LTTP: Beyond Good & Evil

I've been dancing around this game for a while - I played the Xbox version at a Gamecrazy many months ago, and I was turned off by the visuals (which are somewhere south of awesome) and the general vibe of the game. I also passed on Broken Sword and Metal Arms that day, mainly because the TV was set so dark that I couldn't see what the hell I was supposed to do.

Later on, I picked it up for PS2 for $9.99. Compared to what I played of the Xbox version, it seemed like a big step back - lots more slowdown, slower load times - even the sound didn't seem quite as good. I think the Xbox version supports Dolby Digital, the PS2 version doesn't. The weird control layout hung me up for some reason, too - I got stuck right away when I couldn't figure out how to send photographs to the Science Center. So I dumped it for, I think, $3 or $4 at Gamecrazy.

Fast-forward to today. I'm selling a lot of really good games, returning copies of DDS and VQ to TRU, trading games into Best Buy, then I stop into an EB to trade in the one game that was actually worth more there than at BB - and then what catches my eye but a brand-new copy of Beyond Good & Evil - for the Gamecube. At this point, I really don't want to buy any more games - but I had been thinking that I should really track this down, since it was supposed to be the best one. I even put a deposit down for a special order at Gamecrazy, only to never get it. So there it is, a perfect display copy, marked at $19.99 - the trade-in value of my game is $12.00. I caved and bought it. I found out when I got home there was a noticeable scratch on the disk, but for some reason I wasn't ticked about it. At some point you have to just take what you get - it put some more money in Ubisoft's coffers, so I'm satisfied with that.

So then I go home and play it again, and it seems that the third time's the charm. Why it took me three tries to really love this game, I don't know - but sweet Jesus, do I now. The gameplay is smooth and elegant, always had been, but now the heart of the game has finally hit home with me. That thread a few days ago about what game you would show Roger Ebert - I said MGS then. Now, I would say BG&E. There are a few other recent games with movie-quality production values to compare it to (Advent Rising, Shadow of the Colossus, King Kong), but this is the only one that, for me, nails it down so well that you can believe you are playing a movie. The characters are real - they have families, and friends. They have problems, and arguments, and difficulties. Their poverty is tangible - so when the story proceeds, even if what happens is what happens in every game, it doesn't feel the same. It's special, and it's unique.

BG&E is fantastic. There's something special about it I can't put my finger on. A shame the rest of the series will never be made.

I really liked the game, it was one of those games that once the story got going you were sucked in and had no idea how long you've been playing for. One of the best hidden gems this generation

Great game, but short. Saw some rumor over at OA saying that Ancel has been thinking abou BG&E2 before he started working on King Kong...not sure if it's true but I sure hope so

The opening for BG&E is one of my favorites with the first battle and all. The music after the intro when you go outside is beautiful

Seriously BG&E is one of the most underappreciated games of the generation in my opinion. Such an epic adventure, and one that's quite unique at that.

I thought this was going to be about some Link to the Past/BG&E hybrid game, then I realized you meant late to the party... :(

Well atleast you played an incredible game finally. It really is a shame that a story as good as this won't be fully fleshed out. Man that ending blew...

I played it on GCN as well, last year. At first I wasn't taken by it, but after a few hours in, it really grabbed me. It further cemented Michel Ancel into my little list of game creators that have continually impressed me. The GCN version looks & plays fine.

Oh, yeah .. "don't split up the team!"

LTTP also....

I also finally got around to buying this underated gem after passing it up a few times. Initially the artstyle turned me off because it wasnt what i'm traditionaly used to. I had to warm up to it

Got the Xbox version off of Ebay for $20.50

You can tell by playing it that this game has alotta heart and i'm already smitten by it. The little things is what makes this game sooo animated and warm. things like

- Payge catching up to you with his little spastic awkard run as with his banter
- Being inside the city and if you have a 5.1 stereo system, as do I, hearing all of the vehicles pass by you in each channel....extremely immersive
- who would have thought taking pictures could be so much fun
- Jade is amazing and elegent at the same time and I love her design. Maybe its the green lipstick :D
- rastafarian rhinos!

I played BG&E on PC and I really liked. I'm thinking about getting a console version, should I go with the gamecube or xbox one?

