lttp: Got myself an Oculus Quest and it's crazy good...

My only experience with roomscale VR has been at work with an HTC Vive a few years ago.
But holy shit, does the Quest tracking work well and I think the image quality is quite fine as well.

That tutorial you do with the robot dancing is the weirdest good shit I have experienced in a while.

Also tried out Superhot, which I think is amazing. Had a few laughs about how immersed you get while playing it...

On the media side, there are not many good 360 degreee videos around, imo.
And I don't have any idea yet how to watch VR porn on it.

I am not sure yet if I keep it, or if it ist just too much of a gimmick for me for the price they ask for.
If you are into VR, this is definitely not the worst thing you can buy...

It’s OK. It’s so uncomfortable that it’s basically a torture device and the refresh rate is abysmal. Luckily we just got the leak yesterday for the Quest S!

After few days of testing this thing, I have to say that...

  • while it can certainly be improved upon, I don't feel that the Quest is uncomfortable. Maybe a bit front heavy, but calling it a "torture device" is so far out I don't even know how you could get to the point of calling it like this
  • the refresh rate doesn't really bother me. I don't have any experience with recent VR devices, but I never felt like the Quest was sluggish or vomit inducing due to its slowness.

First off I wondered, if I'd be bothered about its lack of great graphics due to its lame snapdragon processor. But i have to say, for what it's trying to accomplish, it really works for me with it's style over realism thing going on.

Which brings me to my biggest problem with the Quest (and which applies to all contemporary VR solutions):
Why should I be bothered about the lack of graphics, if most of that shit I see LOOKS SO FUCKING BLURRY.

There is a certain zone where stuff looks crisp and detailed, but it really drives me nuts that I cannot focus on more far away objects with my eyes and get them sharp to look at.

Sorry, but all the other stuff like resolution, frame rate and graphics power (shaders, etc) are pants compared to this problem.

I have been reading up about it, and it seems they are working on several solutions to these problems (eye tracking, varifocal lenses, etc).

Up until then, I don't really think that this technology makes a lot of sense.
It's amazing in a way what they have already accomplished, but if I feel like I have severe eyesight problems while using this, I am not sure if I won't simply wait until a device arrives that can tackle this.

My 5 cents, your mileage may and will vary..

I own one, except for the crappy graphics\framerate in most of the titles compared to big brother oculus rift it is a great device.

Buy thrill of the fight, the best boxe simulation out there.

I want one so i can use oculus link (as I’d prefer the cheaper wireless model over the cumbersome cables of the rift) with my pc, but I’ll still need to wait awhile, that stuff is expensive

Enable developer mode and install SideQuest on your PC - then enjoy many good free games like Quake 2 or Half Life.

In my opinion Quest is the future of VR.

Wireless with the processing power built in or perhaps streamed wirelessly if they can get the latency down low enough.

Walking around inside a VR environment is super immersive and the ease of using Quest with no wires to set up, no PC to boot up and just play on the couch, in the room or wherever. The accessibility just makes it more likely to be used.

Quest 2 probably won’t quite do it but hopefully by Quest 3 (or whatever the equivalent alternative standalone headset is called) the processing power and miniaturisation gets VR to the mainstream.
