of a wasted opportunity with that third person stuff but oh well, it could be good I guess, we'll see...

Boneworks out now on the Oculus store, presumably with the latest patch improving some of its flaws... It even has this new map, to be added to Steam next month.

V-Racer Hoverbike seems to be chugging along nicely, it's a cool futuristic racer worth checking out :)

Is a pulley system a seriously good investment? I have a Rift S that I love to bits, but the wire does get a little annoying from time-to-time. My biggest thing is that I don't want to drill any holes in the roof either, so hopefully they'd make ones that are adhesive instead.

For the raw price to performance I couldn't be any happier with the Rift S, I'm going to have to do some modding for it though. Using any headset with glasses on is a huge pain in the ass so I'm picking up those prescription lens inserts you can use. I've been debating picking up one of the Vive Deluxe Audio Straps too and using one of the many modding solutions people have come up with to replace my Rift S's headband.
