A local man is likely to go to prison for years after he says he accidentally downloaded child pornography onto his computer.

Matthew White, 22, said he was surfing for pornography two years ago on Limewire -- a fire sharing application that allows users to trade music, movies, games and pictures -- when he discovered that some of the files he had downloaded were images of children.

Matt claims he quickly erased the files.

"It didn't appeal to me," he said. "I was looking for women my age, so I just wanted to download 'College Girls Gone Wild' and accidentally downloaded underage pornography."

About a year later, FBI agents showed up at his family's home. The family agreed to let agents examine the computer, and at first, they couldn't find anything.

Investigators later were able to recover the deleted images from deep within the hard drive.

"I asked them, 'Where did you get that? I don't remember that.' I asked them, 'Could I access that if I wanted to?'" Matt said. "They said no."

Facing 20 years in prison for possessing child pornography, Matt is pleading guilty on the advice of his public defender in hopes of getting a three and a half year sentence. He will also serve 10 years probation and have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Matt's father says other parents need to be warned about the consequences of stumbling across illicit material.

"One day, you're going to get a knock on the door and have your child taken away for many years," he said.

Matt's court date has been moved to January 8th due to paperwork issues, according to reports.

The FBI could not comment on this specific case, but said if child pornography is ever downloaded accidentally, the user needs to call authorities immediately. They may confiscate your computer, but it's better than the alternative.

Internet searches reveal a large number of complaints from people who say they've accidentally downloaded child pornography through Limewire.

It's exactly one image (which he deleted immediately). Doesn't that confirm it was a honest mistake and the guy obviously isn't into child porn? Why not search for the thousands of real nasty people with gigabytes of that stuff on their pc, or worse, the ones who make that stuff.



Edit: this could've happened to any of us. Everyone has to learn how the web works, and everyone has been a naive noob at one point who didn't know which are the right networks/sites/... to search for pron (it doesn't even have to be a porn search to end up with vile stuff).

Exactly. You didn't even have to search for porn to get illegal garbage. This is ultimately a waste of time and resources, as the people caught on P2P filesharing are likely not funding the development of child pornography nor are they likely to be producing it. Go after the people who are and stop with this ridiculousness.

This reminds me of what happened to me when we had just gotten a internet connection. I was 15 and had just started to look for porn and downloaded one of the many videos with all kinds of words in them. Substitute limewire with direct connect, the cp with scat porn and you get the picture.

I don't remember limewire too well, but didn't you download just one file at a time? Something tells me this wasn't an isloated incident. He wanted to see GIrls Gone Wild, girls around his age or in College... what if the girls in the videos were actually 17 or 16 and the Age of Consent in his state is 18, it would still be underage porn and he'd still get in trouble.

I remember when I was in my early teens and our comp was just THERE, connected to the web without any Kaspersky or anything and me and my sister used it to down load music on Kazam or some shit.

One day well looking for a game on the comp I saw a strange file. Opened it and it was FULL of lil nude girls. And there weren't even "sad", it seemed like some pics a pedo dad would take. There were in the back yard of some suburb playing with a waterholes which at some point transitioned to the guys (his face was never in frame) dick being . . . with the lil girls.

I thought "WTF is this shit!?!?! 0_o". Then I thought of who could be watching this sense it was only me, my sister and mother living in the house. I deleted all of it and never spoke a word of it. Comp at some point got too full of viruses to do anything and we trashed it.

Years later (in college comp gen-ed class) I learn't that people could host pedo stuff on other people's comps to keep their tracks clean and that thats why you should have protection like I do now (Kaspersky!).
