I think SFV has performed pretty respectably in 3 years, considering how hated it was at launch (and still continues to be by many), and the fact that it's only available on 2 platforms.

Monster Hunter is CAPCOM at their pinnacle. Ghosts n Goblins, Devil May Cry, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, etc helped create genres but I think Monster Hunter is my favorite CAPCOM series of all time.

Man Code Veronica sold over a million just on Dreamcast, i didnt think it would be that high. And RE6 9mil?, i was under the assumption it was a flop.

Just add a bonus of Mega Man 11 and X Collection sales since they're currently just short of reaching the 1 million mark.

Capcom bitched it "under performed". RE7 also "under performed".
There is a reason why Capcom sales expectations are kind of memed. There unreasonable sales expectations have kind of became a joke, thankfully they seem to have finally chilled off a bit recently, but we'll see.

SFV Arcade Edition helped salvage its sales somewhat. It was really bad before that IIRC. Really shows how import single player is to selling fighting games to a broad audience.

puts into perspective why x franchise you love isn't getting the red carpet treatment unless it's monhun or RE

I'm always amazed at how many Mega Man games they made that didn't really sell anything (many of which I love).

I get triggered seeing this list. So many insanely good Capcom franchises which don't sell even half they should sell.

Dino Crisis sold over 2M in 1999... why haven't they made a sequel or reboot yet?

It added several hundred thousand sales and is the best iteration of V, but it definitely hasn't salvaged anything. Capcom's handling of S4 has made most question the games future but hopefully they're just being awful with communication and have some cool stuff planned for what remains of S4.

Agreed about Arcade edition, but I wonder how much it had to do with the single player offerings - which lets be honest, for the casual fan, compared to the rest of the fighting games out there, are pretty lackluster, and how much it had to do with it simply being a better deal, a $35 top tier fighting game with a decent amount of characters (and yeah now with a garbage story mode and arcade runs)

I mean salvage in sales as it was around 2 million before Arcade Edition, and 1.4 million of that was just in the first month meaning it had just sold a additional few hundred thousand in 2 years, so AE added a million actually. You're talking salvage as in support, I mean long time support means more than just raw sales, you still need enough continued players and DLC buys from those raw sales, which would be another issue.

Not sure what you mean, SFV AE's SP is actually pretty decent compared to a lot of modern fighters surprisingly..... While characters are the most important part of selling a fighter, SP is second. Just to give you an idea, when it comes to Tekken 7's (that has a big and good roster) PS4 trophies, which I would say has worse SP than SFVAE, it has less than 24% of players playing online, yet has over 50% for beating arcade and 3 consecutive wins in treasure battle, and almost 35% beating story. Also if you look at trophies for Capcom's other fighter, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, less than 12% of people played a single match online, yet almost 29% beat it's ugly/poor story mode and 22% arcade mode.

I would say SFV finally getting a arcade mode, and multiple ones at that, went a long way into encouraging buys on top of people finally having there characters, regardless of quality.

I don't really consider it as good as many other fighting games I've played or seen this gen - why do you say it's better than Tekken 7's? T7 had a pretty robust story mode, and while it bored me to tears in execution, I liked the scene direction and artwork and VO's and I was interested to see what happened. I find SFV's story mode and character specific story things to be absolutely laughable when compared to it's peers. I don't have it anymore, but I thought Tekken had basically all of the modes that SFV does, but imo it bested it in the story mode.

But I mean SC6 has a lot of single player content, Smash Bros is loaded, DBFZ has a very lengthy story mode and all the required modes, ditto Guilty Gear Xrd, (the story mode was incredible I thought, basically just a movie, but damn it was fun to go through)

I just though the SFV story mode felt very amateurish for lack of a better word, the whole presentation had this off feeling. I wasn't very engaged in the conflicts, the acting, any of it really. The character specific story things are ok, but are over way too quickly.

Multiple arcade modes? I would hardly call the various "arcade courses" different modes, you're just fighting a different number and selection of characters in each one. But yeah, of course those SP trophy numbers will always be higher in a fighting game, not surprising at all.

I still have a hard time believing that a substantial number of casual sighting game players were specifically motivated to move on SFV because of the arcade or story modes being added. I think the price was right, and it was finally up to par mode-wise.

The craziest number there is Street Fighter II selling over 6,000,000 unites on the snes. That game was insane.

Tekken 7 had a better main story mode for sure thanks to the production values of the fights and cutscenes, although it still suffered from the infamous reporter 2D scenes that were panned, but I find SFV AE edges it out elsewhere. You say SFV's character stories are over too quickly, but T7's were just 1 fight and a cutscene that should have been part of arcade mode instead, and arcade mode was just 5 fights. T7 was all treasure battle for offline after main story. Those routs were still neat, as you still have secret fights in some, and various artwork and endings to unlock, better than what most modern arcade modes offer in fighters.

