LTTP - 3DS, new after price cut 3DS owners share your impressions

I have no problem playing with the 3D on, it doesn't give me headaches. It doesn't hurt my eyes, and I don't need to re-adjust my eyes with the "slightest fucking bump."

Keep thinking that. It suits you.

I will. Because there is no magical autostereoscopic 3D technology on the 3DS you own that everyone else doesn't, and all current autostereoscopic 3D technology currently has horrendous sweet spot issues. So, it's either you're lying or being extremely disingenuous about what you consider a "good" amount of give. I know which one I think it is.

It's like playing the Wii and complaining that when you turn your head away from the TV you lose the effect.

It's actually not like that at all, but if it's any consolation the award for worst analogy ever has changed from the guy who compared Pitbulls to guns to you now.

You saying something is the "worst" has lost all meaning, though.

you're like the religious people who tell me not to quote the scripture to point out when they're breaking it: "you don't even believe in it, so don't tell ME what the Bible says!"

And I just snigger and mock them: "Whether I believe in it or not, doesn't change the truth of what i've said."

Here, I gladly pass to you my coveted Worst Analogy Ever award.

Picked my 3DS and OOT 3D today, as an early birthday present - my daughter was so excited to see it that she couldn't hide it till next week.

The 3D (for me) is awesome, and it's a really nice handheld - AR cards are fun, and a huge step up from the DS lite I have.

I'm not sure how many more games I'll get until Mario Kart 3D - the only one I'm interested in is Pilotwings, so may try to find that used on CL.

Had huge issue with the 3DS first time i tried it - massive headache and felt sick.

Second time i tried it? not a problem though sometimes the 3D would break down on , say, a particular corner in a ridge track

from then on? Found right level for 3D slider, no issues since.

It's something that you have to get used to. Believe me, I felt the same way when I first tried a demo 3DS at Best Buy. But when I actually had my own system and used the 3D for awhile, it became much easier to focus on. Now I don't have any problems seeing the 3D at all, nor do I have any headaches or anything, and the 3D image doesn't break unless I turn the 3DS to the side quite a bit. I don't even have any problems with the 3D when using the gyro controls in Face Raiders, Steel Diver, and Ocarina of Time 3D. You just need to get used to it, like any other new thing.

For me Super Mario 3D is going to make or break this. If it's absolutely stellar like all the other main Mario games then they've got nothing for me until the next wave of announcements.

Only played with the augmented reality cards so far.

Blew my MIND.

Gonna play Zelda tomorrow at work.

Also, the 3D did hurt my eyes rather fast so I turned it off.

Like I said; It suits you.

Resorting to calling people liars over and over again. It's your modus operandi tested carefully years ago, became an annoying quirk in its present form. No matter what the point of discussion is..If it differs it's a lie. And when you run out of heaps of text, which oddly enough you think gives you some weight in a discussion, just to try and get your point across you just call people liars. No matter what kind of discussion rises; When somebody refutes or neutralizes your points you call it a lie. It must be a wonderful life to always be right and having the freedom to enforce it , no?

The real kicker is. I DO play with the slider all the way up. So after hours of play this horrendous sweet spot you speak of is not horrendous at all. But hey what do I know, right? I just played the 3DS since day one in 3D after all and me as well as others here; We lie our asses off just to spite you.

Don't give yourself that much credit mate.

Noticed something, if the 3DS is even the slightest bit off the eye strain is a lot stronger. When it was perfectly aligned it barely bothered, problem is that just about anything messes up the 3D. just a slight move of the wrist can do it.

A friend and I each bought one reluctantly due to the early price drop/Ambassador Program. I felt pretty horrible about my decision for about a day following the purchase, but it's grown on me. I find the OS to be extremely annoying, which I think has to do with the fact that it's on the cusp of being modern, but comes up short in so many ways. I don't think any of it would bother me as much if it was radically bare-bones (DS style), but at least they have the opportunity of making it better in the future. That there's no 3D Pictochat is criminal.

The idea of the battery life bothers me more than it does in practice. I never take it out of the house, but I can imagine it being slightly annoying having to remember the charger if I ever take it when visiting my parents or something.

While I'm starting to get used to the 3D (Ocarina of Time looks quite nice), it made me feel extremely sick when I first started using it and it's very easy for me to lose the 3D effect. The sweet spot is pretty tiny.

But overall, I'm pretty happy I bought it. Between OoT (I haven't played it since it came out) and VC stuff, there seems to be enough to do.

