Mass Effect 3 PC Thread: Fixing Bioware's broke-ass console port, now with holstering

Bioware doesn't think PC gamers need/want/deserve 360 pad support, decent AA, or FOV that suits our huge, high-resolution egos. And the normal ME3 thread moves far too rapidly for all of us PC gamers to get the info we need.

So ITT we get shit done.

Our very own Lime has hacked in a holstering mode into Mass Effect 3!!

Okay, for the lazy ones. I have uploaded my Coalesced file.: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43028447/Coalesced.bin

It includes the above mentioned "Holstering" solution, "Chemiali's" casual appearances, armour unlocks, new hair styles under shoulder appearances, plus the following commands:

Code:
Home = Combat mode (re-loading the game)
End = Explorer mode (re-loading the game)
Right-mouse = FOV 90 when exiting aiming
Numpad 9 = Flycam toggle with ctrl + WASD movement in cutscenes/dialogue
Numpad 8 = FOV 30
Numpad 7 = FOV 110
Numpad 6 = PlayersOnly (time stop)
Numpad 5 = Slomo1 (normal time lapse)
Numpad 4 = Slomo 0.5 (half time lapse)
Numpad 3 = FOV 70
Numpad 2 = FOV 0 (normal FOV)
Numpad 1 = show scaleform (disable HUD)

ANTIALIASING GUIDES

Note about Antialiasing before we begin: Disable in-game Antialiasing before using SGSSAA or Supersampling AA.

Nvidia Inspector SGSSAA Compatibility Bit

EDIT: Found a new bit! Allows SUPERSAMPLING AA! May also give better SGSSAA performance.

0x000010C1 (Not as good SGSSAA quality as 00C1 bit, but allows OGSSAA like 2x2, 3x3 etc.)

But best of all, it allows supersampling AA to work! I tested it with 3x3 SSAA and it worked beautifully!

Fuck yes.

0x000000C1 (Best SGSSAA Image Quality, highest performance hit)

Here's how to set up Nv Inspector for SGSSAA. (Thanks DennisK4 for making the demonstration pic)
Don't forget to refer to my SGSSAA guide for questions/setting LOD bias properly: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=33974105&postcount=83

360 CONTROLLER SUPPORT GUIDE

Xpadder Profile for 360 controller support
EDIT: After using Xpadder, Go into the game options menu, go to Mouse, then turn off Mouse Dampening! Then set sensitivity to 30-35%! This makes a HUGE difference in responsiveness.
Download Xpadder. Use this profile:

http://www.2shared.com/file/ImzKw1Fv/ME3-Xpadder-3Dizzy.html

This will allow your 360 controller to emulate mouse/keyboard and simulate playing on a console. Includes rumble support.

FOV fix

UPDATE: NEW, definitive FOV fix!

Go here: https://www.widescreenfixer.org/

Download the latest version (r398). Open it up, select ME3. Click the little settings button to the right of the menu where you select ME3. Set your FOV. Also go to settings. Set up a hotkey to activate the fix.

Start the game. At the OPENING LOGOS (the Bioware logo), hit your hotkey to activate the fix. That's it!

Here's the list of what the FOV fix provides:

Final version of the FIX IS NOW OUT
Features included:
- Proper scaling of menus
- Centered HUD
- Workbench fully functional
- Main Menu correctly scaled and working
- Adjustable FOV for Single Player - if you change the fov while ingame, reload the savegame.
- Disabled FOV for MultiPlayer to avoid BAN
- FOV is adaptive. No need to toggle. Cinematics are working properly.
- Recommended value for fov 85-90 - You can increase up to 120.
- SUPPORTS ONLY ORIGIN VERSION!!! IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER EXE it will NOT work. Don't bother reporting here, nor asking me to support hcrachked EXES
Not Fixed:
- Character Scaling in Menus.
- Probably it will not work with Eyefinity. Needs to be seen.
ACTIVATE THE FIX DURING INTRO CINEMATIC, NOT SOONER, DO NOT RUSH WITH THE ACTIVATION!!!
I really enjoyed fixing this game. Now is time to enjoy the game in GLORIOUS Surround. I hope you will like it
See pics bellow:
Best Regards,
Helifax

