The notes.
Sales of the top 100 titles totaled 2,074,647 units, 76.81% of last week's total. None of the new titles launched this week took spots in the top 100, and the market was thus completely centered on existing titles. DS titles in particular performed well, and eight of the top ten software titles were DS titles.

DS made impressive gains in the hardware market as well, and was so popular that a series of stores ran out of stock. This developed to the point that Nintendo made a formal apology for the DS shortages. Partially due to this, total DS sales fell significantly compared to the previous week to 355,904 units, or 56.29% of last week's result.

Sales results for the same week the previous year (Week 1, January) were 1,358,355 units for software and 388,465 units for hardware. The software market expanded compared to the previous year, and if there had not been shortages of DS results for hardware would certainly have risen year-on-year as well. It thus appears that this year has gotten off to a strong start.
They mean total HW sales.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Wow. KH2 was the saving grace for the PS2 this week. All the rest are Nintendo handhelds. ALL OF THE TOP 5 GAMES ARE NDS! Wow. There I said it Iwata, wow.

If you'd have told me a couple of months ago that Animal Crossing would cruise to 1.5 million, I would have slapped you silly. But it's great for the industry.

Next chart we'll see 2 more DS million sellers and 1 more the week after that then 1 more the week after that.

EDIT: Forgot to mention KH2 will also break a million next chart.

How did Superstar Saga sell in Japan? Is PiT doing better, worse, or about the same? Honestly PiT doesn't deserve those sells since it wasn't that good of a game .:(

What is with the Animal Crossing explosion? I mean, did the N64 or GC version come close? It isn't like Animal Crossing DS is a brand new game. I wonder what a true sequel could do. Could Animal Crossing end up being the best selling DS game in Japan?

I believe it is on pace to do much better. DS success is having a trickle down effect on all games.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
jesus - as if having this many million sellers so early in the life of the machine wasn't bonkers enough, BT2 looks like it's going to cruise over 1 million in FOUR WEEKS!

:O

If they can appeal to these gamers in the home (and there is no reason they can't) Nintendo could be the daddy.

I'm pretty sure ACDS has already sold more than all the other versions combined.

Wow.

Anyone know when the last time the Top 10 Japanese chart featured 9 handheld titles? Or 9 Nintendo handheld titles at that?

I haven't really ever followed them closely enough to know myself. I'm assuming this is irregular.

So PiT is a big improvement, in terms of how fast it's selling. It will probably wind up around 400,000.

Two words:
It's online.

I'm really curious about the hardware numbers.

QFT

Anyone have Animal Crossing's GC numbers for Japan? The US has sold more than a million units, correct?

It has really emerged as a big time Nintendo franchise now. I bet Iwata wants it ready for the Revolution launch at this rate.

Thanks. I was just dissapointed by PiT. It was a solid game, but I didn't laugh a whole lot.

talk about ds domination...

kaizoku

I'm not as deluded as I make myself out to be
Considering the userbase the DS has, for DS sales to be outselling many GBA games from the GBA's prime is really impressive. Not to mention outselling PS2 games.

This really is a phenomenon. GBA saw nothing like this am I right?