I've owned one for a few hours. All I own so far is Zelda

Pros
- The black model is way nicer than the dingy beat-up store demo units I'd seen (all blue)
- Ocarina of time still feels pretty good and seems worth playing. I wrote a FAQ for it when it was still new but I don't think I've played through since
- I quite like the 3D effect, I only wish it were a little more pronounced
- Using the gyroscope for the free-look is really clever and frees up the desire for a second analog stick. I like it a lot. It's probably not technically superior to the iPhone's but for some reason I was pleasantly surprised by it (low expectations).
- analog pad is pretty nice. clever design for sure

Cons
- Unboxing experience was pretty awful. Cheap brown thick cardboard. GIGANTIC stack of books and pamphlets on top, 2/3 of which weren't in English. Apple's miles ahead of this.
- After four years on an iPhone and four years neglecting my DS Lite, resistive touch screens just feel *weird* now.
- The system menus and built in apps are clunky as hell.
- The PPI feels SUPER low after 14 months on an iPhone 4. It can't be higher than 100ppi (too lazy to look it up)
- Extreme glare when outdoors
- the y/x/a/b buttons are gummy and lame
- the select/home/start buttons are absolutely awful

Conclusion is that this'll probably have four or five games over its lifetime that I'll absolutely die to play, and it'll collect dust the rest of the time. It'll probably never leave my home. And that's why I only paid $99 for it (GameStop deal), so no regrets.

It's abundantly clear that dedicated portable game devices of this ilk don't have much of a future. The iPhone's current hardware and user experience kicks this thing's ass, just like the iPhone 5 will probably put the PS Vita to shame by the time it finally launches.

When a d-pad or analog becomes standard on a phone, then handhelds will die.

Those who have picked up it, which games did you get? OoT seems like the only no-brainer. I actually bought Monster Tale lol.

I'd say good games are:

RE Mercenaries
Ocarina of time
Pilotwings
Street Fighter IV
Dead or Alive

I just blew at my 3ds, that's pretty cool tbh, especially on the camera menu, I didn't even know about that little feature until I coughed and noticed the menu spinning.

Having used to the App Store on iOS, it really hard to spend $5 (minimum) or more on the eShop. The games on iOS are so much cheaper and better and most importantly, more content than those games on the eShop, it's really hard to justify.

If you have never played any port of Rayman 2 before, get Rayman 3D , bought it launch day and enjoyed it, lol at everyone trying to turn people away by saying it always froze and crashed, never happened to me while playing B^)

That's pretty much my stance as well

Just a heads up to people, it's $143( was $131 too) on amazon warehouse right now , and you might get lucky and get a 3DS that has been to the eshop.

Yep. It's annoying at times in Ocarina of Time, but I've gotten better at holding my hands steady when hitting the L and R buttons. Funny that I have to learn how to hold a handheld properly, but I'm willing to jump through the hoops to get some 3D.

Haha. Just remember to turn off 3D when you do those shooting mini-games. Wasted 60 rupees while using the gyroscope with 3D on.

As another reminder, if you're not interested in seeing on of the stuff in the menu/OS (like the Health and Safety thing); remember you can drag all those icons you don't want and move them to the very end. Also you can change the view of the icons from bigger to smaller too.

Mine:

Download Play, Settings, Health and Safety and Log all the way to the back. :p

I don't understand shit like that. I guess some people adapt to touch-only interfaces for games that are obviously not meant to be touch-controlled. I have Let's Golf 2 for my Android and played it for just a bit of time. Yet, I've already sunk four hours into Let's Golf 3D, even though it's the same fucking game, but I have actual buttons to press. It's a golf game with a meter. I want the actual buttons. Touch control when it's just a substitute for buttons i just janky as hell, and not enough iOS/Android games are still using touch control in place of buttons. This is why games like Angry Birds are so fucking popular, while being just mediocre experiences. At least it's built for a touchscreen.

I hear people saying this all the time, and it is just flat-out untrue.

ATTENTION PEOPLE LOOKING FOR FULL BROWSING LISTS IN THE ESHOP

  1. Scroll to the left on the main shop screen until you get the "search" button, or tap the "menu" button in the upper-left corner of any screen of the shop and choose "search" from there
  2. Tap "Add Search Filters"
  3. Change the platform to whatever it is you'd like to browse, such as "Virtual Console (All)" or "Nintendo DSiWare"
  4. Tap "Apply Filters"
  5. You are now browsing every game for that platform, in order of what was most recently uploaded to the shop. You can tap "Sort By..." to view the list by popularity or user rating, or go back to that "Add Search Filters" page to filter by genre, publisher, or price.

Hiding "browse" functionality behind a "search" tile? Not particularly intuitive, for sure. Not letting you browse alphabetically? Inconvenient I suppose but typically you use a sort like that to find a specific game, and you can do the normal keyword search for that.

The point is, you can browse full platform lists just fine, you just need to know how to do it.
Would an average eShop user normally be able figure this out on his/her own? I sincerely doubt it. I certainly wouldn't. It is flat-out bad UX that really needs to be fixed.

