Lies of P |OT| Woodborn

For people playing, is the game worth 60 dollars?
Absolutely. It is a fantastic action game with the best production values in years.

as far as 'souls likes' go this is probably the best of the various attempts companies have made but it's still wayyyyyyy off the Fromsoft feel. Combat is floaty, enemies don't seem to have much reaction to your attacks. It's strange because if I was making a souls rip off I would start with the thing that makes the souls games feel so good - the tight combat.
Gameplay in this game is very competent and you are greatly overexaggerating. Thymesia went with your approach, but despite quality gameplay everything else came up short and it is hard to go back to. The world of this game is so beautiful and captivating that many are sure to keep coming back. That to me is preferable.

competent indeed, but way off Fromsoft quality. But then again 95% games are way off that too.

I think you read my post a bit too in depth. As far as games go this is far from bad, it's just not much of a step up from all the other souls likes. For me at least

You gotta be guzzling Miyazaki balls throat deep to think this isn’t on par with fromsoftware work so far from what I’ve played.

Like if you hid who the dev/publisher is from the player and had them play this it handles exactly like a FS title through and through. They didn’t miss a single aspect.

-Interconnected world/levels with shortcuts
-Deep atmosphere
-Tight AF combat with all the bells and whistles. Including enemy feedback, hitting walls reactions, and more.
-Fun upgrade systems for customization options
-Difficulty stems from learning patterns
-Fantastic “hidden side quests” with improvements to Souls formula to find the person to turn it into once you complete it .
- Doll like maiden? Check
- Light soundtrack that fleshes out atmosphere

Oh and to boot the game runs at 120+ fps always on 4k max settings dlss quality on a 3080. Game is a looker.

Best impulse buy of the year !

12 hours in now, I continue to be impressed. Found 2 secrets related to gestures, couple of sidequests that required creative use of items, NPC that uses boss "Souls" to create special weapons/amulets, "black market" NPC and a whole lot more! Last 2 bosses I killed on my 1st attempt, factory boss only took 2 attempts, pretty smooth sailing so far.

The presentation in this game is second to none, devs absolutely nailed this world of automatons run amok with it's Stalkers and Sweepers, Bluebloods and Puppets. The narrative, characters and world building are one of the things I love most about it, I'm already envisioning the potential for a sequel and how much grander it can all be built on this solid foundation.

I'd like to clarify the importance/necessity of Perfect Guard. I've read a couple of reviews that said you *must* master it in order to progress through this game. Put simply -at least so far- that is not true. I've relied on dodge much more than guard and to great effect. Indeed, there are multiple skills in the skill tree that specifically augment/boost dodge so clearly it's a viable option. Not to say that Perfect Guard isn't badass and powerful, it is and I love pulling it off. But if anyone is on the fence because of this mechanic don't be.

Each new level has continued to introduce multiple new enemy types, the combat continues to feel great with more and more options/mechanics introduced as you progress. The game has quickly shot up into my top 5 of 2023 and I've played *a lot* this year, let's see where the chips fall when it's all said and done. Note to PlayStation: buy these devs!

Edit: forgot to add, don't underestimate throwables (these items have their own stat scaling!). I almost never use these in Souls games but here they can make a huge difference here, especially in boss fights 👌

Is it true that the combat is very parry heavy against bosses? Like you can't beat them if you don't have the parry timing down to a t.

(Maybe not for the first couple of bosses, but this seem the common sentiment for the advanced ones)

Can't i just play like bloodborne with only evade moves?

Read my above post ⬆️, the answer is yes after 16 hours of play, on chapter 8 atm, I've beaten most bosses on my 1st attempt primarily relying on dodge and I haven't even invested into the skills that improve dodge. Having said that there is no reason to not try to master Perfect Guard, it's a powerful tool.

I mostly kinda hate parry based combat systems, if i can go away with blocks and evasion it is better for me.

So did they end up improving the dodge mechanic like they said they would after seeing the demo feedback? Really interested to know how it is now.

how "souls like" is this game? It looks fun but I HATE souls games (except remenant), if I die how far back do I have to go?

20 hours in, game continues to fire on all cylinders. Finally reached the point where you can respec XP/refund Quartz and Calibers. Narrative is so damn good. Combat is so damn good. Music is so damn good. World-building is so damn good. If it continues like this until the end I'm thinking it will officially be my favourite non-FROM Souls-like and I've played a whole bunch, it's just that good.

