The DSi is $40 more expensive right?
This prompted me to look up the exchange rate with the Yen. Remember how we've always said that the DS has never gotten a price cut in Japan and has now gotten two price increases? That "$40 more expensive" difference now brings it to the price of a DSLite in Japanese Yen.

New titles had a really shitty weekend. And this is without a title that was supposed to be out that Saturday and could have sold 2m in 2 days.

Why is it that in the territory where the Wii has the greatest percentage lead over the competition that it's getting the lowest support from third-parties? Western developers are doing more for the Wii in putting games on it than Japanese developers are, and the Wii hasn't even gone > than the PS3+360 combined there, yet. Look at the top third-party games on consoles this generation.

1. PS3 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot no change in sales; cost? lol
2. WII Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors initially shortage ridden port of a game that plugs directly into your TV
3. WII Taiko Drum Master Wii 3rd best Taiko on consoles, better than any console Taiko in the last four years
4. PS3 Yakuza 3 halts the series growth; maybe only a 15% drop from Yakuza 2
5. PS3 Resident Evil 5 no change in sales
6. PS3 World Soccer Winning Eleven 12: PES 2009 down 65%
7. PS3 Shin Sangoku Musou 5 down 60%
8. PS3 Gundam Musou needed a PS2 port to offset underperformance; Wii port? lol
9. PS3 Winning Eleven 11: PES 2008 down 70%
10. PS3 Devil May Cry 4 +10% after 3 was down 35%

Western focus! Then explain Gundam Musou, Yakuza 3, and Shin Sangoku Musou 5.
Developer ego! Is this a business or an art class?

This data is not secret. How can no publisher seem to see what's going on? If handhelds are "the future," why are these console games getting made at all? Obviously they still want console games to be made. Do they not care to give them the best chance to sell?

Millions invested! And that's a reason to continue to spend millions on the 2nd and 3rd place consoles?

It does not make sense.

:/ Oh, well. :|

I can give you the answer to why Yakuza isn't on the Wii

Nagoshi :

- Before, you wouldn't make software for hardware which wouldn't sell. Things are now different. It's now a matter of fighting so the resources dedicated to the HD consoles wouldn't decrease.
- Making titles that actively justify the existence of the high-end consoles is a personal mission.

I can't really fault him. Mikami did something similar with the GameCube last generation. Of course in the end, Mikami was let go, and Capcom did whatever they pleased with RE4.

There has to be a balance of both. If everyone is after profitability and profitability only, the only games we'd ever are stuff like Petz. While the suits are ultimately running the business, devs still have their personal aspirations and we should be thankful for that.

And now we've got a Mikami-less RE5 :(

Well one fundamental difference is probably that Japanese HD development budgets aren't really particularly different from SD ones - which is not the case in the west(to put it mildly).
And that shows quite obviously in the games too - most Jpn PS360 stuff still plays and looks very last generation(compared to Western games anyway) - whether that actually affects sales is another question.

Petz doesn't really sell on the Wii, just FYI.

Good point. The Western developers have more of an incentive to cut budgets. The Japanese developers could get more sales on the Wii, but they wouldn't necessarily be spending significantly less (mega-blockbuster budget games like MGS4/FFXII excluded).

And here you know because the "suits" are running the business and not developers (unless they themselves have some business acumen) : developers helplessly support something believing it will win, or at least live well, while the businessmen see that no amount of support can save a dying trend in the long run. If only businessmen and developers listened more to each other and threw away their pride for a change.

Honestly, from an industry standpoint, the last posts in this thread are kinda depressing, because they ring so true to me.

My take on it:

1. MGS4 was probably under contract to go PS3 (timed) exclusive
2. I don't think Yakuza 3 would've sold better on the Wii, but that's my opinion
3. RE5 - No change in sales as you said, that's good
4. Pretty sure PES and Musou have been going down in popularity year after year, the series have stagnated
5. DMC4 sells in line with other DMC

Wii is getting 2 and maybe 3 of the top 4 3rd party games in Japan, not that any of it matters, if we're talking strictly business and what makes the most sense in Japan, then MH3 shouldn't be on the Wii and DQX shouldn't be on the Wii either, they should go to PSP and/or DS, as should KH3 and the FFXIII.

PSP might be reasonable from H/W userbase point of view, but from S/W sales point of view, it is not the best choice. Wii is a better choice than PSP from S/W sales # point of view.

Really hard to say that, since we have no idea what a big RPG, or a Kingdom Hearts game could do.

Dissidia? Not exactly an RPG per se, but it's something on that scale, and certainly sold no small amount.

What? Have you not seen the numbers for MHP, MHP2 and MHP2G?

And like others have said we have no idea how a mainline DQ or KH game would sell on PSP, my guess it would sell better than if it was on any other system in Japan except maybe the DS.

DQ always go to the one with the greatest install base in Japan. KH has only been on console or GBA. The test of KH will come after the release of KH: Birth by Sleep

Did anyone actually compare the figures given from WKC at GDC I guess it was (on that slide, wasn't it ~350k?), to numbers from this if they were available? Or did people just take that slide as the right number? It'll be interesting how RPGs once in abundance for the PS3 there sell compared to the fallout of the others have been experiencing. If the jRPG is really handheld owned.

Can you post a link to the slide or a post talking about the slide? By Famitsu, WKC was up to 325K three weeks ago and selling less than 2K per week. If it was showing 350K, it was probably a shipped total.
