Affordable care act is great but the first thing the Republicans will do if they secure the White House is repeal it, it's sickening.

Glad too hear this guy's story his life sounded pretty horrible but he's on the mend now.

They say they'll repeal it, but repealing it requires a process and a plan. It's a long, drawn out process to dismantle it.

They like saying "repeal and replace" without ever mentioning what the replace is... except they cannot repeal it without something to replace with, or at least, a plan to dismantle it over a decade or so.

So it's one of those things where I believe they'd actually do it, but it would be so much work, they'd probably just be content watering it down as much as they can, because full on repeal is basically impossible. You can't just snap your fingers and millions of people no longer have insurance. It's just not that easy.

Next step will be single payer healthcare at the state level. If Colorado can pass it and make it work this year, expect to see other states follow suit in the future.

I hope.

Social responsibility. That's what America needs to focus on. We want to be great then we have to be responsible. The Republican Party has yet to realize this.

Even more perplexing was that this guy didn't even have his. He had a pre-existing condition that would have prevented him from ever getting private coverage. "Fuck you and me, the rich got theirs."

I have seen so many right wing libertarians who argue socialised medicine is slavery. I have seen articles of people who think that being at the mercy of charity to pay for their chaemotherapy makes more sense than socialised medicine. At first you laugh, then cry, then get angry. What makes it worst is you have Ron Pauls of the world who think that people can barter chicken and eggs to pay for healthcare services. A checkup sure? But let's see you do that for cancer treatment or a premature birth.

Like a great many things, Republicans tend to find themselves at odds with their best interests and only seem to consider alternative positions when they are the ones suddenly in need. Sad and selfish, but glad he "gets it".

Stories like these make me glad I live in a European country were good healthcare is the norm. I also have an auto-immune disease and require a monthly injection which normally costs 1000€. I only need to pay 10€.

Universal coverage and a public option come well before a single payer system.

Yes. I think we need to do this first instead of tearing down the existing system -- it would be too chaotic to switch. We saw what obamacare did and all that did was raise standards and give people an extra option of an exchange.

The ACA is easily the best thing to healthcare in forever, baby steps? Sure. Could improve? Of course. The pre-existing mandate is a literal life saver. It has done good for me and my family.

Why do I get the feeling he's still going to vote Republican? I seriously see a person like that with the "fuck taxes, give me tax cuts" mentality.

He might have been voting republican on some other motive though. Like gun rights or abortion. So ACA opposition was bandwagon rather than actual motivation for voting.

The sad thing is California passed single payer 10 years ago. And Schwarzenegger vetoed it.

That's the problem with a lot of republican social policy and rhetoric. The people that believe strongly in it usually arent the people affected by it. Once something affects them then they see the light

Have a steady job with health insurance that you barely use? REPEL OBAMACARE WHO FUCKING NEEDS THAT. Lose your job and get diagnosed with something that is expensive to fix...... "help pls"..

Gay marriage is a similar thing. If you dont know any gay people, its easy to be against and proclaim that from afar. The second your child or sibling comes out as gay and wants to experience the joys of marriage like anyone else, its harder to be as adamant.

Personal life built for children, simple jobs and able to house a large family? PRO LIFE FOREVER WHY O WHY WOULD YOU HAVE AN ABORTION. Made a mistake, and now pregnant with a child you actually cant afford that might end a career or education path...."abortion pls"

Everytime I read stuff like the OP it just makes me hate that damn party so much for essentially promoting lack of empathy

Yup. You see that dissonance even here on GAF. Check out the Sanders tax thread.

Wait... What? I don't remember this!

Looking for meaning in GAF
"We can only help you so much, because we deem the value of your life to be proportionate to that of your financial situation."

And we wonder why the rest of the world looks at us the way they do.

Yeaaaaaaaa...

It's a lot of words to say "I have this thing that could save your life. But you're poor, so fuck you."