Whichever one you can find. The GCN version supports Dolby Surround Pro Logic II and the Xbox one doesn't, but the Xbox version has the shortest load times. Just avoid the sloppy PS2 port.

xbox version has Dolby 5.1

yea I too really liked this game.

it was great fun...i just wish they would have turned on vsync. the tearing in the water parts were annoying (on the xbox version)

The reason why Beyond Good and Evil is so good is because it correctly understands what a game is all about. It creates a world and opens it up for you: It doesn't explain every little aspect of the worlds history, it lets you understand through experience. So you go through with a sense of awe, seeing new creatures for the first time and talking to them or fighting them or taking pictures of them and you're drawn in. It's how a videogame narrative should be done, because it brings it alive. It makes it feel real, even with its fantastical setting.

I don't know what game you guys are playing, but BG&E was some half-hearted mess of a game. Ebert wouldn't change his mind in the least.

I didn't know it had that flaw.. I think the water looks great in the GCN one.

One of my favorites this gen, I love everything about it, the visuals, characters, music, gameplay, world, it just all clicks for me. I bought it on a whim when it dropped in price $20 back then, just fantastic.

its minor tearing but it still annoys me

tearing is just something that really annoys me and it happens in alot of xbox games.

Very beautiful game and very underated, the only minus i'd give it are the controls they're a little cluncky but you can easily get used to them, they don't stop you from fully enjoying this precious gem.

It's better than Wind Waker, but it didn't get the acclaim it deserved.

To Deku Tree: Your opinion stinks.

i think wind waker and it are pretty even....if it wasnt for that one part in wind waker, i think it would be better than bg&e

The sequel is actually in pre-production as we speak. Thank god since this is one of the best games of the generation and needs a sequel.

Haha.... the question is, what platform are they making it for? Obviously the multi-platform idea didn't work so well. I think the PC version sold the best, by a factor of 3:1 over any of the others, or something like that.

I'm sure it would have done better on consoles if it wasn't released in November, with no marketing, on the same day as Sands of Time.

Perfectly stated. I loved being in this world, and I didn't want the game to end. Just a great experience all around.

Beyond Good And Evil is an awesome game.
The only complain i have is that the story is all packed up and go too fast in the second half of the game. Once
the lighthouse get destroyed
, the story goes fast-fast-fast, punch after punch and then BANG -- the end. :(

Best $5 I ever spent.

I wish you a painfull death. Britney's Dance Beat is good at 5$.
You are an insult to any people having any kind of passion for videogames or even the smallest sincere interest.

Ancel always makes his games multi-platform.

Wow, that's pretty harsh words for someone who actually bothered to buy the game.

What do you have to say to those of us who were never interested in this game in the first place?

Hey now... I just bought it today, and the game has been out for 2 years. Give him a break. :P

I paid $50 for this game. Bow before me... and watch me weep as I recount its sharp price drop just a few weeks later.

Still, I thought this was a wonderful game even for $50, and I would gladly shell out $50 again if we get that sequel.

You? you're perfect fine. You choose not to buy, it's your right.
You know it's like when you give tip. If you're to give one penny you shouldn't bother giving some tip at all because it's kinda humiliating.
Beyond Good And Evil is soooooo worth more than 5$ regardless you like this type of game or not imo.

:lol i wasn't even talking to you, are you also LagunaX ?

Woohoo, this board is getting on fire easily :D

I'm not sure if I'd ever replay it (and I still may), but g-d damn did I love this game, from beginning to end. It and PoP SoT together. THAT was a good week. :D

So he should have walked past that $5 copy and bought it on Ebay for $75 instead?

If it the sealed retail copy, he's perfect fit in my "rules". But i would buy a new copy on some store, it would prolly cost less.

Suppose Circuit City had it for $5 (which is almost certainly how he got it, if you ask me). Then?

I remember wanting the game when it was first released but I didn't have time to pick it up and play it right away. By the time I went to pick it in January it was a bitch to find (I wanted the GCN version because I heard the PS2 version sucked). I remember calling half a dozen stores in my area before finding a TRU that had one copy in stock. After reading this thread I'll be playing it again this week or next.

Actually, I was watching a gaming show this weekend, and they actually talked to Ancel and a UbiSoft rep about the Kong game.

When the interviewer asked Ancel what was next, the Ubi rep said that Ancel gets to work on whatever he wants. Ancel then said he would like to continue the BG&E story. It looks like it's going to happen.

More BG&E would most definitely convince me to pick up a next-gen machine.

The thing I really loved about the game was that it actually felt like I was influencing the events of its world. It felt like I was a real player in everything that was happening. That's not something I've experienced before, and it was supremely awesome.

I picked it up after the price dropped, but really that was only because I didn't have time for it beforehand. If I had known how superb it was, I would have paid the full price upfront even if I had to wait to play it.
