Huh? How can you get that from the OP? Doesn't mention any actors, director, writer, even themes of the movie, when it was released etc. There isn't even one clue to point what movie it could be. Or am I missing something, didn't seem like they edited the OP either.

I think it was pretty obvious because Split was just released.

I didn't feel it was contrived at all. It's those little backstories that most movies in this genre don't even bother with. I thought it was nice character building.

And it explains her odd behavior at the beginning of the film.

It was a stock abuse story that offers little insight and exists mostly to establish her sole reason for surviving, which was easy to predict with McAvoy dropping his lines about untouched people having an impure heart.

I think many movies were released around the same time period? Even on the exact date. And people watch older movies too, I've heard Netflix for example is pretty popular. They didn't say the movie was new. I mean, sure people could take guesses and hit on the right thing. But in no way is that OP a spoiler, it was spoiled in the thread by others, but even then with spoiler tags. Saying that OP is a jerk for very vaque description is dumb and also incorrect.

I loved the ending, but I actually didn't like the movie up until that point. I was rolling my eyes hard
when they started building up the "beast" personality, and slowly but surely he actually transforms into a fucking beast. It all makes sense when you see the ending and realize the universe it takes place in, but I was not vibing with it on it's own merits before seeing the last 2 minutes. As amazing as the surprise reveal was, I'm not sure it makes up for not enjoying the movie in itself.

I guess if you're a complete blockhead then it isn't a spoiler but in context it was blatantly rude and obvious.

Other movies released that weekend:

xXx 3
The Resurrection of Gavin stone

M. Night Shyamalan movies released that weekend that had great buzz because of its ending:

Split

Just watched this and damn
that ending
was wild. I actually still have
never seen Unbreakable
. It's always been on my to-watch list but now I feel like I have to watch it haha. The plot of the movie was kinda meh but McAvoy gave such a compelling performance that he kept it interesting the whole time.

Just watched this and damn, I really liked it. I thought that this was a good movie. I'm pumped about the ending but besides that, this was really good especially considering my expectations of an M. Night movie.

Just saw it and liked it. Ending took me super off guard as well. Was surprised at how brutal it got.

It's not up there with Sixth Sense through Village IMO but wayyyyy fuckin better than anything since.

I rewatched it recently and considering how established the genre is at the moment it's now relatively better than ever

And man is the music top notch too. Gotta check it out.

After watching, I thought it was pretty meh. What was the point of the flashbacks? I was expecting something really clever, but it was just pretty standard stuff

It was context for how she acts the way she acts, and also
to explain why she's "pure"
. Pretty straightforward.

Just trying to present what she went through and how they both connected to each other, and maybe why she was the only one trying to understand him.

I went into this movie with the idea that it aimed for a more realistic, introspective into a mentally ill person due to a recent thread showing people offended at the film porttrayal of it.

Well, I was pleasently surprised with the fantastical approach it actually had, altough I wish the plot had gone further and develop into something more, it was still satysfying.

McAvoy nailed every bit of the movie, and the ending reveal just leaves you itching for more, just genius.

I didn't see it yet but I'm tempted so I didn't read up on any spoilers yet. Question though, how big is the amount of jump scares and/or torture porn, the big ugh's of modern horror?

Really liked the movie, even though I kind of ruined it for myself.
When I heard there was a twist, I tried to imagine the most outlandish thing it could be and thought, "Watch M Night make it a sequel to Unbreakable." Finally saw it yesterday and lo and behold haha.
Doesn't really matter, even without the twist it's his strongest film since Signs, glad to see him back in form and that it's a hit. And hopefully he finally understands how misguided his persecution complex and hating on critics was. Nobody was rooting for him to do badly, we just needed a good movie again.

The ending was the only intresting thing imo. The rest was meh really. And the
Beast stuff was pretty stupid.

I dont get why people are so excited by that. The movie is great, that all anyone wants to talk about is the diner scene detracts from the fact the movie was brilliant in its own right.

