MARIO + RABBIDS: Kingdom Battle |OT| XCOM on mushrooms

Finally got my copy after a week of shipment delay.
Is the game supposed to be washed out color/blurry? From screenshots, I was expecting super vibrant deep color.
Oh and on handheld.

Wow. Doing the world 2 challenges after beating world 3 made them stupidly easy. Won't be doing that again.
I did the same thing. Finished the third world yesterday and returned to the world 2 challenges. I can finish them pretty mindlessly whereas they were very difficult at first. Will do the world 3 challenges before moving to world 4 next to avoid doing the same mistake.

Hopefully this drops in price a little by the time I get a Switch. Playing XCom on the Vita right now and the thought of a colourful version with Mario et al is very appealing.

Someone asked me to make some wallpaper out of loading screens so I might as well share them here.

I've got green and blue each in 3840x2160, 2560x1600, 2560x1440, 1920x1200, and 1920x1080.

It's 'blurry' due to the extensive use of DOF, but other than that, if your saw colorful screenthosts in this thread, but the game looks washed-out on your TV, you need to calibrate your TV colors/get a TV with a batter panel.

ps: still waiting for my amazon.de copy : /

I thought the exact same thing when I played (also in handheld). That all the colours were muted. I'm not sure whether it actually changed with later levels or I just got used to the palette but it's something I don't notice any more (currently halfway through world 2). It was definitely the first thing I noticed relative to the screenshots though, and distracted me from the game for the first couple of hours.

Yeah, it doesn't look very good in handheld mode.

Cool, thanks a lot! just want to make sure there's no special update or settings to toggle. I'm just used to the sharp and deep color of MK8.

Ya they're good up through world 1 maybe a bit of 2?, so ya you lost your chance. They trivialize the early game so you didn't miss much.
Actually, the DLC weapons are still good for any characters you don't yet have, since they scale to be on par with the strongest weapons currently available. So when you get Yoshi, for example, his pixel/steampunk weapons will be on par with the strongest stuff then available.

If you're use to overly saturated colors either from your TV or phone screen, the Switch screen might disappoint you. Generally, my experience from Zelda, to MK8D, to Splatoon, and now to M+R, is that the screen definitely looks a tad muted. My eyes usually adjust after a few minutes, but coming off the big screen can be a bit jarring at first.

I didn't notice any difference in handheld mode actually, I'm going to double check.

Might be one of the reason, since I'm currently playing Yakuza 0, colorful vibrant city.
But I love the switch screen, it looks very sharp for every game I've played. Mario + Rabbids is the first blurry game that made me felt like I'm looking at my Wii U gamepad, maybe not that bad. MK8D looks saturated and sharp while Zelda is washed out to begin with.

Rabbid Mario can straight up solo enemy groups with just a minor amount of support. Throw Itchy feet + M Power on him and he'll kill 1 cluster of 3 just by running around and the next with magnet dance + hammer. I haven't messed around with rabbid luigi much but, just looking at his skill set, not sure how could have near the burst his rabbid bro does.

World 1 looks overly washed out on both TV and Switch too me, but from then on I didn't notice anything bad. World 2 looked quite fine.

This game is an absolute joy to play, I'm having a blast. My only criticism is the slightly budget looking speech boxes - and that is a tiny nitpick. The art style is fantastic, the humour is on point, the music is classic Kirkhope (so much so it reminds me of Banjo pretty consistently).

Most of all, the gameplay is fun and surprisingly challenging (for me, anyway). The Ubisoft team should be proud of this, they really nailed it.

Dammit I think my save has a glitch. I'm in the post game, and World 4 has this fucking annoying Bowser Jr. laugh playing all the time. I switched the game to mute because it is still here after restarting the game.

Edit: OK its gone now after I did the secret chapter. I think it was a sound glitch where he could be heard throughout the level.

Can confirm I got the same glitch. There definitely is a bit of lack of polish in this game - occasional random crashes & pauses

I'm sure a patch will come out sometime this month addressing some of them

Arms and Splatoon looked fine to me. I've just been playing this on the TV after not liking how it looked on the Switch. Thinking about it again, I think there were, like, jagged edges on the characters reminiscent of what you'd see on a DS.

