I guess I don't really know if the lore captured the imagination of the masses and would have made a difference. I would come back for any game where I was hooked on the story and a new chapter or episode was released.

I am pretty sure I lost track of what happened in the story of Destiny when the Game of Thrones guy said "That wizard came from the moon." Being moderately intelligent and not able to parse that statement just made me give up and take in the scenery. I still played an sequel and some raids, and got really into Gambit for a month.