Here's the original thread on the FOV fix: http://widescreengamingforum.com/comment/242894

Here is the quote for how to use it:

Files attached, goes in *\Origin\Mass Effect 3\BIOGame\CookedPCConsole
NOTE: This can mess up ingame cutscenes (too zoomed out, so you'll see more than you should, like people sitting behind desks with no chairs) as the game was built around the assumption you're using a FOV of 70, so unless somebody manages to fix that you'll just have to switch between 70 and whatever you're using which is pretty easy to do, no biggie.
As with the demo you can add toggle keys for FOV in Coalesced.bin. Using this handy tool I added in the hotkeys for those who don't want to do it themselves.
UPDATES:
- Replaced FOV 70 with FOV 0 which simply stops overriding the FOV and goes back to 70. This can help during cut scenes (some still had the occasional weird glitch, this should fix that)
- Added a few modded "shared aim" versions of the Coalesced.bin (Fov 75 - Fov 110 in increments of 5) which allow proper zoom in when aiming and then changes the FOV back to a desired amount automatically (thanks to Maxwell_Adams for the info)
Check the code box for what numpad button does what FOV

Standard (No zoom in on aim strictly sticks to your chosen fov. Useful for those who get motion sickness, try shared aim also to see which you prefer)

WidescreenFixer developer helifax is also adding support for ME3 in Widescreen fixer, which will be the preferred way to do FOV fix once released. Watch this thread for more details.

Want Vsync + Triple Buffering?
Download D3D Overrider: http://www.mediafire.com/?ia3wiao4yparrpy

Install, browse to ME3 game exe. Set Application Detection to Medium, Force Triple Buffering. Mass Effect 3 already has Vsync forced on. All done!

If you want to disable Mass Effect 3's built in Vsync and use D3DOverrider's Vsync + Triple Buffering, add this to Gamersettings.ini

Code:
ForceFullVsync=False
UseVsync=False

BP101's ME3 Ini Tweaks

Disclaimer: These may or may not do jack shit, depending on if Bioware disabled the options. I haven't noticed any problems with them though and they worked in ME1/2!

Go to My Documents/Bioware/Mass Effect 3/BIOgame/Config and open up Gamersettings.ini.

Add these under [System Settings]

Code:
EnableHighPolyChars=True
SkeletalMeshLODBias=-1
ParticleLODBias=-1
bSmoothFrameRate=False
MinSmoothedFrameRate=22
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=60
MinShadowResolution=64

ShadowFilterRadius=5
ShadowFilterQualityBias=2
SizeOfPermanentObjectPool=19600000
FilmGrain=False
MaxTextureSize=4096
Trilinear=True
EnableLightEnvSHLights=True

At the bottom of the file, add this:

Code:
[TextureStreaming]
PoolSize=900 ;adjust to 100-200 MB less than what your VRAM is... I have mine set at 1536 because I have 2.5 GB of VRAM and I'm sure the game doesn't even utilize that much VRAM

This should force max quality texturing, lighting, shadows, turn off lame-ass framerate smoothing, enable more cache for VRAM, etc.

FIXING/EDITING MASS EFFECT 3 SAVES GUIDE (Come back to me, Wrex! Miranda, let me smang it! edition)

For those of you who want to edit your save game and change choices (like whether Wrex is alive or dead... I edited mine to make sure he's alive), here you go.

http://svn.gib.me/builds/masseffect3/

Go there, download the latest version. "But we've already seen this," you reply. Quiet, you sniveling nerd, and watch.

After that, open up the savegame (With the editor) that you want to edit. Go to Raw. Then expand Plot. Go to Plot again (below "ME1 plot." Expand it. Click on Bool Variables, then click "..." next to it. Great, a bunch of numbers popped up. What do they mean? Well, use the list below, set to true/false as it says, and you'll get the desired effect! Enjoy!

