I have ME 1 and 2 .. I haven't been able to get into either despite loving SciFi, and RPGs. I think I put more time in crappy FFXIII than either of those. Disappointing, but I don't know what I can't like them at all. I love my Skyrim and Fallouts. WHY

Tucah

you speak so well
I may not be happy with some of the stuff done with the game (multiplayer mode, the fuckload of preorder bonuses, day 1 DLC) but it's easily the best $80 (CE) I've spent on a game in a long time. Well done Bioware.

I don't know what's more impressive, those day 1 numbers or how they managed to squander a series so spectacularly. Guess I can't complain as I'm part of the problem.

What's wrong with the multiplayer? It's fantastic.

Does anyone else find the combat in ME3 to be horrible clunky?

In ME1 I thought It was brilliant. Their selling point was that you had to be smart and make use of all your skills to take down enemies or bosses. That big geth machine on the planet that you find Liara reminded be of RPG fights of years past.

ME2 was by no means a bad game, It was still engaging, and capture a much more gears style gameplay. It was kinda cool to see the skill set expanded, with new skills for each class.

ME3 is just really disappointing to me. The combat angle is horrible. That entire opening scene you are stuck in a combat position. Skills are even more spammable from 2. The only reason I still play these games Is because I'm invested in the story and I love the universe that was build in the first game. Regardless this game really shows EA's fingers in Bioware. Instead of desecrating existing IP's EA should create new IP's to fill a niche in the industry. Not just shift around existing franchises.

Well deserved. So glad they're being rewarded for finally really building a trilogy where every part feeds into the next. Really the first of its kind, and they deserve the Ferrarris for it.

I just...can't get behind this. Probably one of the most universally agreed points by people playing ME3, especially in the OT thread, is that the combat is far better than ME1, and ME2. ME1 easily had the worst of the series. I can't believe you're calling ME3's combat "clunky" and ME1's "brilliant".

The combat flows so nicely this time around. Everything is fluid, intuitive, the powers feel great, the guns feel great, melee feels great.

I wish I could have played this imaginary Mass Effect 1 that people have built up in their minds. Sounds like a hell of a game. Shame it doesn't exist. :~(

Mass Effect 1 had the worst combat in the series. It was just horrible.

It's kind of an American English slang phrase that might not make sense elsewhere.

By the same token, back ten years ago you would see people in California refer to something as "sick" or "wicked" when they actually thought it was really cool.

And when Michael Jackson said he was bad, it meant he was pretty cool.

It exists. You unfortunately don't understand the concept of differing opinion.

The game is fucking great. They did a fantastic job with the 360 version, which I only purchased because of my saves. Wanted to buy it on the PC, but they overhauled the graphics engine to such a degree it is mindblowing what they did on that machine with 512 megs of RAM.

'Excellent combat' doesn't correspond with the opinion people had of the game at the time, though. ME1 had a ton of issues, and it's dumb to pretend like it didn't. What happened instead was that instead of Bioware fixing issues for ME2, they simply removed/streamlined the problematic subsystems (and ME3 reversed some of that), and put a ton more focus on making the game feel more like an actual shooter.

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--USA Today proclaims it is “the first true blockbuster game of the year.” Game Informer says BioWare delivers “one of the most intricately crafted stories in the history of the medium.” Already having earned over 30 perfect scores and an average review score of 95*, enthusiasm for Mass Effect™ 3, the latest title from BioWare, a Label of Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA), is at an all-time high. Over 3.5 million units of the award-winning game have already shipped worldwide in its first week of release, making Mass Effect 3 the first pop culture event and the biggest entertainment launch of 2012.

“whether you possess a storied history with the series or come in with a clean slate, Mass Effect 3 expertly entangles you in its universe and inspires you to care about its future.”

“We have been truly humbled by the amazing response from fans and critics for Mass Effect 3,” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder of BioWare and General Manager of EA’s BioWare Label. “The game is a gripping, engaging experience where the decisions and choices you make will truly stay with you for the months and years ahead. We are all incredibly proud of Casey Hudson and the teams in Edmonton and Montreal for delivering the best game BioWare has ever made.”

The game has been lauded for delivering both the satisfying experience longtime fans have been yearning for while also being the best entry point to the series for players new to the franchise. Mass Effect 3 thrusts players into an all-out galactic war to save mankind from an ancient alien race known only as the Reapers. With a team of elite soldiers at their side, each player decides how they will take Earth back, from the weapons and abilities they utilize to the relationships they forge or break. Mass Effect 3 also features the Galaxy at War** system, where players will have the option to fight the galactic war on multiple fronts. The system includes the franchise debut of co-operative multiplayer, as well as the latest iOS exclusive app, the cover-based, third-person shooter, Mass Effect Infiltrator. Progress made in each of these components will directly link back to the player’s main campaign, helping Commander Shepard rally the forces of the galaxy to eliminate the Reaper threat once and for all.

The Mass Effect series is one of the most highly decorated series in the history of games, having earned over 200 international awards to date. Mass Effect 3 is available now on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and PC. If ever there was an example of looking back through rose-colored glasses, it's Mass Effect 1. Game was absolutely derided at launch by a lot of RPG fans, and it's only been bolstered over time because people were and still are upset that the series headed in a more obvious shooter direction.

That doesn't really change what the first game was, sadly, which was a shitty mix of ill-fitting gameplay mechanics with a Saturday Morning Cartoon villain, some fun characters and cool music. Love Mass Effect 1 for its "promise," sure, but its execution left much to be desired.

91% at both GameRankings and MetaCritic, and beloved by many. Deal with it.

And better than ME2.

Nah, hell no. I will genuinely say Mass Effect 1 was excellent, by my standards at least. The ONLY things I fault it for are the horrible lag/framerate drops in certain areas of the game (which led to the clunkiness) and unwieldy inventory system. Everything else about it was spot on.

A large number of ME fans will cite it as their favorite Mass Effect. The gameplay in ME2 exceeded ME1, but everything else in ME1 exceeded ME2.

.... what?

ME1 combat brings back some bad memories...

Fighting the krogans and the asaris is just awful ....

There's no AI at all. Enemies disregard anything that you do and don't take cover... They just run right next to you and spam you with infinite bullets and then you just die....

Chairman Yang

if he talks about books, you better damn well listen
I'm disgusted with Bioware nowadays, but ME3 is pretty excellent so far, maybe even better than ME2. Certainly better than the mediocre ME1. I'm happy the game's selling well so far.
