Media Create (Feb 14-20) PSP IS...

PSP is down again?!?!?

This is like the 5th week in a row and they still havent sold a million systems.

What the hell is going on?

Well, I think next week's sales will be more post worthy. It seems DS has a good chance of hitting <20k sales, that is unless Another Code, holds that off, so unlikely though.

I don't think Another Code is going to do much to boost hardware sales, but March is a good month for software for both PSP and DS, and it's traditionally a good month for sales anyway. In the short term though, both DS and PSP are plagued with launchitis.

And even i am moderately surprised
i'd put it down to a crappy week, but as jonny mentioned and as i mentioned earlier...
it's now fairly easy to get hold of a PSP. Shibuya had three stores with plenty of stock, my two local stores have PSPs (in Tokyo obviously - JP and co have said the units have been available everywhere else for a while)

(incidentally - there seems to be NO stand alone packs - all value)

Slow week.

PSP is still doing more than DS + GBA + GC combined.

<3 months later>

PSP: 3.000
DS: 984
GBASP: 236
GCN: 24

"The PSP is still doing more than DS + GBA + GC combined."

Personally I don't think the DS is going to get much lower, but I do think the PSP will do around this total on average.

The next set of dailies will really give off a nice indication of how PSP will do this week. I'm going to be interested in seeing the new release sales for today. Namco Museum will probably take the cake, and if another jump from Minna is seen (it could top Yoshi and Sawaru) that remains consistent, then I think that says good things.

I just noticed though, the SP is up by ~500 units.

BTW, before the insanity really kicks off. PSP is now available in shops, without too much looking around.

Well,

Sony certainly can't like the sound of that.

1) Available
2) Still isn't quite sniffing a million units

The standard PSP defense of "well, it's been constrained, so of course it hasn't sold as much as the DS", doesn't really hold up if it's readily available. That and units were down as well. Beyond software releases which can bump up the system a bit (although releases themselves are quite spotty for months), Sony had better pray for better sales.

Actually both of them need better sales. Both of them, as many have said, have a dearth of non-launch software. The DS has quite a few more "tentpole" software releases that are guaranteed to sell well based on Nintendo building a few handheld franchises that they can bank on to an extent.

I'm quite surprised at the "limp" reception post launch.

And even i am moderately surprised
i think what is most likely hurting the sales more is the total lack of any stand alone packs.

All new stocks seem to be the value pack, with no sign of the stand alone.

Whilst 19800 vs 15000 yen is obviously something to make potential fence sitters think, 26000 vs 15000 isn't. That's quite a big difference, and i'm wondering if that's a factor ?

Why? A launch usually has the hardcore buying the hardware. Now its the casuals doing the buying.

Quite frankly both have a few failings, the PSP has a battery life that isnt very tempting for casuals(I am sorry, who the fuck is the idiot that decided an addon battery was a good idea when they could have easily replaced the battery in the psp itself for a better one?). The DS well, it is plain crap. But what they both fail at is the fact that they dont fit into a pocket like a handheld should, which is why the GBA SP is even doing relatively well despite being horribly outdated.

Incedentally, Namco's expecting 150k sales from Namco Museum PSP. I don't know if they'll manage it, that's about double what the GBA version sold in Japan iirc. :/

Yeah, that's a nice month for both, especially for the DS, it's about time it really started getting its act n gear in terms of software, and it's not overloaded with Nintendo titles.

I saw the website for this that just launched, it actually looks a lot better than those first scans we saw, I don't mean graphically, but as a whole. Apparently it's another point and click mystery type game, but you're investigating a murder surrounding some kind of MMORPG? I'm just taking a guess from the opening movie/trailer on the site (and if that FMV was taken straight from the DS card, amazing), but it looks nice, doubt it will ever come here though.

Yep, it's really underperforming, worse than RE4 truthfully. DMC managed about 350k first week and DMC2 managed 300k. It's like Onimusha 3 all over again, DMC3 should end up around 300k total I think. Rockman.EXE and Monster Hunter seem like the only healthy IPs Capcom Japan has left. :(

When are people gonna finally start believing that the japanese market is really in bad shape???

Well I think the slow-growth nature of the console market is evidence enough of that.

To be honest, I thought the PSP would have more hardcore fans. There have only been 872,652 PSP's sold in Japan vs 1,823,638 DS'. I know that shortages hurt it during the shopping season and with the impact of the launch, but I was pretty confident that the buyers would wait and buy in force once the systems were available.

Essentially, I thought the launch period wasn't over yet as the initial demand hadn't been satisfied because of the shortages. Now we see that perhaps the launch is over and it had less of an impact than I would have thought.

I'm not worried, per se. Just very surprised. Certainly software releases will help, but the hardware really should be selling itself this early on and not need the software yet.

I barely touch my PSP nowadays...so boring.

I was going to make a thread about that exact topic. I was wondering, now that we're a couple of months past, how people were using their PSP's and DS's.

Does it sit on the desk as you play your PS2, Xbox, or Gamecube?

Only used when you're on a bus or other place you have to wait, or do you actually play a good amount at home?

Was it worth it to you? or are you biding your time until the software actually hits.