Code:
set PlotIDSet to true, PlotIDClear to false

Do you get on screen button problems with that Xpadder solution?

Nope. That would have to be implemented by cracking open the game and replacing the prompts. Bioware was too lazy to add in the button prompts from the console versions.

Wouldn't the earlier games sometimes glitch out and display the console UI? Like, the assets are in there but they didn't bother to add in the actual controller support. Thank god they managed to finish all of the retailer-exclusive DLC though!

why are there only AA fixes only for NVIDIA in these posts? How come no AA tips for ATI users?

Haven't had any problems with it. Frame rate is super smooth, game isn't buggy and I haven't noticed any intrusive aliasing :S

Thanks for this, especially the controller support. Why that couldn't be in by default is utterly beyond me, what a fucking lazy company.

I have heard that the earlier games did have the prompts still included. And yeah, they just didn't have time to work on 360 pad support 'cause all dat DLC.

Because I don't have an AMD GPU right now and so I can't write a cohesive guide on enabling supersampling AA for ME3 on AMD GPU's. I will ask Liquidmetal14 to take pics of what to set in RadeonPro. Sorry.

If anyone wants to send me an AMD GPU, I'll write more guides for AMD AA support. :eek:

Does this stuff work the same for ME2?

The SGSSAA will. I think the xpadder profile might as well? I never played ME2 on PC, but I believe there are already FOV fixes etc for it. Bioware changed certain things in ME3 so new solutions were necessary.

I have a PS3 controller and I use Motionjoy. IS there any help for me :(.

Check this out, I think this will help you out. http://www.motioninjoy.com/blog/xbox-360-controller-emulator

Great thread idea.

I'm operating on a very limited technical knowledge, so does anybody know if something like replacing holster animations during combat is doable and something we might see a modder put out there?

Only problem I have is some random occasional framerate loss. Feels like a memory leak. At least Crossfire sort of works. :/

Try enabling triple buffering + vsync using D3D Overrider. If you use RadeonPro, try setting flip queue size to 1 as well.

Also, turn off Crossfire. The game really only needs 1 GPU.

Great thread idea.

Maaaybe. I could see a modder doing that. If it'll happen? Who knows. The assets are probably all encrypted too...

It is definitely annoying that we have to run around with the gun drawn during missions, though. And it's because of the consoles... they couldn't put it back in for PC.

Probably not. I don't think anyone had access to the animation rigs in ME2. I don't think Bioware changed any of that.

Game already looks good with the art style but thanks a lot for that AA guide. Makes the game look way better.

I hope this is an okay place to ask this, I've played ME1&2 on my 360, but i know you can move that save over to PC now that I have a comp that canrun it, and run it better than a 360: Should I buy this on PC or 360?

Edit: wow that was a mess of a post.

Yes? I mean, you will run it at a higher resolution, better framerate and if you can import your saves, the better!

Can't I just force AA with nvidia control panel? Or does that not override the game's default AA? I haven't noticed any jaggies and I have it set to 16x AA in nvidia control panel...but maybe it's the placebo effect or something.

Here the difference between Normal and the SGSSAA Settings from the Thread.

Is it me or does the SGSSAA seem blurry? And I tried running inspector just to see if I could see the difference... I don't think it's overriding my applications settings regardless of the fact that I have tweaked the profile to match the pic in the OP exactly. When I turn AA off in the in-game options, its jaggy as hell despite the fact that I hit "apply changes" on Inspector. Any ideas?

Using Pinnacle Profiler for controller support but the profile isn't all that great. Tried using Xpadder but for some damn reason it didn't want to work. Is there some magic step I'm missing to have it work besides loading a profile, leaving it open and then starting the game?