Smash and Guilty Gear Xrd are definitely part of the top for this gen. SCVI is decent enough, but budget definitely hurt quality outside of character stories. DBFZ SP though I thought was pretty horrible, its arcade mode is really really bad and the story is long for all the wrong reasons, it kind of backs up what I'm saying on just having it sales.

I think the price was right, and it was finally up to par mode-wise.
Exactly. The price helped too, but SFV had been 20$ for awhile with season passes regularly on sale, and everyone knew you could grind for free characters, so I don't think it helped that much giving it was already very cheap.

It seems to be everyone's favorite Street Fighter.
Yeah for sure but there were far less systems out there in 1991 compared to now. It sold the same as SFIV and V did combined and those were available on PS4,PS4,360 and PC. The three systems total over 250,000,000 consoles sold compared to the SNES's 49,000,000 and still couldn't match the mania that was SFII in sales. Shits cray

I mean I don't know where lol. It's been a while since I played it but the whole thing felt weird, the acting and VO's were unremarkable and there was very little spectacle or interesting conflict. It felt like a paint by numbers story that they were being forced to tell, absolutely zero heart to it at all. Man even the short little animated clips in the character intros from 4 felt so much more lively and interesting to me than everything offered in 5. I wish they would get their head out of their ass and make a proper SF game the way Arc makes their 2D games now, 3D but mimicking their wonderful 2D sprites. The SF2 animated movie was awesome, everyone loves classic SF, if they went this route graphically they could make some really kick ass cinematics. I actually really like the way the models look in SFV, but put into a movie in-game, they did jack shit with them.

It's funny you arguing for SF over there with your Tekken avatar and I'm shitting on it while sporting Chu-li lol.

I liked the arcade modes actually, I found it fun to go through the different routes and try to hit all the top tier fights. But yeah that story mode...wow. At the end I was literally just skipping everything the second it would allow me to, and it still took me hours and hours to get through, I couldn't believe it.

You might be right, for me personally it was the price, I wasn't really thinking about fighting games at the time and skipped this at launch because of the bad press I think, but when I saw it was $35 for a brand new fighting game, one that I had enjoyed almost all previous versions of, I just said yeah why not.

My wording was off, I meant SFVAE edges it out elsewhere in terms of overall modes. I thought SFV's story mode was really really bad, so bad I never finished, it doesn't edge out anything. What I mean is outside of main story SFV's got arcade with multiple routs (some up to 10 fights with secret fights, and some shorter ones) and unlockable artwork, multiple fight character stories, survival with multiple routs, tutorials and character trials/challenges, and vs. CPU, which I find pretty solid selection of modes compared to a lot of the modern competition, especially T7 with it's 5 fight arcade mode, treasure battle, and 1 fight with 1 cutscene character stories.

Ah ok, I see. And when you write it all out like that it doesn't sound too bad I guess, I've always been happy with survival and online to be honest. But when I said it was lackluster I guess I was thinking because most fighting games have trials nowadays, an arcade mode of sorts, and vs cpu, so what stands out to me in terms of SP offerings is the story content, or even further extras like those in Smash or SCVI.

Sales were actually at just under 2.5m before AE launched. So it was a several hundred thousand boost but ultimately did not turn the game around, especially considering it was a relaunch effort. It's in that regard I interpreted salvage, or the lack thereof. Support aspect is more an indication of Capcom's intentions with the game and compared to previous seasons they've given the impression they're mostly done with it, which I hope isn't the case. They at least need to add one more character so the select screen is symmetrical. :messenger_winking:

It's available on PS3 PSN for $6, thankfully.

A collection sounds good in theory, but that would make the cliffhanger ending of Legends 2 sting even more, imo. I'm in favor of them just porting all three games digitally to PS4, individually, and recommend people only download 1 and Tron Bonne. I hate 2 so much because of it not being a finished game. =/

I just looked up where you got your numbers, which was from Ono himself. So as of September 2017 Capcom's official financial report said 1.9 million, but then Ono in December 2017 said it was short of 2.5 million. Of course SFV AE was announced October, so if Ono wasn't exaggerating, that AE hype seems like it boosted sales by around 500K for 2-3 months, then the AE retail version itself kind of did meh. So you're right, salvage wouldn't be the right word, but seems like the announcement of the AE features alone interested a few hundred thousand people to go ahead and pick it up, which at least ties into what I was telling Nymphae Nymphae , before AE itself even released.

But yeah, definitely needs at least 1 more character to fix the uneven roster spot. My vote goes to Rose. :messenger_winking_tongue:

For sure, they can't just leave it like that lol. Eventhubs guys sound absolutely certain it will be Rose, not sure if they have some inside knowledge or not.

IIRC Capcom themselves were teasing Rose in a similar way they teased Sakura, then revealed Kage instead. So people aren't sure if they were trolling/misleading, or if Rose is actually planned.
