Considering this:

I seriously doubt MS will go forward with plans for a console that is so heavily tied to cloud.
not clicking on that link

You know I am wondering if Steam/etc would crack down on cdkeys and similar sites... which at best gets it's keys using currency arbitage (and you have to use VPN to redeem the keys)

Some interesting Phil emails regarding Yakuza Like a Dragon in here and about SEGA too.

He loves the rumours that they would launch their console in Japan with Sega's branding?

Is he stupid or what? Does he not realise that that's an indictment of the dire situation their brand finds itself in within Japan?

Out of curiosity do you think there will be any repercussions from this? Someone from MS getting the axe? Or are they just going to say oops! and move on?
You'd think so but I guess it depends on how valuable the person is. We had a guy fuck his wife with his laptop camera on during a meeting and he kept his job.

I don't see the cringe in that comment. I think he loves the association Xbox has with SEGA. He probably sees that as a big step in their Japanese relationships (which were dire at the time).

I think that his view is more centred on the american shills view of the situation. More like Xbox will do better this time on Japan and will use Sega as a Trojan horse to do it! Sony and nintendo, be ready!
So I can see why someone would be happy of rumors like this one. But not a the CEO level, of course. You are right that they have a bad reputation there but until relatively recently Apple was in the same case ( their Iphone were not selling a lot in Japan) and it changed fast. So there is a way to fix it. And if they could do it the easy way, by using Sega nostalgia, they would have done so.

If you're in charge of a brand that's existed for 20+ years you should be offended by the notion that you should use another companies corpse in order to make your brand a success in a particular country/region. He has no fire in his belly.

Just my 2 cents.

The fire is buy, buy, buy. Curation has screwed the pooch the past decade or more.

So much fucking stuff in here, it's going to take weeks to go through all of them...
get help from Heisenberg007 Heisenberg007 we need a sequel to his thread 😜
I did find some other interesting stuff in the documents, like:
  • Phil being okay with Fallout 76 on PS Now
  • Saying things in the leaked email like [paraphrasing] "we can use this as a foundation to put try to convince Nintendo and PS to allow Game Pass on their platforms."
  • Being pissy about Ori releasing on Switch [it felt like this was the main reason why they cut off their relation with Moon Studios, not the "poor working conditions" excuse]
And some other interesting tidbits ...

But I'm being too lazy to make an official/sourced post or thread about it :messenger_beaming:

Reading through the thread, it’s surprising how many people are on-board with the concept of an all-digital future.

You do understand that there is no existing digital equivalent to owning a physical copy right? Are you really happy with having no way to trade in your software licence? Having no way to sell your software licence? Having no way to gift your software licence? Being locked into a single marketplace for purchases? Retailers have an incentive to lower prices as a means of competition. Are you really telling me you wanna be stuck with that $70 bug ridden flop game with no way to recoup any of your costs?

How about the broken promises of digital? Weren’t we told that digital would be cheaper as there were no associated manufacturing or distribution costs? What about the promises surrounding game preservation? Or the inclusion of DRM free offline experiences? These things would become completely unfeasible and impossible to attain if solely relying on bottom-line focused platform holders.

For many savvy consumers that have navigated the physical game space for decades, that have enjoyed a means to play the latest games at the cheapest cost, this is a sobering prospect indeed. We are talking about doubling or even tripling the overall cost of this hobby. An all digital future would effectively ‘Blockbuster’ the remaining physical game stores. Are people really ok with that?

Personally, with the end of the collector, the end of physical game stores and the loss of basic ownership rights, it would amount to nothing short of a catastrophe. A betrayal of the highest order, perpetrated by a Microsoft that for years led the way in backwards compatibility. Hell, you can still insert original Xbox game discs into the latest generation of devices and play. Why are people in such a hurry to give that up?

If he had no fire in his belly, explain today's Japanese support. That's a major uphill battle for Xbox.

Also fuck Phil Spencer "buying nintendo a career move" lol. How about building up a desirable product and brand from the ground up and creating/mantaining your own IP portfolio? Nah, that's too hard.
Do we think phils knows if he buys Nintendo that will go to shit as well?

Or is he going to make the Nintendo guys run xbox, only way I can see it working. Theoretically speaking of course.

Xbox still misses out on plenty of Japanese games and they have next to nothing from Japan to themselves.

If you're looking for Japanese games it's still not the console to own (if you only have to pick one), so not much has changed in that regard in the decade he's been in charge.

Yeah, it's all Nintendo now. Even Sony has given up in a lot of ways in the Japanese market.

Remember when MS funded games made in Japan? Pepperidge farm remembers.

Yep, that's what Japanese support actually looks like but these guys have amnesia and spend a ton of time crying about how "other platforms" make life difficult for Microsoft.

Well a slight correction, in this case we are supposed to believe the "other platform" is only Nintendo despite the fact that he's spent time here crying/begging for Japanese games that are on Sony platforms but not on Xbox.

It's unfortunate, but clearly a daily dose of delusion helps them get through it.

This shit wild and probably more devastating than I initially thought. how do they recover form their whole generation plan laid out infront of thier competitors? How do they they make deals and communicate with third party partners when they know this can just happen? Also now that we know the full metrics of gamepass, and more importantly how they value those games that might hurt how gamepass gets games on thier service know that devs have seen a look at the internal evaluation process.

It's nice to know Phil Spencer has a solid understanding of the industry.
He does but he is basically telling a long story to say

7zprm8.jpg

and doesn't really have any answers on how that (edit: that, I mean Gamepass) is a good thing for the big publishers. In fact all he can do is explain how they fucked themselves, which I'm not sure is what they want to hear.

Dunno obviously they would never want this info come to light but in reading the emails you guys are posting I'm not seeing anything nefarious or evil. The buying Nintendo stuff is whatever pipe dream but the rest of this just seems like normal business speak and information. From what I read in the above email snippets they foresee an evolution of the distribution market to digital distribution where AAA publishers are slow to react and MS values them and wants to help them be successful. They value and appreciate Segas partnership etc etc. It's crazy having access to all of this stuff though, that's for sure. People jumping up and down screaming AH-HA but why?

Been all digital for donkeys on the PC and since the start of last gen on all 3 consoles. No regrets. Library at my finger tips, can download and game in 10 mins or less. Not got heaps of plastic lying about.

Not for everyone but suits me just fine.

I hope Dishonored 3 happens, and the Oblivion, Fallout 3 remasters, but these plans are from before the MS takeover, so who knows!.

Guess this is why there are so many soulslike games coming to GP lately lol.

>Wildcards: Negative crunch culture press will make them not want to push teams unreasonably

"It will be bad PR to crunch in order to launch the PC version so sadly this might get in our way of a GP deal" or am I reading this wrong?