I'm genuinely impressed with what these devs have done and it bears repeating that the game is flawless from a technical perspective, no bugs, no frame drops, no crashes, everything just runs perfectly on my PS5 in Performance mode and it looks beautiful on my OLED TV. What a year 2023 has been for gaming, God damn.

Played it for an hour, killed the first boss and got to the hotel krat; good game, though it starts off pretty reserved, I'm used to souls games being more brutal from the get go.

Yeah, this is such a massive Bloodborne rip off, I wouldn’t be surprised if FromSoft take some sort of legal action 🤣

Having said that… it’s really fucking good. Probably the best soulslike there’s been. Just all feels really good.

It’s dragged me off Starfield, and is an absolutely brilliant get for GamePass.

At least these guys know how to properly develop a game not full of shit shader and traversal stutters.

It remains the biggest travesty in gaming that Bloodborne is the state it’s in.

Man Elden Ring was/is so bad on PC I got to the starting area saw my game forcefully capped at 60fps, started walking towards the knight, saw all the stuttering and turned that shit off. I'm tired of From being excused for the shoddy performance in their games. They had made plenty of money before Elden Ring and still opted to use that shitty engine. Their own in house engine that they arent even good at using. No more excuses.

I played this for an hour, and it runs very well. Had only one frame spike, during this time.
The game starts with a 30 second shader compilation. But then it's extremely smooth.
Everything maxed out, FSR2.2 at Quality. And a constant 144 fps.
It's not the best looking game of the year, but it's very good. And it's very well optimized.

Their hint at the next project at 1 of the end of the post screen credit blows my mind. I had the stream on in the background and didn't mean to see the spoiler, but I think people will be hyped if they are even a small fan of this classic movie. I'll just leave it at that

Will they make a huge Dark Fairy Tales merged verse with that Paracelsus and Dorothy cutscene? I hope so, but there is the chance of Pinocchio actually becoming the Tin Can and being just part of a bigger role in what could be centered around the Oz universe. However, we did get Victor (Frankenstein) as a boss earlier, and there are clues to other stories as well.

I'm so hyped about it. Imagine Alice in Wonderland or anything from the Grimm Brothers as well. I can't wait to see what they are cooking up.

Everything got nerfed to shit. I was getting my ass beat by the donkey dude to a pulp for over an hour in the demo and barely managed to kill the demo end boss once, I just passed that poiny and I haven’t died yet. I think they also extended the parry window. And honestly I dob’t feel like thats a bad thing, the demo felt a bit too hard while this is just as enjoyable imo

I'm fine with it not being super punishing. I mostly just want to enjoy the game and see the cool art design.

If a developer can't nail the game balance, it's best to lean more towards easy than to make it unplayable. Or just have multiple difficulties.

Yeah, this is fucking awesome. The first boss is weighted perfectly. Just hard enough to make you think about what you’re doing, and time your dodges and attacks properly… but not too hard to make you bounce off it. They’ve managed to ape FromSoft really well.

I just played 3 hours of it on gamepass.

The combat could be a little better, but overall I enjoyed it a lot. The graphics are great and I didn't get frame drops on the Series S. I am seriously considering buying it on the ps5 just to support the devs.

The art style is awesome, the weapons system is unique and the story is holding my interest.

I can't wait to play it more later.

Quick tip…I’m still early on in the game at the factory area where I picked up the Booster Glave weapon. It looks nice but scales with dex and since I’m playing as a strength build I immediately cast it to the side as something that I would not use. However, you can change the scaling on the handle of any weapon by altering it at the workshop. So, I picked a handle with my preferred move set (Police Baton) and used a motivity (strength) crank to change the scaling to an “A” in strength. I then was able to put that handle on the dex Booster Glave weapon and it changed to a strength “A” scaling weapon. Nice! You do have to find the appropriate “crank” to make the modification to the handle and I wonder how hard they will be to come by. Anyway, I thought that was cool. Awesome game so far!

Played about an hour so far,and this is so much better than I thought it would be.The performance is amazing, and it's the closest to a Souls/Bloodborne gamer I have ever played

Neither Dualsense nor Switch Pro controllers (with and without Steam Input) are being detected by the Game Pass version

Off to a good start... :\

That difficulty definitely gets hard on the later bosses and I think it's necessary to learn to both parry and dodge. That said, the godly Esoterrick is already doing zero damage fights which to me means that dodge is pretty consistent.

I'm using my DualSense right now using DS4Windows
Wow, I didn't even know DS4Windows was still around. I haven't had to install it in like 5+ years because 99% of games just support them or Steam Input out the box these days. Don't think I've ever seen a game that just didn't detect the controllers with Steam Input lol