I didn't notice anything with World 1, aside from when they would show something in the distance and it'd be very blurry. It's a great looking world!

Per my username, I have to gripe a bit... Yoshi got jobbed in this game. :P

Kinda disappointed you only have Yoshi for half a world out of four. The game is fine length-wise but you really should have the whole party by halfway through, or a bit later.

Yoshi is also arguably the weakest character, boo. The pop guns vary wildly in damage, the only primary weapon type to do so. Rocket is alright but Grenade outclasses it most of the time. Freeze/Ink isn't bad, but I prefer Luigi's Ink/Bounce. The good news is Rabbid Yoshi is much more viable despite the popgun - gets Grenade, can get most dashes in the game with the most movement in the game, can get a barrier that can completely negate all damage - TWICE, and gets Stone (and I think his other one is Push).

I ended up using Rabbid Peach after a hiatus to start mega healing, to maintain those perfects. Sentries are pretty good too, which she enjoys. But there's really no doubt Rabbid Mario/Luigi are top-tier as already explained. Rabbid Luigi postgame gets fully guaranteed crits - lol

I mainly play on the TV but I think it also looks great on the Switch screen. From the tech reviews I've read, the Switch screen gets good marks in general, including deep black levels, but the colors are indeed a bit "cooler." Which is fine, but it'll be an adjustment if you're accustomed to warmer tones on your TV.

The glass half-full view would be that the game continually adds characters up to the end, keeping things interesting.

Should be noted, you can use any character when replaying missions for high scores, so technically you can go back and use Yoshi in every mission in the game, if you wanted.

I'm having this issue too, also I don't think my challenges are spawning but it may be because I didn't finish world 3 challenges :(

Don't underestimate rabbid luigi. Lil guys a beast in his own right. Vamp damage is an invaluable skill.

The World 3 boss was wonderful. Definitely the easiest one so far (I got Perfect on my first try), but the goofy, fun spectacle and environmental tricks more than made up for it.

Now I'm getting thumped by the 'Defeat 9 Enemies' battle in 4-3 (I think?) where like a million of the huge 510 HP thumper guys spawn every round. I think I'm going to go back to World 2 and clear up some Challenges until I can afford some new weapons.

No, it just takes a really long trek into 4 before you get to the first challenge.

Bowser Jr. laughing is just a thing that will happen to everyone on a repeat visit. All enemies are already spawned in everywhere in each world before you get to the mission, and because he's already sitting there waiting for you in the secret chapter, he's just there giggling to himself constantly. There's no range set on his audio, so everyone hears it everywhere.

I had a weird glitch where I was playing the game in docked mode, paused during the mid-fight cutscene during World 3's boss, undocked my Switch and then had my controls go all screwy. The Pro Controller I'd been using only seemed to be registering inputs intermittently, and I couldn't get the JoyCons to work at all. It was fine when I went into the Home menu, ut in the game everything was screwed up.

I was really worried, thinking I'd have to restart the bossfight, but I put my Switch to sleep then woke it back up and everything was fine.

Insane difficulty spike at world 4 midboss. Haven't done any of the challenges. If anyone has any tips it would be much appreciated.

Wow, sounds like this could be something more widespread then. Hopefully they patch it soon, but otherwise finish 4-S ASAP for your own sanity.

Also World 4 challenges don't start until halfway through the world, so hopefully you're OK there!

Man, that second toad escort is fucked.

3-4 of those crystal slab carriers at the end of the level does about 130 damage, I got destroyed near the end stretch. :(

Pfft R. Luigi runs circles around every character in the game. You think R. Mario is a champ cause he takes out a cluster with little support? R. Luigi can do that with NO support, plus he can tank better than all characters in 90% of the situations AND he's secretly the best healer in the game.

I've become such a R. Luigi fanboy in this game, lol.

Me too. He's so great. Nearly unkillable and can kite enemies for days.

But I use both M Mario and M Luigi

Guide to get perfect on it:

Mario, Luigi, Rabbid Peach. Best weapons available at the time.

