LTTP: Uncharted 4

I finally played it recently and like it a lot as well, but damn, half the time I had the feeling I was just watching a damn movie. It got frustrating when it felt like I haven’t had control of Nate for like an hour. I found myself saying “ let me fuckin play the damn game already”.

I feel like Uncharted has more gunplay
Yeah it seems more like a shooter so far than an exploring game. Maybe its my own mistake thinking it was more like a tomb raider game. When tomb raider got rebooted I remember it being criticised for being a clone of uncharted. To me they both seem like completely different games. Both good in their own ways

Personally I lump them in the same category, defined by the huge set pieces.

So far there doesn’t seem to be any big open world areas in uncharted 1, I am up to about chapter 11. Does this change in later games?

Uncharted 1 is the one I've never played haha

The series is as linear as they come. Don't go to Uncharted if you want an open world experience

It’s decent so far but not as good as it was made out to be, there isn’t a lot of places to explore to be honest, very corridorish type of gameplay. Not that it is bad but not as much freedom of movement I thought it would be, with the tomb raider reboot there are huge parts of the game where you can wander around anywhere with uncharted 1 so far there doesn’t seem to be this to the same level of tomb raider. Graphics are good

Yeah I guess Uncharted is more linear than Tomb Raider

Are the later games like that or does it open up more? If anything what I have played of the first game its more like a gears of war game with climbing than tomb raider

Uncharted is a climbing simulator with amazing set pieces and some shooting bits. It's a really fun experience to be part of

If you're expecting Grand Theft Auto it is not

No was expecting more of a tomb raider type of game with big ares to explore. What it seems to be so far is walk along an area then a horde of bad guys happen then walk a bit more with a climbing segment then a horde of bad guys. Not saying it is bad just massively different to what I personally thought it was. It’s enjoyable

That's pretty much the series until UC4, then LL (to a lesser extent). Advance the story along a set path, see glittering pickups and cover, shootout. Rinse, repeat. However, UC2 does succeeds the most dressing up the illusion and as a result really works.

I think the Tomb Raider reboot is a more comprehensive series than Uncharted fwiw. The problem was that CD listened and acted upon all the hollow complaints and made each game worse with succession (but the gameplay mechanics kept it solid. It's why we ended up with geothermal valley in Rise and the stupid hub area in Shadow.

Naughty Dog games are essentially movies dressed up as interactive experiences

Yeah a lot have said that, not found it to be the case with the first one so far. There are cut scenes but not to the point where it’s annoying so far. I look forward to playing some of the later games

if I remember right tomb raider was criticised for copying uncharted a lot when they rebooted it, I honestly dont see them as being the same type of game. They are both realy good but both different, I think the only things that are similar are the climbing bits. The gunplay in uncharted it good but in tomb raider reboot I just wanted to explore a lot rather than shot a lot.

I like the game but I did not like the two levels you had to explore with your car. It overall stopped the flow of the game and just made it less enjoyable. The story is great but the AI is so dumb. Great story. Pretty graphics. Average gameplay. Overall 8.5 from me. Its a fantastic game that should be played by anyone who has a ps4

I was done with the series after finishing Uncharted 2.
I got half-way through Uncharted 3 before I remembered "oh yeah, I've had enough of Uncharted" and quit.
I got a few hours into Uncharted 4 before I remembered "oh yeah, I forgot not to buy this because I've had enough of Uncharted" and quit.

Worst of the series for mine. Still love the story of the original game best. This game was just too long and boring. The brother being introduced was just crap. The 3 originals on PS3 were fantastic games. This one looks stunning yet is a hollow retread of the first 3 games.
In my opinion Amy Hennig was a massive loss. I would’ve loved to have seen her version of Uncharted 4.
From the rumors, her version of Uncharted 4 sounded pretty bad with no gunfights for the 1st half of the game and with Sam being the evil brother. Druckmann and Bruce Straley had to come in and save the project

They pulled off a miracle by finishing the game almost from scratch and it became one of the greatest games of this generation

My least favorite thing in the Uncharted games is the combat. I just don’t think the gun play is all that special, compared to other shooters it’s actually quite weak. I like the story, dialogue, and climbing, puzzle solving elements the most.

One of the great things in U2 is how well designers understood limitations of their climbing system.
They never make u climb for more then couple minutes at a time and more often then not it directed in a way that camera exposing u to a new elements of the map, puzzle mechanism or some background action

They instead made you fight through 500 waves of enemies in the most poor man's Gears of War gameplay possible

Do not agree.
Game motivates movement during shooting to a much bigger degree then Gears n at times adding verticallity n climbing into the mix n also often giving u multiple strategies to deal with enemies
ALL of the big fights are almost entirely bout movement rather then taking cover

What? Even on normal difficulty if you do not stick your ass into cover half of the game you're dead, this is not like Mass Effect 2 that you have an excuse like playing as Vanguard, i mean, this is not controversial even among people who like the game.

Love it. Appreciated the pacing alot make the second time round as well.

Anyone who has done the pirate ship wreck on Crushing (legit) as well, will forever have my respect.

in Uncharted almost every arena and entire combat is clearly designed around movement... That is true even in U4

I'm replaying all of them right now. Uncharted 4 is the worst. People "love" it because it clings in nostalgia of the other 3 and it looks beautiful.

The series was about action. It was like being in an Indiana Jones movie. However, the 4th one became just like a museum showcase. It doesn't have huge set pieces like Uncharted 2 or 3. The biggest one was the Jeep chase, and that was like Uncharted 1 level of set piece.