It's not just because it
links the two films
, but because it
shifts the genre of the entire movie
.

As others have said,
it goes from a thriller with supernatural parts that feel a bit tacked on, to a pretty great super villain origin story
. The film is good without the ending, but it's really special with it.

Is it any more stupid than things that happen in
other comic book movie universes?

MCU has mutants who evolved, this is pretty much the same thing except super powers seem to be triggered via trauma. I really like how they used the psychology aspect to tie the power to the real world, and I love how before you know the ending it feels a bit silly because you think it's playing it straight, but after it feels fine /because/ it's set in a fantastical universe.

Dont know. Just felt weird.

Very little if any of either. I don't remember any cheap jump scares. And the "torture" in this film is very tame.

There are movies released around the world btw, not just in States. You should maybe consider that too. And even according to this site https://www.moviefone.com/movies/2017/january/?page=2 there's more than what you listed. You only got "spoiled" because of your narrow view of cinema it seems.

Just watched this movie. God damn! I mean, God DAMN! I thought it was a very interesting thriller with a cool concept and great acting, but I didn't expect that!

The ending scene...
When the reporter on the TV in the diner started talking about of the killer, I thought they were going to reveal that his ending monologue was part of some hallucination, but then they affirmed he had survived, which had me scratching my head. "Where's the resolution?" And then the line, "...Mr. Glass." An origin story! I haven't seen Unbreakable in over a decade, and I didn't even remember it being a Shyamalan movie, but I knew it was connected as soon as she said "guy in a wheelchair" and Bruce Willis's face was coming into focus. God DAMN!

Just saw this on Saturday. I had no idea about the ending. I was gobsmacked. When the
Unbreakable
music started playing I looked at my wife and I was like "Why the hell is the
Unbreakable
theme playing. They must of ran out of money."

I thought the movie was a pretty cool idea but the ending really sealed it for me.

I kept thinking it was a
sequel to The Sixth Sense
until the last few minutes of the movie. Go figure.
Edit: It kind of frustrated me more than excited me unless
they are setting up an Unbreakable 3.

I watched this movie because of this thread and I was hoping the whole time for a really cool twist that would make this incredibly dumb story smart and somehow make sense and tie it all together, and then it's
just same lame ass hamfisted unbreakable nod at the very end with 0 ties to the actual story, goddamnit
probably doesn't help that I watched unbreakable in the cinema and never again and thought it was kinda meh

I am constantly impressed by how well
people are still keeping the secret. I had to hold my tongue so bad when my friends were discussing deciding to not go see it since they haven't liked a M Night movie in years. Unbreakable is there favorite one too. I told em it was good, but maybe wait for home video as I could see I shouldn't push too hard or hint in any way. So far they seem to have not been spoiled.

I was impressed by how flat that moment fell in the cinema I was in. My friends and 90% of the people were like "uh okay, what is this now?".

I explained it afterwards and they didn't give a fuck. Maybe the wrong crowd, lol.

The twist was ok. Gaf needs to calm down and stop overhyping simple easter eggs as major plot twists. one of the first impressions i read was on this forum and the guy was making it out to be a life changing experience.

i am a huge fan of unbreakable and even i was like, oh thats cool. and thats about it.

the sixth sense twist was omg worthy.
this was just a cool little thing that sets up an intriguing sequel.
jumping out of your chair for this? come on.

Unbreakable is considered one of M's best movies and he's talked about doing sequels before. This new movie coming along and dropping that it's tied at the end was a pretty unexpected and awesome thing. It's only natural that fans react in such a way. It blew my mind
.

Unbreakable is one of the top 3 super hero films ever made in my opinion, so I was PRETTY excited to find out that the awesome horror movie I just watched was also its sequel.

100% One of the best experiences of this year. Half the theater didn't know what the hell was going on, the other half was a collective HOLY SHIT!!!!!

Massive chills and a huge smile on my face living the theater.