Mario skills: completely fill technique, max out HP, the rest in movement including pipe
Luigi skills: mostly fill technique (Itchy Feet probably not necessary), max out HP, the rest in movement including pipe
Rabbid Peach skills: fill heal technique, max out HP, the rest in movement including pipe, in retrospect maybe should've put some in Shield

Turn 1

At the start, before doing anything, Mario use M-Power, Luigi use Steely Stare, Rabbid Peach use Shield
Rabbid Peach uses Sentry to attack Bowser Jr.'s Sentry, destroying it but hers stays alive for some reason (bug?)
Rabbid Peach and Mario move through the pipe to the right side of the map
Mario shoots Bowser Jr. -> Luigi's Steely Stare goes off 3 times shooting Jr. as he runs toward him -> Jr. gets in Rabbid Peach's Sentry range which goes off, drawing his aggro back to her -> Jr. runs toward her, maybe hitting her, maybe not quite able to get there
If you got a number of good crits, the defending Valkyrie will have died from all the damage and Jr. will be at about 900 HP left

Turn 2

Jr. will smash Mario and/or Rabbid Peach who will be able to take the hit
Rabbid Peach uses Heal on herself and Mario
Mario uses Hero Sight and goes back through the pipe to the starting area
Mario shoots at Jr. -> Jr. runs toward him, triggering Hero Sight twice as Mario keeps shooting him
Luigi finishes off Jr. with a Sentry probably because it's higher damage
If that's not quite enough you still have a shot from Rabbid Peach left

Cheers mate, let's give this a go

Full disclosure, I had restarted battles to get perfect on them throughout the game, and went back and explored every area, finishing most challenges and finding more orb chests.

So my strategy may require a certain amount of extra orbs you may or may not have by that point in the game. If you didn't do any backtracking it could be a difference of 100+.

Alright, I still think R Mario is better but I actually didn't understand what R Luigi did- I thought vamp dmg was just a % of your baseline dash dmg; I didn't realize it also boosted the dmg of his dash.

I also didn't realize vamp was a status ailment and that other characters could leech off the afflicted foe. I assumed Luigi was just getting a portion of his dmg (his baseline dmg even, not his buffed vamp dash dmg)

So not only does that hit a lot harder, but it also heals both r luigi and the group more than I realized. That is something.

If memory serves, if you time it right, you can have Toad within one turn's length from the end when they spawn....then, use another character to shoot one of them, drawing him away from the exit...then Toad can slip by on his turn.

oh I have more Toad escort coming in world 3? joy...

Trying to decide if I should pick this or Destiny 2 up. I love Mario and Xcom but Rabbids just really annoy me, which is what's keeping me hesitant.

Quick question regarding Rabbid Luigi... everyone keeps raving about him so thought I'd try him (I use Luigi instead at the mo).

How hoes his 'heal' work? Do I have to get the vamp upgrade (when he dashes through people they get vamped) and then he steals some of their health.... that's great - but how do the other characters get healed from that?

Thanks :)

Copy finally arrived. Onto mayhem and destruction!

The Rabbid impersonators are absolutely top notch, just presented pretty much perfectly with hilarious bits in the cutscenes and superb animation work. They manage to outshine the real Nintendo characters in every scene they're in.

Just so well fucking done, I'm actually kinda floored.

Vamp is basically a status effect put on enemies like any other, so other characters also benefit from the lifesteal when they attack an enemy that Rabbid Luigi attacked (and proc'd on) first.

I beleive when enemies have vamp status, and anyone attacks them, they get health back.

If I understand the mechanics correctly.

As soon as I realized this, everything clicked with Rabbid Luigi. I don't see myself ever kicking him off the team; he's a self-healing menace.

This game is still shocking to me. Rabbids. Mario. Strategy. I'm already hoping for a sequel.

OOOOOH, that's how the Vamp weapons work? Oh man, I have to try that out. I knew they drained health for the user, but I didn't know it worked for any enemy who attacked the afflicted enemy. That's awesome; I'm going to have to change my whole strategy :P
