Just finished this last night and wtf this movie packed no emotional punch at all. even the ending's alternative reality sequence packed zero punch for me.

going in this i was expecting some huge emotional rollercoaster ride cause of all the raves this movie has got. but i felt nothing nothing at all.

Only nice thing i can say about this movie is some of the backgrounds look very artistic. thats it

while emma stone was cute as fuck in this movie, ryan gosling less so ( looks like your typical bay area mid 20s white guy ) anyway both of their roles felt average as fuck. like the story was just about some average boring couple whose only problem is that oh noooes my career is too busy for you

the whole movie didn't feel emotional at all. maybe i've seen too many animes, read many mangas but i feel like these type of stories have been done sooo much better before.

also btw the musical numbers are forgettable as fuuuuucck, can't even remember anything beside that piano note. Moana did music better than this shit.

Clearly not for you, I was blown away by the technical details of the way it was filmed. It was like an entire movie of the steady cam shot from Goodfellas. I was marveled by that more than the story.

The songs were all quite lacklustre, I literally can't remember a single tune and very few scenes.

Technically I'm sure the film is dazzling, but artistically I was left wondering why it got so much acclaim.

It wasn't really my thing (as musicals usually aren't), but I saw it I understood all the hype / "get it."

Now, does saying Silence was my favorite movie of last year make me a borderline-weeb?

Would genuinely love to know the Animes that are better. I'd happily watch them.

he's probably talking about

Okay, so, which Animes?

Theres been many mangas/anime where the main couple didn't become become the OTP that they couldn't betogether like the girl who leaped through time, hell even 5 cm per second made me almost cry and i hated that movie, Chibi vampire ( girl had to erase all her memories of her own family removed to be with the one she loved), kimi no iru machi, ( ok this did end up together,__, erased .still all of these were more of a emtional ride than la la land.

Gosling and Stone had great chemistry but the script whiffs on everything that would have made the ending work so the whole thing comes off as hollow and forced. Still a stunning movie though with two great musical numbers at the beginning. It's no Chicago though.

Your Lie in April is some powerful shit, so I'm okay with the thread title. I didn't think La La Land was all that good and definitely falls into the overrated camp. People talking like it was a revolutionary musical or something when all it did was toe the line in a safe and kinda boring manner. The music shouldn't be the worst part of a musical and that's what I felt La La Land was doing.

It's no Moulin Rouge or even Chicago. Hell, Moana was a better musical.

The backlash against La La Land is absurd and exhausting.
If you didn't like it, cool. Just sick of seeing dumb comparisons.

I really liked it, but you have to be on board with that kind of movie to not dismiss it out of hand

The hot springs scene was awesome

I feel like an anime version of La La Land would spend two entire episodes to explain in prolonged exposition why the two characters end up where they are. Would probably also have internal narration tacked on during the final sequence.

I felt exactly the same way. The director and camera work were really well done.

As to the OP. I love these internet threads where someone experiences something that is critically claimed, does not get or like said thing, and rushes to the internet to express this to everyone. Hey guys this 2001 Space Odyssey is so boring!

There are several threads on La La Land including one that was just posted recently.

Perhaps you just like stuff to be more melodramatic?

The intimacy and romance is not necessarily the primary thing the film revolves around, but rather it's utilized to put across its point about how much the Hollywood system can screw you over and what you have to give up in order to make it in such a system. In fact, Seb and Mia are primarily more of an analogy to how we try to apply our ambitious dreams in to our realities instead of being genuinely relatable human beings as a priority for the film.

The best thing about that is they still are pretty charming characters and have great chemistry with each other, which helps bring home of what you would have to obtain and give up to pursue your goals: great times that will eventually fade into memory, no matter if you pass or fail. It's one of the thematic reasons as to why I thought downplaying the musical aspect for the second half was great (unlike say, Frozen, which I still have no idea why it dropped the musical stuff midway) because its subtly tells you that the nostalgia is over -- reality begins.

That said, Whiplash did a way more powerful job at really fucking with your head using the same premise.

(Also Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a great movie though, OP. Don't let anyone else tell you different.)

The singings are not strong, but the songs are not bad. The Jazz score is the best part. I also like John Legend's piece a lot too. I got into LLL's album after listen to it a few times, can't say the same for some of the Broadway recordings I have.

I didn't really like the movie but honestly OP you sound a little illiterate. You use the expression "as fuck" three times in three or four sentences.

The emotional core of the movie is about settling versus pursuing your dreams. This is a thing that will seem more relatable if you're old enough to have faced that dilemma. I would guess you're like 19 or 20, right? The movie isn't for you. The fights you've had with your high school girlfriend aren't like this. It's very difficult when you're in a long-term relationship and one partner wants to move across the country. I dragged my now-wife across the country multiple times in pursuit of my goals and it caused a massive amount of stress on our relationship. The other facet of the story is that it's very difficult when you've been working for years and you're not getting the break you want and your partner expects you to provide. If you've ever had a friend who is a long-term actor, musician, or artist you've experienced this. I know a friend of mine, after 5 years of being a musician and making occasional money, finally had to take a day job as a high school teacher to pay the bills. And it really crushed him. This is stuff people can relate to.

But I think these are life experiences you will typically get in your late 20s or early 30s if at all, because that's the time of life where you're expected to settle down and to be on your path. And if you're not on that path, it's going to cause significant strain on your relationships.

The ending sequence is like one of those moments where you look back at the whole of your choices, about what could have been and what is, and you wonder if you would have done something differently or should have. This is also something that's more powerful when you've accumulated more baggage and regret and anxiety about your life choices, which tends to happen pretty linearly over time.

For me, the failings of the movie was not the emotional core or the characters or their performances, but rather that I thought the music was dull and it was mostly a tourism ad for Los Angeles. Many of the places they go are beautiful and magical, but they're not like that in real life, and it's pretty difficult to reconcile the real LA with the romantic silver screen version of it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion>Moonlight>La La Land
I did not think that anything in this thread could be dumber than me comparing Ace Ventura to 2001 Space Odyssey, but you mofo's always find ways to surprise me!

Now someone explain why their lunch was better than La La Land. If we are going to be stupid we should really commit to this thing.

Ugh, "I didn't remember any of ______" is probably my least favorite criticism ever. There's so much going into these movies and we generally watch so many of them all the time that forgetting one specific aspect of them like the melody of a song seems really trivial. I didn't remember much of them either first time coming out of the theater, but then I watched the movie again and now I remember them pretty well. And still, none of this has any bearing on their actual quality, which I think is hit and miss.