Wouldn't you just use the profile specific to ME3 in nvidiaInspector. Also what's the performance impact of super sampling on your frame rate? Also you might have to set AA comparability for ME3.

mhhh if i turn off AA ingame + Settings from this thread i get less blurry
First: Normal with Ingame AA
Second: SGSSAA and still Normal AA on ingame
Third: SGSSAA but AA turn off ingame

I had the exact same problem. It wasn't doing anything. Changing Antialiasing compatibility to 0x080100C5 (Mass Effect, Mass Effect II) fixed it though. It definitely stuck, because I tested turning the in game AA off and on and there was no longer a change. That and the fact it was having an obvious effect on my frame rate. It went from a solid 60 to about 40.

I'm rolling with 2x [2x Multisampling] & 2x Sparse Grid Supersampling now. It looks good and is back to rock solid 60 fps.

Here's a shot of my Nvidia Inspector.

I have no problems with the PC version. It's gorgeous, controls perfectly and loads everything almost instantly.

Am I doing it wrong?

Yeah. I'd throw my vote behind it being good too. I'm just a tinkerer and was curious if I could get a little more out of it. But I honestly don't have any massive complaints.

I guess people can understand people being annoyed about lack of controller support. If they're wanting to play on a sofa. But the series has never had it, so it shouldn't be a massive surprise.

EDIT: <snip> can't be bothered going into this, I'm just about to go to bed.

Regarding MSAA, any confirmation that forcing it works fine for AMD users? I'd assume it does, the first two Mass Effect games were like that. Though it doesn't take much juice to play with SSAA.

I don't actually own the game yet, but does anyone know if this works for ME3? Keep in mind that you need to edit the file with Notepad++ or the game will crash on launch.

The ridiculously dark shadows in ME2, and the demo of 3, drive me insane. Could be helpful to have in the OP if it works correctly.

adding DepthofField=False to gamersettings.ini (under documents\bioware\config) seems like it works the same way it did in ME2. kind of changes the colors a lot though

I added some other stuff to it from my me2 ini such as shadowfilterqualitybias and a few others but I can't really tell if they make any difference

So honestly, does the x padder control work well as well as it would with native controller support? I've had mixed results with this type of solution, even though I haven't tried that much since EVERY game released since I started gaming on pc has had it.

I've only tried with Chaos Theory, where that analog movement is flawless using a Pinnacle profile. Then with Double Agent it doesn't feel right. It just seems that mouse control is fundamentally different from aiming with an analog, and isn't the left stick just wasd mapped?

I hate to be negative, but part of me wants to skip the game or wait for a big sale because of that "dev realities" bullshit.

I wish xpadder worked better for this. The camera/aim is always a bit too lag responsed to work well enough for me. Why Bioware couldn't just add 360 pad support is beyond me.

anyone with an AMD/ATI card find the best form of AA yet? I know for ME2 it was pretty picky and it took me a while to find the best looking option.

Everyone with a ATI card should have RadeonPro installed.

Simply select the game executable, and you can enable a myriad of features with a few clicks. It also gives you a fully customizable FPS counter and a dedicated screenshot button.

I have the game running maxed with 4x MSAA supersampled, at solid 60FPS, and it looks gorgeous.

excuse my noob question but why do people still use this for something that can easily be done with the normal CCC?

I don't have many problems with the port. Textures are much improved from ME2, although still not very good. Performance is good.

My biggest complaints are where it suffers from being a console port- poor animations, no holsters, etc.

And then it seems incongruous that there is no pad support because it shows its console heritage so readily. I'm a mouse and keyboard guy, but it just seems kind of bullshit.

Radeon Pro sounds pretty cool, though.

This is the first Mass Effect I've played on the PC. The only one I've played previously was Mass Effect 2 on 360.

Download it over Origin, 360 controller in hand. Doesn't respond? Maybe it's in the options? Nope. Google it and what the fuck is this shit?

Apparently it's 1995 again and nobody uses a gamepad.

Fucking Bioware. First SWTOR is a piece of shit now this.
