Massive new ads on mobile GAF

So, it seems like the mobile version of GAF has recently started playing host to some really huge, intrusive adverts.

It was initially flagged up by Gavin Stevens Gavin Stevens in the error reporting & feedback sticky a few days ago, but as that thread has effectively been radio silent on the matter since then, I think the subject merits its own discussion to get some visibility on the issue.

Here are some screencaps of the ads in question. As you can see, they take up over half of the usable screen space on any given page. They also have a scroll view embedded in them, which prevents the browser from touch scrolling unless you make sure to start your drag outside of the ad.

Welcome to Blakely.com, featuring NeoGAF

They also appear between posts, which at first glance makes it look like the end of a thread.

This is probably the least offensive of the lot since pac-man CE was a good game and it's tucked away down the bottom of the page, but it's still not great.

As it stands I can't tell whether this is an intentional change on the part of the site, or whether it's a case of advertisers taking advantage of poor regulation (similar to those nasty android pop-up ads) in order to dominate page space with their content. Plus, because ads and their providers vary region-by-region it's possible that this is only affecting a small subset of gaffers rather than being a widespread issue.

Are any of you lot experiencing the same thing? It would be good to get some transparency from the moderation team on this as well.

Those ads didn't load for me yesterday for some reason. They were just big empty spaces. I was wondering what those were.

Yup, worst it’s ever been. I didn’t mind them at the bottom of the screen but taking up the whole of my phone screen at the top? And smack bang in the middle of threads? Really?

Why not just go the whole hog and have an ad after every post..

So how's that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. vanilla playthrough going? >.>
I finished up Shadow of Chernobyl, got the true / canon ending that continues into Call of Pripyat. Good game, I liked it. Very different from the pure sandbox mod stuff too, as you said.

Maybe I should bump bati's thread again and post some proper thoughts. I was planning to do that after finishing my playthrough of CoP but ended up burning out and simultaneously getting sucked into Monster Hunter World's PC release...

Yup, I still get the huge adds for bit coin and the like. I also get a huge add just below the first post on a page, effective meaning i have two phone length screens worth of nothing before I get to the content.

I will chime in and add my discontent with regards to these monstrous ads. If the admins could find another ad solution it would be appreciated.

Yeah if this continues I'm out of this place. I still got a sour taste in my mouth from those pop up ads on mobile that kept popping up non stop. I'm afraid thwt evilore is going all in on the cash grab now that people are coming back

And you would be wrong. We disabled ads entirely to improve user experience when we found out that they were hijacking our members. This new ad problem is only temporary and is a result of switching ad companies since the previous one was not living up to our expectations.

I'd rather have massive ads than the popup ads that force redirects. Glad to see those are gone.

It's a temporary deployment of Adsense responsive ad tags while we switch ad representation. Wasn't supposed to show two big rectangles on mobile, but it's just for a few days. We disabled mobile ads entirely for several weeks in order to provide respite from the malicious redirect issues affecting some users while I sorted out new ad reps, so we have a massive revenue deficit vs server costs right now and the present ad layout helps slightly. It's not permanent. We should be up and running on the new ad tags by 8/20 or thereabouts, and we'll return to a reasonable set of ad placements. Thanks for your patience with the transition.

Also, keep in mind we incur a lot of server overhead keeping one of the largest forum databases out there intact, as well as a team of great devs here developing new features and updates for everyone, so when the normal ad layout returns, consider pitching in for a GAF Gold sub whenever we go live with that. Or just whitelisting if you adblock. You'll help keep the lights on and the new features rolling in. GAF has always been very minimally monetized and stayed indie for you all.

I think the top ad being large is very obstructing to the user experience. Ideally that gets reverted to the small banner size it was before.

However, and others may disagree with me on this, the other middle and bottom large ads on mobile don't bother me as much. Also after scrolling through a couple of 50 comment pages I think you could maybe get away with placing another large between-comment ad somewhere closer to the bottom half.

Well that's my 2 cents as I get this is a balancing act.

Ha oh dear. At least I was in the ballpark.

Anxiously awaiting my fashionable bitcoin pac-man tag.

Cheers EviLore, that's a reasonable explanation and knowing that things are moving behind the scenes makes having that patience much easier.

Looking forward to seeing things like GAF gold materialize too- being able to support the site directly and make ads a little less necessary will be a great addition.

Beard's public relations isn't his strong suit but he does a lot behind the scenes for the sake of the site and has a heart of gold besides. :messenger_halo:
I may be in the minority on this but I rather appreciate the frankness. It comes across as a lot more down-to-earth and real than a flowery PR statement would.

Bit of a bump but I’ve been getting intrusive ads blocking the Neogaf UI bar
(On my iPhone 7s)

Edit: well I guess I can “close” it but it resets on every new page so it’s still mildly annoying