U2 > U1 > U3 > UPSV > U4

Hold up..... what's wrong with it clinging on to nostalgia? (I don't think it even clings to nostalgia I just think you've worded it like it's polarising in the game - it's not)
Most of your favourite franchises, even in movies use nostalgia (and i'm sure you got really giddy when you saw some little throwback) it's the last game (for Drake) so now is the chance to throw in some memory trip lane moments.....like that's absolutely normal. ND know the journey players have been on with the characters so what on earth is the issue with some call backs to remind us what we've been through? It affected nothing in a bad way. It doesn't even pride itself on being the best nostalgia trip game.

Also pure action moments in this game. But if the game was saturated with more set pieces than it had, it'd just get slagged off by haters for relying on set pieces.

One of my most favourite lines from gaming is in it 'En garde, dickhead'
Although Uncharted 2 had 'Thanks for the input Jeff'.

Rafe Adler was the best villain of the series. I preferred Uncharted 2 but I'm allowed to enjoy them all, including the Vita (RIP) one. Port it you trash pandas.

Pacing is fucked, but the setpieces and gameplay are marvelous

Its VERY fluid for a 30 fps game. Feels good to play. Looks incredible. Story was also really cool, imo.

But yeah, pacing is atrocious. Replaying the game is really boring. First levels are snoozefests.

Druckman needs a gameplay director like Straley was to keep him in check.

Uncharted 4 and TLOU 2 were two games that I adore, but are a pain to replay.

He needs an editor to say "Hey Neil, cool story, but lets introduce some gameplay here and here to spice things up"

That's why Lost Legacy was MUCH better in terms of pacing while still telling a touching personal story with Chloe.

It had new directors that made the game with really good pacing

Already at chapter 7 this game is real hard to stop playing. Loving the environments so much! Italy is so beautiful and it’s scratching that Assassins Creed itch of climbing around gorgeous level design. Story is great. It’s every bit as good as a Hollywood action movie like Mission Impossible or something. Great stuff.

Uncharted 4 is the closest Naughty Dog has ever got to the best game they ever released (Uncharted 2). Crazy how to this day Uncharted 2 hasn’t been topped yet

I feel like the Tomb Raider reboots have overtaken Uncharted in the Uncharted genre

Dungeons are more fun in Tomb Raider (and the ones in Shadow are gorgeous), but the Tomb Raider stories for the last 2 have been weak (arguably, the last 3 are weak, but the reboot was fresh so it was easy to ignore the story problems and the weak antagonists).

Part of the problem, though, is the franchise and Lara herself - they have to manufacture problems for her that usually go against the "raid tombs for fun" gameplay loop, and in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, it was especially grating.

Nathan Drake's more fun, Lara's just too perfect (?) to really be interesting. The older Tomb Raider games were more interesting than the last 3, though.

I did enjoy parts of Shadow, though, but the story wasn't one of those things.

"These bridges are clearly not built to code"

"Sure they are - the pirate code!"

i LOL'd

this game is fun, has an almost Goonies-for-adults vibe to it

indeed, this game takes a whimsical, romantic approach to storytelling. the new Tomb Raiders by contrast are all SO SERIOUS about Lara's horribly boring guilt trips.

lot of idiot critics say that Nathan Drake is a mass murderer who should be traumatized by all the violence he is doing, but the new Tomb Raider is what you end up if you actually follow through with that. boring torture porn.

that isn't the point, it's about The Adventure. i wish Tomb Raider was as fun as this!

I used to be in the camp of UC2>>>>Everything but having recently played back through it via the collection I have to say UC4 is better in every way.
Yeah I really liked 3 most of originals but least year I replayed all on ps4 in order and 4 is just incredible. 2 also is better than 3 for me now. 1 still the worst but not as bad as I remember

The game is just astonishing in terms of detail. Easily the best adventure game last gen. Uncharted 1 is a repetitive drag, Uncharted 2 is the best adventure game that generation and Uncharted 3 was disappointing, but still okay.

Is 'That Pure Potato'
I think that as far as pure adventure games go, it's probably the best ever to meld good gameplay with outstanding story and acting. It's one of my favorite games ever.

I just started playing this. I like it a lot so far. It is my first uncharted. How many times does Nadine kick my ass though? Jesus. I just slaughtered soldiers left and right. I don't let Sam shoot her though? Screw that kill them all.

Uncharted The Lost Legacy was a leaner, tighter experience imo.
Uncharted 4 was a bit bloated, the long walking and talking/climbing sections killed my interest for wrapping up another playthrough for collectables and trophy runs, plus checkpoints were especially irritating when playing Crushing.
Sully looks weird too :-/
Don't get me wrong though, still adored it.
I honestly hope it's wrapped up now.
I loved the characters and the camaraderie and I'll never forget Nate and company but I don't want it to become this hideously tired franchise like Halo.

I won’t be buying another. I’ve recently replayed Uncharted 4 (finished last week, last played in 2016), and the story is nicely concluded. I don’t need a reboot playing as a family member. The story is done, finished, complete.

Uncharted 4, lovely game. Gameplay elements surprisingly fun; the scuba diving and driving are tight. Some of the most beautiful locations/scenery in the series, and I loved the actual pirate theme.

Only complaints are the rather bloated platinum. Nearly 200 collectibles, seriously ND? The armoured car that chases you and literally becomes Michael Myers and Nadine who has the strength and power of the terminator.

I liked Lost Legacy much more too. If i had to descripe Uncharted 4 in 4 words it would be Walk, Talk, Climb, Jeep

Well I think LL was extremely uninteresting and felt very non essential. I disliked the boring hub and bad pacing. I fail to see the tighter experience everyone sees. Chloe and Villain suck too.
Uc4 on the other hand, I've replayed last year and I thought it was very engaging story and gameplay wise. I don't understand the climbing complaints too. It's great in-between of shooting and feels satysfing to do. I am not a huge fan of Elena though and her I WAS RIGHT WIFE ATTITUDE