Succumbed to temptation and picked it up at Frys and chose DoA and Samurai Warrior . Thought about picking up SSF4 as it was on sale for 30 but decided against it since AE is now 30 as well

Thanks to all of you I'm now owner of yet another nintendo handheld

Really wanted Zelda as well but I want something I can just pick up and play for now and I have jeanne d arc on psp waiting

I'm pretty happy with my Home layout.
3DS/DS games along the top
shop + smaller, retro games below
Mii + in-built games and apps below that (incl. Pokedex and Video -- both receive SpotPass atm)
Settings + Tools along the bottom.
with trailers on the next page along the bottom two rows.

The system is definitely smaller and sleeker than I thought.

I didn't have a great first impression with the 3D, but I didn't really buy it for the 3D anyway, so I'm not too bothered.

Hmm, interesting. Re-arranging mine now. :p

EDIT:
Done!

Similar to yours, but still have the Health and Safety and Settings, etc. "hidden".

Row 1: Games
Row 2: Shop/multimedia
Row 3: Game-apps
Row 4: Mii-apps

For now, guess I'll see when I have more stuff installed.

I'm enjoying it alright. If they didn't drop the price and offer the ambassador program there's no way I would have bought it (got it early at Walmart).

I never use the 3D effect. In fact I wish they wouldn't have even added it and instead focused on a stronger system. It's ultimately just a gimmick IMO.

I bought OoT and Ghost Recon (since it was $17). I'll probably only get Starfox and Super Mario 3D this year. Not much else to look forward.

Ultimately it probably wasn't worth the purchase. Lol.

I have a question... Why didn't nintendo add rumble to the 3ds. It would have been a great feature that no handheld that I know of has had built-in.

Do we have some thread where we can exchange friend codes? The 3DS uses a universal code, right? RIGHT?

Also, what's the friend limit?

Quite. I have a couple of dozen games on my ipod, many of which I actually bought. Aside from Monkey Island and World of Goo (both of which originated on other platforms and which suffer from control issues on a tiny touchscreen) the only game I've spent any time on is Cut The Rope. I can't say whether smartphones as they are now will kill dedicated handhelds, but I really really hope they don't because they are fuckawful at it.

Nintendo and Sony need to learn about storefronts from Apple, though. Or Valve. Even the Android marketplace is better than the 3DS and PSN stores.

I'm getting used to the 3D. I'm lucky in that the sweet spot corresponds pretty well to where I naturally hold clamshell handhelds; if it was shaped like a PSP I'd be having a lot more headaches right now. It's also good enough that nascent plans to upgrade our ancient 26 inch HDTV have been put on hold until glasses-free 3D catches on there, too.

In terms of the 3D, your eyes aren't going to get use to it during your first few times playing the system.

To be honest, I think that's why so many people don't like the 3D effect on the 3DS. They start to get dizzy the first time they use the system and then say "forget this" and just don't use the system's 3D effect anymore (which is understandable).

It takes a few hours of gameplay to get use to the effect and the viewing angle. I've had my 3DS since March and I play most games with the 3D slider almost all the way up since I'm use to the effect & viewing angle.

this may or may not be the thread to post this in, but I've been wanting a 3ds ever since launch. My only problem is I do not want to get one for myself unless I get one also for the the wife... Is it worth the $340 initial investment for multiplayer? The newer golf game looks entertaining, I think ghost recon could be fun for us, and I know starfox/mario kart/brawl would be must haves, plus we've never owned anything since GBA's (@ launch too thx to chu chu rocket). Basically my delimma is I cannot own a 3ds unless there a fair reason for both of us to own 3ds and single player games will not help my cause. Any gaffers have advice? Help me sell this to the significant other!

I don't think there are many reasons right now to get two 3DS, but sometime down the line you know this will be a pretty good multiplayer console if just thanks to Nintendo. Mario kart and Smash Bros alone will be quite addictive. And hopefully Nintendo adds some sort of multiplayer if not to this Mario, to whatever next Mario, ala New Super Mario Bros Wii.

At least that's what I think, anyway.

If you haven't owned anything since the GBA, it may be worth your while to pick up two 3DS' and spend some time catching up with DS titles while you wait for the big stuff to hit this fall. =d

That's a pretty interesting Home screen setup. Mine's kinda boring, it's mostly the default layout, but I like it that way.

First I have all the preinstalled titles, and then downloaded applications and 3D Classics, followed by Virtual Console games (organized by release date). Then there's DSiWare, with applications coming first, then all the games in order of price then release date. And then all the 3D videos are at the end. =p

I don't know what to say besides this being patently untrue. The games on iOS are so much better?? More content?? I think you are trolling.

This thread has some good recommendations to get you started.

Aura Aura Climber puts every single game I've played on my iOS device to shame, and it's $2. All of the art style games are worth the price of entry. Boxlife owns me.

I own 4-5x more games on my iPod Touch, but I have already spent twice as much time on the games for my 3DS. I'm pretty sure it's easy to see which games have more content.
